The American Association of University Women recently distributed books at Northside
Elementary School as part of the Reading is Fundamental program. According to a
release from the organization, there are three distributions annually where students
select a new book. Funds to provide for this, according to the release, come from prof
its from the AAUW Used Book Sale held at the old Houston Mall. Pictured: Parents,
teachers and AAUW members enjoy the RIF opportunity.

Kroger store manager Daryl McKinney presents Mia Geiger, Director of Development
for The Westfield School with a check for SI,BOB for the 2006-2007 school year. The pre
sentation was made during halftime of a recent football game. Westfield’s parent vol
unteer organization, according to a release, uses the proceeds from the Kroger Earning
Plus Learning program to fund fine arts scholarships and other student scholarships.

Perry Middle students learn Internet safety

Perry Middle School and its FBLA club,
according to a release are in the spotlight
again. On Oct. 1, Pete Golden with the
Georgia Emergency Management Agency
visited Diana Phillips’ computer classes to
teach students about Internet safety and
cyber bullying. The kids, according to the
release, were very receptive and expressed
the idea that perhaps their parents and
other adults could benefit from the same
information.
“It was eye-opening to hear the students
talk about their MySpace, Facebook, etc.

had a MySpace, but their parents don’t
check to see what they are doing and say
ing on-line.”
Golden and Phillips added they were
happy to hear many students say (after the
training) that they were going to go home
and change their information so that they
would not have such personal information
available to everyone.
