HOUSTON COUNTY FOOTBALL 2007
'O7 games to watch
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Soorts Writer
Today: Westfield vs. John
Milledge, Marvin Arrington Sta
dium
It could be argued that it was in this
game last year, held in Milledgeville, that
the Westfield Hornet season came to an
early end with the loss of one of the top
GISA players, Austin Madruga, to a knee
injury. Will the Hornets come out of this
year’s meeting at home with all hands still
healthy?
Saturday: Warner Robins vs.
Camden County, Georgia Dome
There’s still nothing like watching footr
ball in a massive 80,000-seat enclosed sta
dium. Warner Robins High made its first
ever summer visit to the Dome last year,
and it must have felt like being in the friend
ly confines of McConnell-Talbert Stadium
as the Demons waltzed over Parkview
High, yes, that Parkview High, 30-3. The
return trip wasn’t so good, however, when
Peachtree Ridge outlasted Warner Robins
in the AAAAA semifinals 13 _ 7.
Camden County High, however, will have
lots of revenge on its mind when the two
middle to-south Georgia powers collide
in Atlanta for this Kell Classic showdown.

The Wildcats grew quite used to winning
at home, but the Demons last year spoiled
their home part in the state second round
by controlling the action in Kingsland and
marching on to Norcross for another up
set.
Sepl. 7: Warner Robins vs.
Northside, McConnell-Talbert
Stadium
Last year, this game took place at the ear
liest part of a season ever. This year, some
thing else will be quite different.
See, Warner Robins could always go into
the state’s No. 1 rivalry contest knowing,
‘Hey, at least we’ve won a state champi
onship.’ Not anymore. The Eagles took
care of that back in December by beating
Marist right there in the Mac to take its
first gridiron football title ever.
Can anyone else fit into the Mac? We’ll
find out on this date. Northside still has all
of the offensive weapons from quarterback
Marques Ivory to running back Tijuan
Green to receiver Nick Bass. Warner Rob
ins players can hop on the back of gigantic
tackle Robbie Bailey and go just about any
where they want.
Sept. 21: Houston County vs.

the road and heads down the interstate to
Houston County. The Bears, with all that
senior power, ruled that big Jungle up in
Lilburn last year, but there is no Offensive
Player of the Year Eric O’Neal anymore to
eat up yards and put points on the board.
Sept. 28: Perry vs. Henry County,
Herb St. John Stadium
The Panthers can smell a big year in foot
ball, but in order for that to happen Andy
Scott’s charges need a big charge in the
non-region portion of the schedule. There’s
Hawkinsville, Dougherty and Jackson to
hurdle first, and finally the Henry County
Warhawks. Henry County has a future
Atlantic Coast Conference performer as
Chris Jackson, wide receiver, has commit
ted to Georgia Tech.
Oct. 5: Houston County vs.
Lowndes, McConnell-Talbert Sta
dium
Ever catch that episode of The Twilight
Zone where no high school football team
from Valdosta made the state playoffs. Ac
tually, that was no fantasy; that was reality
in 2006. Even a defending state champion
like Lowndes wasn’t assured of anything,
but what seemed like a big assurance was
that Houston County High was going to
win road games against near impossible
odds. The Bears conquered the Vikings
down there, but what about up here?
Oct. 19: Perry vs. Peach County,
Anderson Field, Ft. Valley

What’s that? This is going to be Perry’s
year? Does anybody, really own a year, at
least until mid-December?
Anyone with a pulse and common sense
knows that in order to be champions, you
have to beat champions. Peach County is
still the team to beat in AAA even with the
departure of its head coach to the college
ranks. Is this, then, the best time to catch
the Trojans? All the Panthers can say is
they have as good a group of senior talent
as its ever had, what with Casey Hayward
at quarterback and Kanorris Davis at line
backer. But they also know that not only
can Peach win, but win big.
Nov. 2: Northside vs. Westside,
McConnell-Talbert Stadium
Is this the record for the most head-to
head coaching matchups in Georgia foot
ball history? Well, Conrad Nix vs. Robert
Davis would have to be somewhere near
the top. Will it be up to Davis and the Sem
inoles from Macon to keep the Eagles from
going into the region playoffs with another
spotless record?
Nov. 9: Warner Robins vs.
Lowndes, McConnell-Talbert Sta
dium
Let’s face it. In a region like 1-AAAAA,
this could be the game that keeps the losing
team home for the rest of 2007. Or maybe
both will be secured in its tournament slot
and the game will just be for momentum.
Or maybe both will already be out of it.
