Mr. A. S. Dennu, late French Vice Con
sul at Mobile, (lied in that city on Satur
day the “lb inst. Ho was a resident of
Mobile sirce 1832 and at various times
occupied prominent positions in the city.
So wo learn from tbo Evening News.
Reduction of Fare.
Tbo Atlanta Confederacy states thut
all the Kail ltoads in Georgia, except the
Western and Atlantic, have reduced the
rates of fare one-half to delegates to
Charleston.
Bark Fanny Holms.
The Apalachicola Times says about
$4,000 worth of damaged cotton, most of
it in bulk, taken from the wreck of the
Fanny Holms, has been sold, and about
forty bales more have been landed. It is
thought that more may be received.
Valuable Cargo.
The ship Sami. Locke, sayguhe Charles
ton Mercury, of the 18tb, cleared for
Havre yesterday, by Messrs. Wilkins &
Barnwell, with a cargo valued at $183,-
000, consisting of 004 bales Sea Island
Cotton, 2431 bales Upland Cotton, and
27 tierces Ilice.
The Crop.
Wm. P. Wright’s New York Cotton Cir
cular says the question of the crop lias
ceased to hove nny influence on the price
on this side of the Atlantic. The atten
tion of nil engaged in the trade will now
be directed to the prospects for the next
crop, and tlio season will bo watched
with close scrutiny.
The Union Bprings Gazette.
The last impression of this paper con
tains the announcement of the connec
tion of Samuel 1). Lary, Fsq., with the
editorial department. He makes his
ileljul in an able and gracefully written
salutatory, and will boa valuable acces
sion to that department of the paper. Wo
extend him a cordial welcome on his as
sumption of tlio tripod.
Dentil of nil Dili Citizen.
We learn from the Covington Times that
Mr. Benjamin Carr, for the last twenty
years a citizen of Covington, died at the
residence of John P. Carr, in that place,
on the night of the 7th inst., in the ‘.Hid
year of his ugc. lie leaves a wife (who
is 100 years of ago) and numerous friends
and relatives to mourn his departure.
& Dentil of A. £. Van Ilooac, Ek<|.
Wo regret to loom, says tlio Selma
Issue, from a friend, that A. 15. Van
House, Esq., Solicitor of the 7th Judicial
Circuit, of Alabama, was thrown from a
buggy, on Saturday last, and instantly
killed. The accident occurred about six
teen miles abovo Tuscaloosa, to which
place his body was carried on Sunday
morning. Mr. Van lloose was a man of
mark and promise, and in his death tlio
Stato loses a most efficient officer.
Fires.
A fire occurred at Manchester, Ohio,
twelve miles above Maysville, on the 7tli
inst., which consumed forty buildings.
The loss is $50,000.
The Cleveland Institute was partially
burned on tlio same day.
We learn, says the Atlanta Intelligen
cer, that a car load of cotton caught fire
at or near Fast Point, in this county,/on
yesterday afternoon about three or four
o’clock, aud was entirely oonsumed. The
lire engines of this city were sent for to
visit tlio scene of conflagration and pro
provont tlio further damage by tiro,
Righteous Verdict.
Olio of the most eminently just ver
dicts ever rendered in a Court of Justice,
was given on tlio sth inst. in King a Queen
county, Vo. Win. Henry liurkley shot
James Kroach for wilfully nnd malicious
ly slandering his daughter, a young lady
still in her teens and at school. The
charge of killing was admitted, and jus
tified by the atrocity and foulness of the
slander. When the decision of the court
was announced, and the accused acquit
ted, the wholo crowd arose simultaneous
ly to their feet nnd gave vont to the most
hearty approbation.
Case or Cu])t. Farnliant.
The Savannah Express of the 12th,
says this ease, a charge of piracy, in be
ing engaged in the slave trade, has been
postponed uutil the 24th of May, to ena
ble Justice Wayne to bo present and pre
side at the trial. The Government is
represented by Hon. Henry K. Jackson,
Jos. Gnnnhl, Fsq., and District Attorney
Cooper. Mr. Farnham will be defended
by some of tbo first Lawyers of Georgia,
aided by ouo or more distinguished coun
sel from New York city.
Hon. I)u\is,
The National Intelligencer, of the -Ith
move the anxiety which publications yes
terday respecting the health of this dis
tinguished Senator were calculated to im
part to his numerous friends at home aud
elsewhere. A severe inflammation in his
eyes rendered a surgical operation in one
of them necessary. This operation was
successfully performed by Dr. Stone, on
Saturday last, nnd we are happy to state
that Mr. Davis has so far recovered from
its edicts that lie hopes to be able tore
sumo his place in the Senate in two or
three days.”
knee Cotton-
The editor of the New Orleans Delta
has been shown some samples of the laco
cotton. It is represented to be a tine and
beautiful article, of staple nearly equal
to the Sea Island, and of light salmon hue,
