address TO MV SKGAIt.
Yes, social friend, 1 fove tbee well,
In learned doctor’s spite;
I love th> frgfan* misty spell,
1 love thy calm delight
Whal though they tel] with phizes long,
Our years are sooner past;
1 would reply with reasons strong,
‘1 hey’re sweeter, while they last—
And oft, mild tube, to me thou art
A monitor, though still,
Thou speak’st a lesson to my heart
Beyond the preacher’s skill.
When in the lonely evening hour,
Attendee hut by thee;
O’er history’s varied page I pour,
Man’s late in thine I see;—
Awhile like thee the hero burns,
* And smoke® and fumes around.
Arid th n like tlvee to ashes'turns,
Add mingles with the ground.
Thhu’rt like the worthy man that gives,
To g-.odn* s every day,
The fragrance of whose virtue lives
When he has passed away.
Oft when rnv snowy column grows,
And breaks and fades away,
1 trace bow mighty realms thus rose,
Then tumbled to decay.
From beggar’s rags to monarch’s robes,
One common doom is cast.
Sweet nature’s works; the mighty globe,
Must all burn out at last.
And What is he who smokes thee now,
A little moving heap,
Thßt soon like thee to dust must bow,
thcc in &sles sle^p;
A .,’l when I sec thy smoke roll high,
TPy ashes dow nsvard go,
M- dunks ’tia thus my onl shall fiy,
Thus leave ny body low.

There are still two opinions in the city
respecting the settlement of the Turkish
and Russian disputes. It is reported that
letter iias been received from Odessa,
dated the 21st May, N. S. which sta’es
that advices had that day arri ed from
Ketchen on. (the head quarter* of the Russ
ian army) by which information had been
received that the Turkish anny was in mo
tion, but that it neither had nor would re
tire from Moldavia and Wallachia, accor
ding to the solemn agreement made at
I Constantinople. At the time of their ad
vices there had been fully sufficient time
for the retreat of the army had it been in
tended. ’The Turks will no doubt, hold
out expectations of compliance with the
Russian demands until they know the re.-
suit to reduce the G eeks, and in thus act
ing they show great ability in their charac
ter as diplomatists. These advices further
slate that at present the Russian, army
in no situation to enforce its demands on
the Turkish Empire, It is without pay
and clothing, and it be besides badly fed.—
Theie is the post authority further for stal
ing, that it is just now in a state of muti
ny, there being betwixt 40 aod 50 officers
under trial at Ketchenou, at the time the
letters came away, for disobedience of or
ders and actual rebellion, lhe nobility
in that part of the Russian empire are also
lepresented as being very much dissatisfi
ed This letter from Odessa is at variance
with accounts from Bucharest, dated the
22(1 May, and which represents the Turk
ish army as retiring. Still the one from
Odessa is stated to have been written by a
gentleman of high character to his friend
in London. And if there be in his acount
any deception, he must have been manifest
ly deceived, which, from his connexions,
not probable Odessa lemainsafi ee port for
is one, if not for two years longer.

The following frightful account is given
in a letter from one ot the most eminent
English merchants resident in Constanti

made known here; Theodore Ru'.li, Gi va

tages sunt out from Hein: Theodor Z.ffi,
Assistant in the new Turkish Coucellaria.
The s'ores of these poor people have been
sealed up, and the Porte is vigilantly in
search of any other property; The cause
ol their destruction, it is said, is because a
correspondence between them and the in
surgents ot Scio was intercepted. This in
my opinion is not very plausible; for these
people would certainly have quitted the
capital, like many others, were this the
case, ami would n t have remained here, at
the head of rheir establishments, extending
their cir.tnercial pursuits instead of curtail
ing them.”

CONSTANTINOPLE, May 26.
A cry of horror will tesound throughout
Europe when the new cruelties in Sci.t are
made known. All are massacred. Even
the 78 prelates who were detained as hos
tages have been rut to pieces in the fort.
The generous F-ench Consul, Digeon, is
the most to he pitied. He had gone into
the village and proclaimed the Turkish am
nesty, and at the same time pledged him
self for the Sultan’s giving paiilon. The
inhabitants on this surrendered all their
arms, on Which the Asiatics tell on 13 villa
ges, and executed a general massacie. All
fell without defence under the sword of
the Tut ks, who behaved with the most re
fined cruelties* The whole island is a se
pulchre : the few women and children who
were sheltered in the French Consulate
are in the deepest misery. Sortie G'rek
still combat in the mountains, but their de
struction is certain, ‘f hese events have
excited such terror here, that nobody now
ventures to intercede fur a'Greek family,
for fear of being included in the same pro
scription.
SEMLIN, Juris.’
Letters from Bitoglia of M.y ‘2S have
been received at Belgrade, from which it
appears tha* consternation prevails in that
part of the tenantry. The Turks are ad
vancing in g-re.t force towards LatisS3.
The ageirts of the English are sard to have
succeeded tn inducing the Suloits and Al
banians to submit to C'hourschid Pacha,
who will soon effect his junction with the
Pacha of Halonichi, to march through Li
vadia against the \lorea. Decisive events
may therefore soon be expected in these
parts. Nothing but a miracle can save the
Greeks, as a (fairs now stand. It is affirm
ed that the operations of the Turks both by
sea and land, are directed by English offi
cers, and that they have promised entirely
tn quell the insurrection of the Greeks be
fore the termination of the negotiations
with Russia.

IRELAND.
The first labo 1 - of our day, and the last is
so press the necessity of adopting the most
active and immediate measure for mitiga
ting the miseries of the Irish people. It will 1
seen in our report of the Parliamentary
proceedings last night, that the accounts
have not exaggerated the misery. Nay,
what language could exaggerate it, it is
vast, sweeping, terrific. Let the imagina
tion conceive, if it can conceive, a scene of
such appalling distress as that ol whole
parishes having been for three Hays with
out food, and, hopeless of relief in this
world, flocking round the minister of > e
parish to prepare them for the next! This
is no highly coloured picture—would to
Heaven it were! It is, unfortunately, hut a
faint and feeble sketch of the calamity un
der which a large part of Ireland is at this
moment groaning. The lo'lowing ha
been sent us as part of a letter from a Cler
gyman in the county of Galway:
“I am daily witnessing scenes of more
harrowing distress than eye almost ever
saw or tongue ever told. You know the
scarcity to which we have been for some
time expo-ed. Conceive the a<£ony ol
each family seeing tiie stock of .provisions
decrease dai'v—no prospect of relief, and
famine rapidly approaching. I had been
labouring in public and in private to
preach patience. It was not necessary.
No reproach was uttered—no angry feed
ing was evinced—but families clung to
gether with closer affection, as if in the
j ret tain knowledge of being soon separated
jf.irpver tent the slow apj horrible death
by (amine ! At li s* the hunger was raging;
it then gave.place in some to excessive
f'intieg-. ami depression—in others to vi
ole'rt fever—some struggled long—others
sank at once; but the wasted forms of the
poor creatures —the glazed eve—the Ici
low ami urk cheek!! ! have seen in the
exercise of my dwties, father and soil dy
ing by each other’s side—and 11*. f* infant
yet living, hanging upon the Veast of its
(just departed mother. God have mercy
uvon us, and stop this dreadful calamity.
