HTMN ON WAR,
WHILE founds of War are heard around,
And death and rnin strew the ground;
?o tliee we look, on thee we call,
he Parent and the Lord of all.
Thou, who haft damp'd on human kind
The image of a hcav’n-born mind,
And in a father’s wide embrace
Haft cherifh’d all the kindred race;
O fee 1 with what infatiate rage
Thy sons their impious battles wage ;
How spreads deftruHion like a flood,
And brothers shed their brothers blood !
See guilty paffiems spring to birth,
And deeds of hell deform the earth;
While righteousness and justice mourn,
And love and pity droop forlorn.
Great God S wl*fe pow’rful hand can bind
The raging wa\cs, the furious wind,
O bid the human tempest cease,
And hush the mad’ning world to peace.
With rev’rence may each hoftileland
Hear and obey that high command,
Thy Son’s bled errand from above,
“ My creatures, live in mutual love ?’*
AN EC DOT l.
DURING the late war, eighty old German
soldiers, who, after having fervecl under differ
ent monarchs of Europe, had retired to Ame
rica, and converted their swords into plough
fbares, voluntarily formed thrm'e'.ves into a
company, and diftingwilhed theinfelves in va
rious actions, on the fide of liberty. The cap
tain was nearly one hundred years old, and had
been in the army forty years, and preient in
frventeen battles. The drummer was ninety
four ; and the youngest man in the corps on
the verge of (evenly. instead of a cockade,
each nun wore a piece of black crape as a
mark of sorrow for being obliged, at so ad
vanced a period of fife, to bear arms : “ But,”
laid the veterans, “ we fbould be deficient in
gratitude, if we did not a£i in defenae of a
country, which has afforded us a generous afy-
Jun>. and protected us from tyranny and op
prefiion.” Such a band of soldiers never be
fore, perhaps, appeared in any field of battle.
