Fire !
Last night about 11 1 o’clock, the Livery
Stables of Messrs. A. & J. Gainmell, on
Jackson street, between Franklin nrui
Bryan, were discovered to bo cu tiro.
It had made considerable progress before
it was discovered, and in a very short
time the building was entirely enveloped
in flames. There were in tho Stables at
tho time six mules and fifteen horses, not
one of which was saved, so rapid was
the progress of tho flames. A large
quantity of hay was also destroyed.
The fire then communicated to the
outhouses of several dwellings in the
vicinity of the Stables, but through the
exertions of the firemen, was prevented
from reaching the dwellings.
We have not learned the extent of the
loss, but judge it will not fall much short
of $12,000. The Stables aud hay, we
understand, were insured, but have not
learned the amount. Fortunately, there
was very little wind, or else the destruc
tion of property might have been much
greater.
Our noble firemen, ever prompt at the
call of duty, were early on the ground.
The city is indeed fortunate in having
such a prompt and aettve department,
for hardly had the first sounds of the
alarm bell died away ere some of the
companies wore on the spot.

Tho ißank Robbery—Recovery of the
Money.
Yesterday morning about sun-rise a
negro belonging to Dr. Fogle, and hired
by Mr. Rutherford, returning to the
house of the latter, discovered a bundle
under a bridge near the Orphan Asylum,
which on examination, proved to be
money. The negro immediately carried
it to Marshal Hughes, and the amount
was found to be $30,001 of that abstracted
from the Agency of the Marino Bank on
Monday night last. At a later hour in
the day the balance of the whole amount
was recovered by the Bank officers, but
under what circumstances we have not
precisely learned.
Suspicion resting upon Mr. E. B.
Holmes, the bookkeeper, he was formally
arrested yesterday morning, under a
warrant issued on oath of Mr. W. P.
Hunter, the Cashier of the Bank at Sa
vannah, who, with Mr. Plant, Agent of
the Bank af Macon, had been in the city
a day or two to assist in ferreting out the
matter. The warrant was taken out for
the amount of SIOO. Being brought be
fore Justices Quin, Turman and Patter
son, yesterday afternoon, Mr. Holmes
waived an examination and gave bail in
the amount of $2,500 for his appearance
at the next term of the Superior Court,
Mr. Holmes is a young man of extra
ordinary business capacity, and has al
ways sustained a character above suspi
cion. His arrest under the circumstances
has excited in the community generally,
profound regret and the deepest sympa
thy for the accused, as well as his high
ly respectable relatives.
River Kewi.
The steamer Munnerlynarrived ycster-_
day morning, from Apalachicola, and re
turned in the evening.
The Ben Franklin also arrived yester
day morning, and will leave for Apalachi
cola and intermediate landings this
morning at 8 o’clock.
The Oswichee did not leave yesterday,
but will do so this morning, at the same
hour as the Ben Franklin.
The River Bride will leave for Chatta
hoochee and Bainbridge at 7 o’clock this
morning.
Gus MeGiDDony.
AVednesday morning, Mr. R. A. McGib
bony, familiarly known ns Gus McGib
bony, came over from Montgomery in
accordance with a telegraphic dispatch
from Mr. Bowers, Agent of the Marine
Bank, and with Marshal Hughes render
ed efficient service in the recovery of the
money recently taken from that institu
tion. McGibbony seems always to be in
request in matters of the kind.

In the Troy (Ala.) American, we find
the proceedings of a meeting held at Brun
dige, Pike county, for the purpose of
considering the project, now on foot, of
running a branch railroad from Troy,
intersecting the Mobile and Girard Road
at some point near Herndon’s bridge on

far beyond the expectations of all, and
assurance was given that double, and if

An Old Woman’s Twenty-fifth
Birtliday,
There is now residing in Elmira, an old
lady named Mrs. Hanna Webber, who
reached her twenty-fifth birlh-day, on the
last Wednesday of February, and yet is
one hundred years old. This remarkable
circumstance is attributable to the fact
that she was born on February 29th,
1760; as that was leap year, there have
been but twety-tive recurrences of that
day from the time of her birth to the
present time.

Sore Throat Plague ami Sore
Throat.—This quality of seizing hold aud
causing tho expulsion of depraved humors, is pos
sessed by no other medicine than Brandreth’s
Pills. They operate only upon the tissues in
volved in, that is affected by the diseaso. In fact,
they seize upon those humors, not so much from
preference as from natural affinity, because their
life is below those of the surrounding parts, and
which, settling on the tissues of the throat, that
is, around the throat region, produces sore throat,
sore throat plague , and tho severe headache and
fever. Within au hour after four or six pills are
taken, there is felt a peculiar creeping in the part
affected, a sort of collecting u? of the diseased
humors ready for expulsion, No hurt or weaken
ing effect can ever arise from their use, because
they caunot act upon healthy parts. Taken early
they prevent all organic diseases. Ch how impor
tant iu eiekness to use medicine which only extin
guishes the diseaso and leaves no evil effect behind.
Sold at Dr. Brandreth’s principal office, No. 294
Canal street, New York, and by J. W. BROOKS,
corner Broad and Randolph streets, and by all
respectable dealers in medicines. apl6-lm
To tlie Planters of the Soutlil—
The great difficulty in managing diseaso among
the negroes is their great aversion to take the
medicine prescribed by physicians. “ Dr. J. Bovee
Dod’s Brandy Cathartic,” for Liver Complaint,
Costiveness, Dyspepsia, Bilious Affections, and all
diseases requiring a purgative, is a truly reliable
aud effective remedy. Asa general Family Ca
thartic it is specially desirable, as it is pleasant to
the taste aud can easily be given to children and
negroes, who always refuse the nauseous pills
with which tho country is flooded.
Every family should be supplied with this val
uable medicine, as it is cheaper, moro agreeable,
and equally effective as the best pills which are
made. CIIAS. WIDDIFIELD k CO., Proprietors,

No female in the should be without them.
Tho “Vegetable Cathartic Syrup” lor infants,
children and delicate females is a perfect substitute
for calomel, and yet as pleasant to the taste as

its operation. It is as effective as blue mass or
