Northside’s Eddie Thomas stops a Ml Zion running back for no gain.

on 21 carries. Several of the
yards he gained were taken
away by the swarming tack
les of Eddie Thomas, Eric
Fields and Abry Jones among
others.
“I’m going to tell you, he’s
a good running back,” said
defensive coordinator
Kevin Kinsler of Ward. “I’m
a little bit disappointed in
our tackling. A couple of
times we had him hemmed
up and he got away. It’s a
credit to him. We had two or
three guys right there and
he slipped away. I thought
our guys did a pretty good
job most of the night slowing
him down.
“The guys up front were
doing their job. Linebackers
and a couple of secondary
guys made pretty good open
field tackles at times. We
have to do a better job of
tackling backs like that. He
was the best one we’ve seen,
but we are going to see a lot
more.”
With Northside trailing 7-
0, it was just a matter of
pounding the football on the
ground, and the game was
soon tied. Fullback Brandon
Jordan did all his running of
the game on three straight
totes to get 15 yards up to
the Zion 39. Starting quar
terback Joe Scott hit Nick
Bass in the flat, and Bass’
stiff-arm move gained him 17
yards to the 22.

to get to the 11. Jordan also
gave Green a block on the
toss sweep up to the 3. From
there Green had his first
touchdown at 7:48.
Devon Pike made all five
PAT kicks in the first half
and added two more in the
second.
Cooper’s go-ahead touch
down came at the end of a
10-play drive of 74 yards. It
had an 11-yard run for a first
down by Scott, starting in
place of the injured Ivory.
The first play of the second
quarter was another Green
touchdown run. This drive
for Northside started on the
Bulldog 18 as a punt was
popped up in the air and
only netted two yards. Green
scored from 11 yards out (21-
7).
Ward had just three car
ries in the first half, one of
which Thomas stopped for a
two-yard loss on a 3rd-and-l.
Khiry Jones, like Thomas a
senior tackle, had two stops
on the Mt. Zion three-and
out series prior to the short
punt.
The Bulldogs moved the
football better down 21-7 as
Ward picked up a pair of first
downs up to the Eagle 27. But
Fields chased down Ward for
another loss for 3rd-and-12.
On 4th-and-3, Ward tried the
delayed draw but was met by
Thomas in the backfield.
Scott did a little play faking
with Green taking a rest on
the bench. His play racked up
17 yards to the Zion 28. From
there, Bass took a handoff
while in motion, and fellow
receiver Tracey Lawrence
blocked up-field to clear the
way for a touchdown at 5:18
(28-7).
Green’s third touchdown
came at 46 seconds to go
until the half. He had four
carries - one for 38 yards
- on the drive from the Eagle
43 and scored from five out
(35-7).
Senior end Anthony Taylor
ended the half recovering a
Ward fumble. Of Green’s 196
yards, 155 came in the first
half.
Bass had two more touch
downs within three minutes
of each other in the third
period. The first was set up
by Green’s final run of the
night, which picked up 41
yards to the Bulldog 24. Scott
stood in an empty backfield
and fired the football to Bass
to make it 42-7.
Scott had four comple
tions in all in just six passing
attempts for 62 yards.
To go with his rushing and
receiving touchdowns, Bass
caught a punt on his 39-yard
line and made a nifty return
past several Bulldog defend
ers for a 61-yard score at 7:55
(49-7). Taylor and Thomas
set up the return by making
more stops on Ward at the
line of scrimmage.
Two more Eagles would
get into the scoring column
late in the quarter. The first
was Xavier Hawkins on a 30-
yard touchdown run with big
blocking help from Jordan
Dooley. Bibbins had a first
down catch of 11 yards into
Zion territory on that series.
Trent Johnson notched the
PAT kick here. Alan Davis
also ran a long ways to get
the final six points.
