Tracing its roots all the
way back to 1967, the
men’s rugby team is the
oldest club team on cam
pus, with a strong tradi
tion of victory and suc
cess.
Take, for example, the
dramatic win over Georgia
Tech last season.
“(Georgia Tech) was
trying to ram the ball
through us to score and
win the game,” junior
Ryan Cooke said.
“We stopped them cold
for the full eight minutes.”
Current president and
player Michael Thompson
expects the team to con
tinue their success in the
upcoming season, hoping
to win the South region
and go to nationals.
The team also has a
long-standing tradition of
brotherhood.
“(Rugby) is a good way
to get that smaller group
of people that makes the
college experience what it
is supposed to be,” Cooke
said.
The opposing teams
often go out to celebrate
together after the games.
The team sent veteran
Archie Japaridze and
Thompson to South Africa
over the summer to play
rugby.

Junior outside hitter

junior setter Mara Martin

In addition to setting

Isner ‘next big thing,’ faces stars

Asa tour rookie, 6-foot-9
John Isner has transformed
from the big man on cam
pus into the next big thing
in the professional tennis
circuit.
After helping lead the
Georgia men’s tennis team
to an undefeated season
and a national champion
ship last year, Isner decid
ed to make the jump to
professional tennis.
Like most newcomers to
the next level of any sport,
Isner experienced some
growing pains, losing in the
first round of his first tour
nament as a professional.
But in his very next
tournament, Isner knocked
off the second-, eighth- and
ninth-seeded players, leav
ing only top-seeded Andy
Roddick in the finals.
Isner only received a
wild card to play in the
event after Fernando
Gonzalez withdrew from a
sore back.
“After each match I won,
I’m getting more and more
confidence, kind of like a
snowball effect,” Isner
said.
“I’m just looking at my
next opponent, I’m like,
‘Why can’t I beat him?’
That’s what led to my suc
cess here. I feel like I’m just
going to wake up any sec
ond.”
Questions, guesses abound for 2007 season
The 2007 college foot
ball season kicks off
tonight, and this
season looks to be every
bit as exciting as last year.
Will two conference foes
fight for a BCS title berth ,
as Michigan and Ohio
State did last year? Will
anybody come within 20
points of USC? Here’s a
list of five things to watch
as the race to New Orleans
begins tonight.
USC will win its second
and a half national cham
pionship in five years. The
apocalypse is near if the
Trojans fail to give quar
terback John David Booty
some gumbo in New
Orleans in January. Ten
starters return on a
defense that will be the
best in the country. Booty
will throw for 3,500 yards
and whoever Pete Carroll
throws in at tailback will
run wild behind USC’s
stacked offensive line. The
Healthy diet, weight loss still possible on meal plan
I’m probably one of five
juniors on the meal
plan this year, but
that’s all right, because I
love the University’s dining
halls.
That being said, not
everything you see in there
will help you achieve your
fitness goals. Here’s a few
tips to keep the pounds off
when you’re hitting the
dining halls.
Stick to wheat bread.
It’s a complex carbohy
drate that comes with
fiber and protein, and
won’t give you the unwant
ed calories that white
bread can pack on.
Go easy on the pasta,
and omit the alfredo sauce.
When you see this white
sauce, you should think
butter, heavy cream, and
cheese. Try ladling marina

Isner set new ATP
records at the Legg Mason
Classic by winning five
straight matches in a third
set tiebreak and serving
144 aces throughout the
week, the highest total in a
non-Grand Slam event
since the tour started keep
ing stats in 1991.
“All of his former team
mates are very excited with
the success that he’s been
having,” said Georgia ten
nis coach Manny Diaz.
“It’s great seeing the
success he’s enjoying, he
represents our program
well. His demeanor on the
court and his attitude
couldn’t represent the pro
gram any better.”
Returning junior and
former teammate of Isner,
Josh Varela, helped to sum
up the team sentiment.
“We are all proud of his
accomplishments on the
tour this summer,” Varela
said.
“We all really miss him,
not only because of his ten
nis, but also because he is
just a fun guy. John was
probably the most likeable
guy on our team. And it’s
really cool seeing him on
TV and being like, ‘l’m
good friends with him.’”
After his improbable run
to the final, Isner proceed
ed to be eliminated in the
first and second rounds,
respectively, of his next two
tournaments.
Even after the losses,
Isner remained confident
about his future as a pro,
even about gaining entry
into the U.S. Open.
