Senior back’s
playing status
questionable
for Saturday
Senior backup fullback Jason Johnson
did not dress out for the Georgia football
team’s Wednesday practice in shorts and
helmets and is questionable for Saturday’s
opener against Oklahoma State, head
coach Mark Richt said.
Johnson experienced a “burner,” also
often referred to as a “stinger,” in practice
Tuesday, Richt said.
“We ran an inside drill (Tuesday) and
he kind of went right up the gut, and ran
into Rennie (Curran) and (Dannell)
Ellerbe,” Richt said.
“At the time, it didn’t look like anything
out of the ordinary but it kind of jacked
him back a little bit ... I would say he’s
probably questionable right now.”
Richt said it wasn’t yet clear which of
two redshirt freshman fullbacks, Fred
Munzenmaier or Shaun Chapas, would
assume the No. 2 spot if Johnson is unable
to go on Saturday.
“Munzenmaier and Chapas have both
done a good job. I think either one would
be very capable,” Richt said.
He said that the decision will be up to
running backs coach Tony Ball.
Johnson would join safety Antavious
Coates, who tore his ACL Monday, as the
only Bulldogs out of commission against
the Cowboys, Richt said.
“We’ve had a relatively healthy camp,
too. Rolling into this thing, maybe JJ
won’t go. Coates, of course won’t go. But
most of the guys that we thought would
be ready to go are ready to go.”

Defensive end prepared
for tough season opener
By MARSHALL DUNCAN
The Red & Black
There’s an old adage in
sports: you don’t want to
be the guy that follows
“the guy,” or that elite
player people never forget,
but you want to be the
next guy.
Assuming David Pollack
was “the guy,” then red
shirt sophomore Roderick
Battle is in prime position
to take over the defensive
end role this season.
But with the success
Quentin Moses and
Charles Johnson had last
season, Battle still has
some big shoes to fill.
Luckily for him, pres
sure doesn’t seem to be a
problem.
“I don’t think there’s a
lot of pressure. We all have
our own goals but first and
foremost we just want to
win games,” Battle said.
Unlike recent seasons,
Georgia plays a tough
opponent immediately in
week one.
Because of this, the
younger players have to
work that much harder to
be ready for the start of
the season.
“I like the situation
where you have to get
ready and there is no room
to relax,” Battle said.

PERFECT ROOMMATE??
What better way to find them
than in the RED & BLACK
roommates Section. Bringing
roommates together for
Oklahoma State and their
agile quarterback Bobby
Reid, the defense has been
practicing against the
scout team, where mobile
freshman Logan Gray has
been acting as Reid behind

“We’ve got Logan Gray
running around juking
people,” Battle said.
“He scrambled a few
times. I told him after
wards he did a pretty good
job.”
Overall, Battle and the
rest of the players are just
ready to play the game
after going up against
teammates since spring.
“We are just looking for
ward to getting to play
and getting to hit some
one besides ourselves and
compete against some

Atlanta native, said.
While Battle is

“Atlanta would be nice