lighter than nankeen. It was grown in
Hinds county, Miss., and sold at from 15
to 18 cents per pounJ. There is some
mystery (says the Delta) about the origin
ot this cotton. A romantic story is told
of a returning Nicaraguan patriot, born
aud raised in Mississippi, cue of Walker’s
men, who, being attracted, while on a
march, by the appearance of this cotton,
gathered some of the seeds and placed
them in his portmonnaic. On his return
home, wounded, sick, and when about to
die, he requested some relative to take
the seeds from bis portemonnuie and plant
them. This was done, aud the product
under good cultivation is this superior
artiole.
To be Regretted.
A lato issue of the Athens Banner inti
mates, that on account of the hostility of
the delegates from Muscogee county to the
” December resolutions,” retaliation will
bo made by the former section, on a prom
inent gentlemen of the latter who will !
stand in need of all the friends he can
get between now and Christmas.” We
presume the gentleman alluded to is
Senator Iverson. This paper though fa
voring his re-election for reasons hereto
fore urged, is neither his organ nor con
fidential ally, but we embrace the oppor
tunity to deprecate the tone nnd spirit of
the paragraph in question, and regret
the attempt to excite and arouse the sec
tional prejudice of one portion of the
State against another.
Hud the Banner expressed its disappro
bation of the record of the gentleman in
question, it might have excited our sur
prise, but we would have attributed it to
an honest difference of opinion ; but the
attempt to array one section against an
other to his prejudice, and for a reason
for which he is not responsible, is calcu
lated to work serious injury to the inter
ests of the State.
We can well understand the natural
preference of a particular locality forthe
advancement of those identified with it by
residence, and all the powerful influences
of association; but we can seo nothing
but tlio sheerest illibcrnlity and injustice
in opposing a man merely on account of
his place of residence. Talent is cosmo
politan in its nature and influence : the
services of the distinguished men of
Georgia are the common heritage of the
people of the State, irrespective of locali
ty, whether it he Athens or Columbus ;
unil other things being equal, Muscogee
county, wc undertake to say, is indiffer
ent from what particular section of the
State tlio representatives of her honor
and interests in Congress may bail.
Is lie honest '! Is lie capable in all res
pects ? are the only questions to be an
swered, nnd the only considerations that
should exert an influence in the selection
of incumbents of public offices.
If Senators Iverson and Toombs, or any
of their predecessors had had uo higher
claims on the people of the State, than the
more accident ofbeing residents of parti
cular localities, their records would not
have become a part of the history of the
Stato. Geographical prejudice when oDce
aroused in the State, would exert an un
due inlLicnco in tbo selection of public
officers and have all the force of an es
tablished precedent. Nothing would be
more difficult to overcome, and the prac
tice once obtained, would work a curse
to the State and gross injustice to her
worthiest sons.
Tlie Anticipated Duel.
Washington, April 13.—A popular
rumor says, thnt Pryor’s note to Potter,
asking him to leave the District of Colum
bia, for the purpose of receiving his chal
lenge, was not satisfactorily answered,
and that l’ryor had returned to the city.

best endeavors to press the difficulty to
the field for settlement,
Later. —Potter refused to leave the
District of Columbia to receive a chal

torily After twelve hours the challenge
was accepted by Potter, who named
bowio knives as weapons, and tlio open
air the place, the seconds to be armed

rejected by Pryor’s second, without con
sulting his principal, us vulgar and bar
barous. Lauder, Potter’s friend, then
offered to assume tlio quarrel, and fight
with pistols. This was also rejected, nnd
here the affair rests. Potter, is here in
the city, and Pryor is in Virginia.
It was reported that Senators Keitt
and Hammond acted as advisers to Chi
rentan. Pryor’s friend.

COLUMBUB, July 25th, 1857.
We take pleasure in stating that we have been
selling Mr A. D. Brovin’s Wheat Fan for the last
two years almost exclusively. We have sold them
to all sections of tho surrounding country, both
iu Georgia and Alabama, aud they Lave given
general satisfaction. We have never lieurd aDy
complaint of the first odc yet, and believe they
are the best Fans now in use. We have formerly
shipped Fans from tho North for our own trade,
but we have abandoned them, Mr. Brown’s Fau
having superseded them entirely.
