At Little Kings Shuffle

on Tuesday night.
As the night progressed,
it became apparent to
O’Looney and her support
ers she would not win.
Though the odds were
not in her favor, O’Looney
appreciated the support
she received during her
campaign.
“The people I love the

said. “I’m proud of the race
I ran.”

A Mayor-elect Nancy Denson kisses her
grandson at her election party. Her campaign
emphasized bringing businesses to Athens.
of support from the art and
music crowd in Athens.
William Orten Carlton
said he has been an
O’Looney supporter for 20
years. He said he likes
O’Looney because of her
continued support of the
local music and art scene
and small businesses.
“If someone was inter
ested in bringing art here,
she’d talk to them,” he
said.
Many of O’Looney’s sup
porters said her experience
and progressivism set her
apart from Denson.
“She had really proven
she could be a strong lead
er during her previous
term,” said Jessica Sterling,
a master’s student in ecol
ogy at the University.
“Gwen is a true progres
sive. She is the kind of
leader this town needs.”
O’Looney said the
weather played a signifi
cant role in voter turnout.
“On the second (of
November] we had a lot of
people vote after five when
they got off of work,” she
said. “This time around we
had tornadoes.”
Despite the weather,
O’Looney recognized the
hard work Denson put into
the campaign.
Kaiser said she thinks
Denson will surprise many
Athens residents.
“I think Nancy repre
sents a broad constituency
of folks. She understands
the issues that fiace Athens
and she has faced a lot of
the issues herself,” Kaiser
said. “My mother was
raised in poverty. Really,
she worked her way
through it and I think she
was driven in to public ser
vice because she was raised
by a family who served in
law enforcement. She’s just
the epitome of the true
public servant.”

Through an open
records request, The Red
& Black obtained a photo
graph of a 1.75-liter bottle
of 80 proof Mr. Boston
Vodka which was recov
ered by University Police
during the game after
Burnett’s ejection.
The photograph was
taken on the cell phone of
University police Sgt. Allan
Hatcher.
Since the incident,
Burnett has maintained he
was not very drunk inside
the box.
According to Burnett,
he was approached by a
stadium official while in
the bathroom and asked to
leave before the bottle of
vodka was discovered on
the way out.
After he was asked to
step down as editor; The
Atlanta Journal-
Constitution reported
Tuesday Burnett said, “I
believe I made the wrong
choice, but on the same
token, I believe it was
blown up into something
much larger.”
In a Tuesday e-mail to
The Red & Black, Burnett
wrote, “It was a mistake to
enter President Adams'
box after drinking, one
that I take full responsibil
ity for. I regret that I made
that decision, and sincerely
regret that my actions
have reflected negatively
on the University, The Red
Si Black and myself. I can
only hope to learn from
this mistake and move
on.”
