Ethics Seminar
At Berry College
Dr. Mark Jordan, associate professor at The
Medieval Institute of Notre Dame University
and a leading scholar of ancient philosophy, will
direct a four-week seminar in classical ethics
June 11 through July 7 at Berry College.
“Many of the ethics courses taught in univer
sities and colleges today focus on applied ethics-
business, legal or medical ethics,” according to
Dr. David McKenzie, program coordinator and
head of the Department of Religion and
Philosophy at Berry College.
"The applied ethics courses are crucially im
portant, but they need to be supplemented by a
strong awareness of the classical tradition of vir
tue with its focus on the development of
character and an appreciation for the ideal of
beauty, truth, and goodness for their own sake.
“There is, of course, much concern for moral
integrity in the United States, and an accom
panying desire to reincorporate values into con-
ricula at all educational levels,” McKenzie con
tinued. “This seminar is an attempt to address
those concerns. It is unique in that it provides an
opportunity for faculty from diverse disciplines
to work together on classical ethics.”
Fifteen Berry College faculty members will
participate in the seminar, which is sponsored by
a grant from the National Endowment for the
Humanities. Presenters for the program in addi
tion to Jordan will include Dr. Pam Hall, assis
tant professor of philosophy, Emory University;
Dr. Konnie Kolenda, professor of philosophy,
Rice University; Dr. Edward Halper, professor
of philosophy. University of Georgia; and Dr.
Eugene Garver, professor of philosophy, Chair
of Thinking, St. John’s University, Minnesota.
The seminar, which is free and open to the
public, will be from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon,
Monday through Friday and from 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday through Thursday. There will be no ses
sions on Wed., July 4.
