Death of .1. K. I'aulillii^.
The telegraphic dispatch in auother
column auuouuces the death of this dis
tinguished author and Ex-Secretary of the
Navy. Hardly, remarks the Richmond
Dispatch, have the flowers of Spring com
menced to raise their tiny heads over the
new made grave of Washington Irving,
ere the literary world is called on to la
ment the death r,f his intimate associate
and former co-editor, dames Kirkc Baubl
ing. He was in the 81st year of his age.
Texas—The Weather, ell'.
The Houston Telegraph of Saturday, I
learns that tho frost on Wednesday night \
killed the forming cotton in all tho upper
country, and that many will be obliged
t o replant. Luckily the great bulk of the
crop is not yet up. The corn was not so
much injured.
The Ualvestuu News of the same date
also reports ice in various parts of the
country iu the early part of the last week.
The News thinks the injury to the grow
ing crops will ho hut small.

(Expulsion of Gen. Illebley.
A appears by tho telegraphic an
nouncement elsewhere, the Knights of
the Holden Circle have expelled (Icnernl
Bickley from the Order, and appointed
I’ol. tirecti!iuw to i upersedo him as com
mandcr-in-chiof. Notwithstanding the
news conies in such unquestionable shape,
we await further particulars before we
ullach implicit credence to the report.—.
The telegraph iu this as iu many previ
ous instances, may bo incorrect ; the
aniiouncement may have been made by
some personal enemy of Bickley, or some
one hostile to the Order and to the South.
We publish it, but receive it “with many
grains of allowance.”
It may be true -admitting it to be so,
its results involve (ion. Itickley and not
tho K. (i. The existence urn! success
of the Order did nut depend upon the fate
of Itickley ; its designs arc no less com
mendable than before, and if tho expul
sion has been made, and was based on
Miflieiont reasons, the fact in itself should
inspire renewed confidence in the mem
bership and recommend it to the South
ern people.

In the Upson Pilot, wo find the pro
ceedings of a meeting of the stock l
holders in the Thomaston and Uarnesville
Railroad, assembled in tho former place
on the 3d iusl. Its object was to devise
means to relieve tbe ltoad of its pecunia
ry difficulties and embarrassments. A
resolution was unanimously adopted to
authorize the Directors to sell SBO,OOO
worth of additional stock in the company
at par value; and that a guaranty bo
given pledging the annual income of the
ltoad lor the payment of seven per cent
interest per annum on said stock.
The chairman appointed a committee
of ten persons to confer immediately with
every stockholder, and obtain his written
consent to abate his stock fifty per cent,
and also to obtain additional subscrip
tions to the company’s stock to bo pre
ferred in the payment of dividends.—
The committee were required to report
at a future meeting to he held in Thom

month.

We take pleasure iu statiDg that wo have been
selling Mr. A. D. Brown’s Wiieat Fan for the hist
two years almost exclusively. We have sold them
to all sections of the surrounding country, both
iu (ieorgia and Alabama, and they have giveu
general satisfaction. We have never heard any
complaint of the first one yet, and believe they
are tbe best Fans now in use. We have formerly
shipped Funs from the North for our own trade,
but we have abandoned them, Mr. Brown’s Fan
having superseded them entirely.

Prof. CIIAS. UPHAM SHEPARD, of the South
Carolina Medical College, in a letter addressed to
B, M. Rho.les, the proprietor, dated Charleston,
January 3,1800, says :
“The two sumples examined, aa selected by my
self from the warehouse of Messrs. Khett Jk Rob
son, of this city, appear to be, as nearly as possible,
identical in their mode of preparation and com
position, aud the article cannot be too highly com
mended for the uniformity of the mixture in tbe
several ingredients present, aud the impalpable
fineness of the Phosphate and the Sulphate of
Lime. It is the richest preparation 1 have yet
seen for the Soluble Phosphate, and in this respect
cannot well be improved upon. The insoluble
la'thly ingredient does not appee.r to bo
than is incident to the most carefully prepared
fertilizer.”
THE MODE OF APPLICATION IS VERY
SIMPLE: either broadcast or in the bill or drill—
lot) to 2uo pounds per acre. This Manure does not

being strictly nourishing, can be used any way
the convenience of the planter may suggest.
