The June intention of Pope John Paul II
is for the rediscovery of the evil of sin and
the merciful heart of Jesus.
The intention is explained: That, in the
light of the merciful heart of Christ, a
sense of sin and the value of regular con
fession be rediscovered. “Conscience is a
learner, not a teacher,” Pope Pius XII
said. It can help one rediscover sin. Mercy
is not a handout, for in giving mercy, one
also receives it. Pope John Paul II has
noted that a kind of ‘mercy’ is shown by
each person to the Son of the eternal
Father when one has a change of heart and
repents. Opening to Christ’s mercy in con
fession can be a mutual gift of hearts.
