The account by the Hamburgh mail,
estimate the loss of the French, in the al
fair of the 15th alt. at upwards of 2000
killed and nearly 2000 prirohers ; bat
when this statement is compared with
the letter of Col. Crauford, and the ac
count of gen, Jourdan, it will molt pro
bably be deemed an exaggeration of the
although it is obvious that their

the Hope being manned with 2 four
pounders, which Ihe has carried for seve

at an American veil'd, and warned them
to keep off, which being disregarded, he
found it neccfiary to ass on the de eafive,
and pointing his cannon over the Item,
he made so liberal use of his ammunition,
that the tender’s crew (truck the Britilh
colours, and called for quarters, where
upon the Hope’s crew gave three cheers,
and told them they might depart. At
this time the sloop of war got under way
Irom Tortola, and pursued the Ameri

By the Hamburg Packet, Capt. Clay,
from Liverpool, we learn that general

At theclofe of the election, the gene

triumph ; a large body of ship carpen

a flag reprelenting him on horseback
trampling on the American colours.
r i he Americans in that port took no
tice of the .transaction,. and Capt. Ro

another citizen, proceeded to the Hull

the general, who appointed to meet them
at the committee-room the fame even

committee for conducting general Tarie

of the flag, and fatisfied the citizens by
declaring that it (hould be eraied.

NORFOLK, September 6,
Ship Eliza f‘covered.
Capt. .Lambeth arrived here yester
day irom New-York, informs that the
lhip Eliza, American property, from the
Lie of May, with a cargo oi fait, lately
captured within three miles ol the Capes,
by the Britilh frigate the Thetis, ana
inluitingly kept under her guns in
Hampton Road for fix days, has been
recovered by the captain and is now fafe

ried away her fore and maintopmufts,
and put into the Hook to get others—
Capi. FluUey of the Eliza had add refs
enough to persuade the prize mailer to
let him go up to New- York in company
to buy the lpars, and. leiurned with 8 or
10 ot his brother Yankee captains, anu
conveyed his own lhip up to the city.
Now it the Eliza, an American veiiei,
