I was returning from the Indies,
-Jest with what to me '(and to Nan
cv) was wealth, enraptured with th
prospect of future bliss. The sailo
a the mast-head announced land
'fhe glad sound was the harbinge
of happiness and delight. YVhe
n ght came the light appeared. T
nie it was the torch of Hymen, lead
jng to jov, to love, and to extacv.
INI N ancv ( for she had heard from
us but three davs out) faithful to her
absent Tar, with patience, fond anx-
ietv, and hope, waited my approach.
And now—for never on such an oc
casion is the inimitable Dibdin a
moment absent from mv memory,
. “And as the much-lov’d shore we near,
In fancy we behold the roof,
1 Where dwelt a friend and partner dear,
Ot faith and love a match left proof.”
. f Cheerly indeed did the sea-boy in
the chains, sing out to the pilot, the
lessening depth of water, and all was
jollity and glee on board. O my
Nancy ! how your poor Tar’s warm
heart throbbed with transport at the
•idea of once more pressing you in a
tender and •affectionate embrace !
But—a small sail hove in sight
... between U3 and port. She neared
• yis fast-—and soon her boat was along
side, upon its accursed errand. A
British lieutenant came on board,
called al' h mds, and examined the
crew. O Heavens ! what a scene
fo> me ! Home, and all the world
held dear for me. in view—the joys
cf meeting multiplied by an absence
«f three years—a tender mother and
sister—a fond father and brother—
ala r ! tne reflection almost sinks me
—•a charming girl, the betrothed pari
n' r of my soul, waiting to receive
nje with raptures of affection anti
Jove !—and all this entrancing pros
pect, this earthly Paradise, just open
ing upon my delighted senses—all
■ r this foretaste of Heaven’s highest
bliss wrested from my grasp, and
reg-
led.
THE .7OHRTN’AT..
H EDNESDAF, Octobhr ir.
A gentleman from Natchez,
who passed through the Creek Na
tion a few days ago, and arrived here
yesterday, communicated to the Edi
tor the following intelligence:—That
a Surveyor with a small detachment
of United States’troops, had set out
from Fort Stoddard a short time
past, to trace a read from that place
which should open a communication
with Tennessee and|Kentucky...That
after they had made some progress
and advanced into the Creek Nation,
they were stopt by the Indians, who
denied the right of the United States
to mark any road through their lands
without their consent, which thev
said had not in this instance been
granted. They had placed the Sur
veyor and his detachment under
guard, and detained them as prison
ers. Our informant adds, that he
conversed with the I.ieutenant, who
had command of the detachment,
and received from him the foregoing
particulars. He further states, that
he understood the Indians would ve
ry sooon have “ a Talk” on the sub
ject, and had dispatched a Runner
to Col. Hawkins, to apprize him of
it.
Dunkirk, auoust 21.
A gentleman from Gottcnburgh,
who quitted that port on the 8th of
die present month states, that previ
ous to that time intelligence had
been received of an order at Chris-
tiansand for the release of all Ame
rican vessels brought in there, which
had not been takeu when under the
guard of a British convoy. In conse
quence of that regulation three ships
of the United States with valuable
cargoes, had been released, and it
was hoped that this concession would
declared war agaist France. It ap
pears by Goldsmith’s secret treaty,
that Bonaparte had agreed to talc,
possession of Algiers.

A letter from Rostock gives Unfa

measures of great severity had been
resorted to in that harbour against all
American ships, and that none of
them were permitted to land any part
of their cargoes.

If Napoleon adheres to his decl

difficulty even in point of etiquette,
as to the remains of our orders in

Accounts received last night from

After this declaration on the pari
of the French government that their
decress are revoked and shall cease
to he in force from the 1st of Novem
ber, there is nothing that can rea
sonably prevent a declaration on our
part, that the measures adopted b\
us, expressly on the principle of re
taliation, should cease to be in force
at the same time with the obnoxious
decrees. From the concluding mem
ber of the sentence, it indeed ap

ted by the English.
Any backwardness on our parts,
therefore, must embroil us with the
Americans, whom Napoleon now
addresses in the tone of fulsome flat

bend to his purposes.

which took place near Schnlma, as
