LOCAL MATTERS-
our murine and Commercial New*,
The Commercial and Marine Intelli
gpnco will hereafter be found on our
fourth rage- j
Arrest of Mr. G. B. Lamar.
Considerable talk was created on the
public streeis Saturday evening as the
pews spread of the arrest of this well-
l.w >wn citizen by a Government detective.
The arrest was quietly made late Satur
day afternoon while Mr. Lamar was en
joying a comfortable smoke at his son’s
residence, on Broughton street. The
nature of this arrest is of such a charac
ter, that, in obedience to a request from
tie authorities,, we forbear commenting
or divulging any further at present, pre
ying to await future developments of
the interesting case.
Mr. Lamar has been assigned- to com
fortable quarters, and is under stricfj sur
rdilance night and day, no oaq . being
allowed to visit or communicate with him
without a special permit. Some startling
disclosures will no doubt be made shortly,
which it would be imprudent on our part
fo reveal at present. . ,
From Augusta.
On Saturday afternoon the steamer Helen,
Opt. Reilly, arrived from Augusta, with a num
ber of passengers and a good freight. The Helen
reports as follows :
Left Augusta, Dec. 1st, at 1 p. m. There was
lour feet of water at the bridge. Passed the fol.
lowing steamers : Falcon, at Silver Bluff, bound
np; Eclipse, tied up in Beaches; Union, at
Griffin's Landing, bound down; Scorpio, at
Brown's Landing, bonnd down; Oak, above
Bushman's Lake, for Augusta ; Gen. Berry apd
Goodsell, tied up at Hirshman’s Lake ; Potter, a 1
pool Robin ; W. G. Gibbons and Express, below
fhrjsburg. ..
The steamer Scorpio, Capt. Rogers, also ar
med on Saturday from the same place.
The steamer Union, Captain Daniels, from Aa.
gusla, arrived yesterday evening The following
is her report: * . > T
Left steamers Amazon and L Enos, iu Augus
ta; passed steamers May, at Twigg’s Bar, bound
up; Standish, at Silver Bluff, bound up; Falcon,
st Hardman’s Landing, bound up; Eclipse, 8t
Gull Creek, bound down; Berry, at Hershman’s
Lake, bound up; met steamers Caldwell, at Ta-
lomico Landing, bound up; Goodsell, at Big Ran
dolph, bouud up; Oak, at White Woman Point,
bonnd up; Potter, at King Creek, bonnd np;
tjibbons, at Poor Robin, bound up; Express, at
l oiter s Landing, bound up.
Also, buried a negro, supposed to be the cook
on the steamer K H May, on Friday, at Shell
Bind, who was drowned about two. weeks ago,
Milking of the Comet.
Intelligence received in this city yesterday,
states that the steamer Comet,Capt. Horn, while
on her passage from Hawkinsville to this city,
wuh a cargo of cotton, struck a snag about eight
mties from Darien, and sunk. As the cargo oi
the Comet is composed of cotton, and mostly
above deck, it is supposed that the major part
will be saved. The boat is not seriously d»m-
iijed, and will be raised in a short time. There
is no insurance on the steamer, but nearly all
ibe cargo is covered by insurance in offices in
ibis city.
On the application of many prominent
citizfens, repfeeenting *31 the interest of
the <5%; Col. Edward »C. Anderrofc has
consented to be a candidate for the office
of Mayor of Savannah. His name -is,
therefore, presented to you fear your suf
frages. It is unnecessary ( to' urge upon
your consideration the character or ca
pacity of one so well known to you. He
has served you in the same -position be
fore, and the manner in iwhieh he dis
charged the duties of the office is fresh in
your memories. His recent sacrifices
and services in a cause which, whether
right Or wrong, was the cause of his
State and his people, should give him ad
ditional claims upon those who served
apd, suffered with him. It i* confidently
believed that"these claims will not be ig
nored at the ballot-box.
The following ticket is placed in ubou-
nation, and will be supported by
Mas® ’
From the South.
By ibc arrival of the steamer H. M. Cool,
M 'esterday, from Darien, we learn that the water
j 'o the AltamahaTiver has commenced filling.
■ There is considerable cotton on the wharves a t
B Darien, and flats are arriving daily from the in-
gj teipr. The steamer Cool brought to this place a
I large quantity of very fine mullet packed in ice,
I vbich readily commanded s dollar a bunch.
| They are decidedly the finest fish of the kind we
S bare seen in our market for a long time.
Utarinc Disaster,

I® 1 October last by Messrs. Bell, Wylly &
[• Christian, with lumber and passengers for Nas-
