After 15 weeks of reconstruction, the
Beechwood Chick-fll-A is reopening today and
offering its first 100 customers free Chick-fll-A
combo meals for a year.
The building, still located on Alps Road,
has upgraded facilities. The new features
include an indoor playground, additional seat
ing, an updated interior design and wireless
internet.
The Chick-fil-A also has a different drive
thru that will be more efficient and will allow
for better customer service, said Shane Todd.
Beechwood Chick-fil-A owner.
"With the building being almost 23 years
old, it needed an update,” Todd said.
Built in 1984, the building experienced var
ious names and owners.
Delites, owned by Herschel Walker, occu
pied the building first The facility was turned
into a Hardee's later. It became Chick-fll-A in
1992.
There were about 50 customers lined up in
front of the restaurant at 10 a m. Wednesday.
They continued to gather throughout the day.
Individuals 18 years or older can begin to
wait 24 hours before the opening to guarantee
their spot in the first 100.
The morning of the reopening, Chick-fil-A
will open its doors 30 minutes early to
announce the winners. The 100 customers will
receive 52 coupons for a free combo meal,
which is about $26,000 in free Chick-fil-A food
in total.
Car break-ins lead to
increased police patrol
By ALLEN KRONENBERGER

Throughout the 2006-2007
school year, 110 car break-ins
were reported to University
police.
Most of the items reported
stolen were CD players, iPods
and laptops, said Tim Smith,
a University police officer
Smith also said these
items are left in plain sight on
a regular basis, and “10 to 15
percent of cars with items
stolen are left unlocked.”
Cars located in the rail
road lot off of Thomas Street
were more likely to be broken
into. University police report
ed 20 break-ins in that area
last year.
According to Smith, cars
in this lot are susceptible to
break-ins. He said this is
because a significant number
of people not affiliated with
the University walk through
the lot due to its location.

campus traffic, such as foot
ball game days, are not a

major time for car break-ins.
During the 2006 home foot
ball games, 14 car break-ins
were reported. Nine of these
thefts were reported during
the games against the
University of Tennessee and
Georgia Tech.
Smith said the risks asso
ciated with more people on
campus were canceled out by
the additional police officers
on patrol. This combination
makes the campus too
crowded for burglars to break
into a car without being
noticed.
Instead, Smith said,
Sunday and Monday nights
are likely times for a break-in,
because there are fewer peo
ple to spot the burglars.
Smith said that in the last
four months there have only
been five or six burglars
arrested, but campus police
have been participating in
parking lot stakeouts in
places like the railroad lot.
University police have also
increased foot and bicycle
patrol in those areas.

What happens when the one place
you long to return to no longer exists?
The Town & Gown Players deal with
that exact issue in their latest produc
tion. "The Trip to Bountiful."
Premiering this Friday at the Athens
Community Theatre, the cast features
some of the most skilled actors and
actresses in the area, including Gay
McCommons, an instructor and advis
er at the University's English
Department.
"The way Gay inhabits the part, you
literally watch her age 20 years from
the moment she steps on stage,” said
Marie Bruce, the play’s director
McCommons plays the lead role of
Carrie Watts, an elderly woman
trapped in her home by her controlling
daughter-in-law and compliant son
She rebels against their authority in
order to return to her idyllic home
town, Bountiful *
Unfortunately, there is no Bountiful
to return to. The place has become a
ghost town.
The play follows Carrie on her jour
ney to this realization and explores the
intricate relationships she has with the
people in her life, both dead and living.
“The characters and their situations
are so complex and so subtle that

“It’s a story about relationships. It
is a woman remembering her husband,

For McCommons to delve into the
character of Carrie, she also looked to
the past for inspiration
“I grew up in the semi-rural South
and was familiar with women of
Carrie’s background,” McCommons
said.
“I had a lot to draw on emotionally.”
Bruce believes the poignancy of the
script and the humanity of the main
character will draw the audience into
the play.
"The language is deceptively simple,
everyday people doing everyday things.
But the more you look at it, the more
you realize that every word contributes
to the story,” Bruce said

Stage bands both
happy to play,
write new music
► From Page 1
This album is the first one released by
The Whigs under their label ATO Records.
Gispert said his definition of success is
having the band together and being able
play their music.
“As long as we can keep doing our thing
that is success,” said Gispert.
Another Athens band, The Winter
Sounds, will also play AthFest’s main stage
earlier in the evening.
The Winter Sounds plan to release their
album, “Porcelain Empire,” on June 26,
which is a mixture of re-recorded songs off
the band’s older EP and five new songs.
Patrick Keenan, bassist and vocalist for
The Winter Sounds, said the new songs are
a result of ideas compiled while touring,
and the new songs contain lots of layers
and melodies.
“We built up ideas touring and fixed
everything into these songs," said Keenan.
Keenan said he would be happy to just
make enough money so that the band
could continue to write and play music.
