Fop best gaming experience - you need 'horsepower'
Last week I wrote
about getting the
right kind of moni
tor so games can be seen as
realistic as possible. With
the introduction of 3D tech
nology and the ability to
get onto a network and play
against others, it gets pretty
intense for some people.
But having the biggest,
brightest monitor is only
half the story. What all gam
ers want and need is horse
power, i.e. a powerful video
card combined with a fast
computer.
To really appreciate the
current technology, let’s
step back. Anyone over 40
years old probably remem
bers the green monitor with
only text appearing on the
screen.
In fact there were exactly
256 characters that could
be produced and they
were called ASCII charac
ters, referring to a table
of alphabets, numbers and
some signs commonly used
in typing. These were the
Reunion inspires recollection of mama's skill at chores
My baby brother Tim vis
ited from New Mexico last
weekend, and as is the case
when any two or more of
us siblings get together, the
topic eventually gets around
to mama. We talk about
how quiet she was, and how
unquiet our father was.
Most of all, we talk about
how much work our mother
did throughout her long but
not-long-enough life.
In addition to taking care
of six or seven kids, she
cleaned house performed
other chores indoors and out,
and worked alongside daddy
and the older kids on the
farm. She was as adept at the
plow as the stove.
Anytime the topic turns
to the prodigious amount of
work our mother did, I am
reminded of the 1947 movie
The Farmer’s Daughter,
about a young woman from
a Swedish immigrant family
who becomes a housekeeper

only characters on the video
card.
It was simple to use and
cheap to make since there
were no colors. The main
problem back then was that
computer memory was very
expensive so companies
wanted to keep costs down
and use as little memory as
possible. As the resolutions
increased so did the need for
more memory.
It was a fairly small leap
from monochrome to color
for monitors. The grandad
dy of the video mode was
invented by IBM in the
1980 s and was called Video
Graphics Array or VGA. It

“What can you do,
Katrin?”
“At home, I do everything,”
Katrin replies. “Make six

offered 16 colors and a reso
lution of 640 X 480 pixels.
So it’s 1989 and we have
16 colors. But games are
coming out and there is a
lot of pressure to get more
and more from the video
monitor.
Again, as in the push for
better technology for better
montors, the gamers want
ed more power to play big
ger and better games. The
programmers could write
them but the hardware was
behind. The video card could
produce the colors but the
computer could not keep up
with the game. Characters
were blurry looking and it
took a second or two for a
character to get moving.
This time Intel answered
the desire for more video
bandwidth and created the
Accelerated Graphics Port.
It was a special slot on the
motherboard and the only
card you could put in it was
a video card.
They also engineered it so
it would talk directly to the
eggs, dill pickles, smoke ham
and bacon. I wait on tables,
40 hands at harvest time;
and I make glug (a fruited
alcoholic drink).”
“You do?”
“Ja, at Christmastime,
with a hot poker. You want
to know what I do outside?
Well, I plow with horse and
tractor, I hoe potatoes, shock
wheat, milk cows, bed horses,
butcher pigs, kill and dress
chickens, and I cut wood for
mill or stove.”
“You’ve got a job, Katrin.”
That listing of farm chores
sounds like just the first page
of our mother’s resume. She
was a Renaissance woman
who could kill, preserve and
cook anything; spend a day
in the field without com
plaining; treat injuries and
ailments large and small;
and still make sure we did
our homework correctly. She
just never got around to run
ning for Congress.

CPU and not have to wait in

going on in the computer.
Now let’s fast forward
from 1989 to today. The cur
rent technology now pro
duces 16 million colors and
the standard video slot on
the motherboard is the PCI

itself now has its own mem

In fact some video cards
run so fast that they come
with fans attached to them
so they do not overheat.
Although there are hun
dreds of companies that
produce video cards, there
are only two companies that
produce the vast majority
of graphics processors found
on video cards: NVIDIA and
ATI.
Your choice of a graphics
processor is your single most
important decision when
buying a video card. NVIDIA
and ATI are extremely com
petitive and come out with
new cards every year.
