Planting cover crops can prevent erosion, weeds

“off season,” usually the winter,
benefit the gardener and farmer.
Some of the benefits of growing
them, we said, were their ability
to build the soil’s organic matter
content by releasing nutrients
back into it, prevent erosion,
suppress weeds, and improve
the soil’s structure.

This week we will look at a few
more cover crops.
Field peas and oats planted
together combine the benefits
of a legume (peas) that fixes
nitrogen with a grain (oats) that
provides a lot of organic matter.
The peas tend to grow right up
the oat stalks. Plant this mixture
in late summer.
Sorghum-sudangrass, as the
name suggests, is a cross be
tween sorghum and sudangrass.
Growing 5 to 12 feet tall, this
hybrid produces large amounts
of organic matter. This frpst
tender plant can be kept under
control by mowing it down to
6 inches tall when it reaches 3
feet.

invasive, providing a quick
canopy to shade out weeds. It
matures in just 6 to 8 weeks,
and can be planted between
spring and fall garden plantings.
Its white flowers can be used
to attract beneficial insects and
serve well as a filler in flower
arrangements.
Crimson clover is a nitrogen
fixing legume and thus helps to
build rich soils. It also attracts
beneficials, is quite attrac
tive, and helps build good soil
structure. Clover can be mixed

I chose Houston because I was looking
for more of a challenge in my Nursing
Career. In my ten-year career I have
worked in several facilities, but I still
wanted something more challenging.
When I looked at what Houston offered,
I decided to see if “the void" would be
filled at this facility. The longer I worked
here, the more satisfied I become.
