“I don’t think it’s ever going to
be a situation where we’re ready to
go right now. I hope 15 weeks from
now we’re a lot better than we are
today.”
The face of the Perry defense
for 2007 is Davis, who has played
six different positions in the past
two years (even some offensive full
back as a sophomore) and earned a
scholarship offer from Purdue Uni
versity of the Big Ten Conference.
Scott said Davis has gone through
his own evolution in football with
all of the positions, but this year the
plan is to set Davis at linebacker
and give him the space to run and
make tackles.
“He’s always played with great ef
fort,” said Scott. “He’s always been
a poster child for pursuing the ball,
running and hitting. He’s learned
more about the game playing line
backer ... as a lineman you get so
used to just attacking people. Being
a linebacker he’s had to learn where
other people have to be as well as
himself. It’s helped him mature and
become a better football player.”
On the defensive line, there’s

There's nothing quite like walking outside and taking a deep breath of fresh,
clean air after a thunderstorm. Wouldn't you like to be able to step back inside
and enjoy that same fresh air all the time?
We would like to introduce you to Fresh Air by Eco Quest: By duplicating the
same processes nature uses to clean the air outside, Fresh Air by Eco Quest™
keeps indoor air fresh and clean-smelling day and night. Collectively known
as SynAirG™, these processes work together synergistically to eliminate smoke
and odors as well as kill bacteria, mold and mildew in unoccupied areas.

Tony Davis. Jecavesia Hayward
(Casey’s brother), Garrett Stokeling
and Jonathan Clowers add to the
nucleus of the front line. Opposite
of Davis as an inside linebacker is
sophomore Kaderius Felder, one
Scott said has the potential to rise
to Davis’ level. On the outside are
Brandon Smith and Tyler Rogers.
Lane, Tay Brown, Preston Mitchell
and Ephraim Wheeler make up the
secondary. Scott said there is some
youth here, but plenty of talent.
“We’ve had to do some things
in our pass coverage,” said Scott.
“Even though we led (Region 4-
AAA) in run defense last year,
we were dead last in pass defense.
We’ve had to come up with some
better pass coverage things in order
to help us there.
“Hopefully it will. We won’t
know until the season progresses.
We have to make sure we’re in the
right position, we line up correctly,
we pursue the ball with great angles
and make good open-field tackles.”
On the special teams side, Perry
went from practically non-existent
in the kicking game for the first half
to near perfect down the stretch.
“Lasseter is one of the best high
school punters in this area,” said
Scott. “Bill Freeman and Ray Guin
are both coming back. Bill has got
ten so much better as a kicker.

By no means does Perry have a
“cupcake” schedule. It’s one that
opens with a usual state-cham
pionship-waiting-to-happen in
Class A, that being Hawkinsville
High. Up next is Daugherty, who
is now coached by Charlie Flow
ers, the same coach who, while at
Shaw High, knocked Perry out of
the playoffs in Scott’s first season.
Daugherty also played for the AAA
championship in 2005-
Afterwards, it’s all 4-AAA teams
with two north sub-region cross
overs. Perry goes to Jackson to try
to avenge last year’s heartbreaking
loss at home. Flenry County comes
to town Sept. 28 with one of the
top-rated receivers in the state.
Oct. 19 would have to be the most
anticipated date as the Panthers go
to two-time defending state cham
pion Peach County. But Scott
won’t look to far ahead because he
feels the south sub-region is top to
bottom the stronger of the two in
4-AAA.
“West Laurens is going to be bet
ter and I think Central is going to
be good,” said Scott. “Northeast is
getting better, so we are going to
be in a dogfight each Friday night.
Southwest is going to be improved,
so we can’t take anybody for grant

All that awaits now is for the
Panthers to meet the mounting
expectations, and the strong early
schedule makes for a challenge.
