THE THALIANS.
We iM'lieve tlint the excellence
of the entertainment at the op
era house last Friday night de
serves the most cordial recogni
tion in one of our heavy edito
rials.
It is keenly gratifying to
know that within the portals of
our own I'niversity there are
those who, by musical talent
and histrionic ability, can com
mand and retain for two and
one-half hours the rapt atten
tion of a crowded house. It is
equally joying to note that
there arts those in Athcmr sulli-
ciently appreciative to liruvo
the inclemency of a veritable
storm both to gain pleasure for
themselves and to give encour
agement to the participants in
the program, lie who did not
take delight in every number of
the first part is lit only for trea
son, stratagem and mean corn
corn liquor: he who was in
different to the ineffable charm
of Lend Me Five Shillings
would, perhaps, lind more to
his liking, "The White Slave”
or "The (lirl from Chili.”
Our abiding gratitude is ex
pressed and our fervent thanks
tendered to Misses Brodnax
and Lyndon for their kindness.
In lecturing on the Roman
Law, l>r. McPherson frequent

THE BOHEMIAN CLUB.
The soul-stirring strains and
sad but true words of Charlie
Andrews’ song put us in re
membrance of the pristine
splendor of our local Bohemia,
that happy time liefoiv the
ruthless tread of the invader
routed the pleasures of that
happy land. The glorious tem
ple of llcrod was builded up
on the ruins of the old one de
stroyed; Rome did not lay in
ashes after Nero's obligato to
the crackling of the flames: the
South, tho dismayed, was not
entirely crushed by the prome
nade of Sherman and his
friends. Why should the Bo
hemians lose their heart be
cause Mayor Smith’s desire for
DISTRIBUTION OF THE PLUNDER.
A pertinent question at thisi
time, when there are a few dol-!
lars in view, is, to what fund
will the proceeds of the Thalian
performance be directed? Every
connection of the Athletic Asso
ciation, doubtless, has a sug
gestion of distribution. To be
sure, Tiik Red and Brack has
such. For reasons which are
so palpable that to mention
them would insult intelligence,
we believe that the debt hang-
ing over tho official organ of the
Athletic Association should be
removed, in whole or in part,!
and that the residue should he
devoted to the interest of base-
hall.
As yet the baseball manage
ment lias not been enabled
to get toe-bold and the first
efforts have been worse than the
little hoy’s walking in muddy
weather. Without more en
couragement, not in the matter
of air-mocking words but in
very bard cash, our determi
nation to throw off profession
alism and maintain a stand
with home talent must lose its
stamina,.
The Thalian performance did
not have its customary stage
properties: flasks, sen-sen, and
hiccoughs.
THE PANDORA.
We are pleased to note the
ginger which characterizes the
promoters of the lft00 Pandora.
The start was late, but the suc
cess of the annual need not be
impaired by this initial imped
iment.
Let every fellow who can write
even tolerable lines enlist in the
movement and show that he
possesses what is truly college
spirit. This spirit is not evi
denced so much by fog-born ut
terances upon the baseball and
football field when our terns are
guilty of a piece of noticeable
work nor in enveloping yourself
and your friend in streamers of
red and black, but in the silent
and laborious devotion at your
table, and the plunging of tho
band into your purse. There is
no fellow in school who cannot
!declare himself in some way.

THE GEORGIAN.
It is not our purpose to eriti-
tho editorial staff of the (Vror-
<tiau. It is evident, however,
that there is some weakness in
the number of men who are ap
pointed upon the staff or there
| is a lamentable lack of contrib
utory support on the part of the
student body.
It is too much to ask of any
one man, that he grind out
enough readable matter each
' month to fill a pamphlet of tho
Georgian’k compass. Mr. Vail
has an impossible task. Dis
semble the fact as we may, it
yet remains patent to one in a
trot that the student body either
engages in undertakings be
yond its powers, or else grows
indifferent and withdraws its
support after tho novelty is
gone. Tin toys that do not at
tract after the paint is licked
off belong to childish days.

FIELD CAY.
It had begun to appear that
the Athletic Calendar had been
denied a field day as the solar
year was denied a twenty-ninth
of February.
The track team lias been in
unostentatious practice and no
proclamation from a distance
has been made, so that promi
nent notice is due the exercises
which occur next Monday af
ternoon.
The withdrawal from college
of the regularly elected track-
captain and the appointment of
his successor occasioned some
little inconvenience in the be
ginning of the work, but the
Iiarticipauts are now in form
and some exciting exciting
events are promised.
An enthusiastic crowd should
greet the team next Monday
afternoon.

STUDY.
Study should be perennial.
If, however, some have been
guilty of that "worst hus
bandry, the sowing the mind’s
goodly field with tares,” i
there is yet opportunity for
remedying industry before the
usual time for the laying by of
intellectual crops.
