Sill Arp on Sill Veil.
Professor Koll y* just found out
that there never 'Was such a man as
William Tell. I <ton’t know that
krout-eatin Koll, but I’ll bet he’s mad
with some feller by the name of Tell,
and went to work lo undermine his
family. If there is a passel of folks
upon the face of the earth who enjoy
my contempt, it is them fellers who
are always tryin to pull down and
never build up. A man may do a
heap of good things, but if he makes
one little mistake they’l talk about
that and throw it up forever. They
always mention it with a but. “He’s
a very smart man, but. He would be
a great man, but. His intentions are
very good, but. Regular sappers and
miners they are. They suck all the
sap out of a tree to kill it, and then un
dermine it to throw it down.
Now, here’s a feller wbo can’t make
himself notorious in any other way,
and he goes to sappin and mininBill
Tell. Now, I don’t believe one word
of it. I was named for Bill, and if
there want no such man, then I’m no
body but Arp—that’s all. Thnt feller is
a fool, and lie’s got a big job on hand if
he thinks he can rob history of its best
story, and make a hundred millions of
folks believe what he says. He’s en-
wious of Bill. Because he can’t shoot
am apple, or string a cross-bow, or
make himself famous, he don’t want
anybody else to. Every few years
Some conceited fool attacks history.—
I understand they’ve got a society to
bile it down and stew it. Well, its
eoi4er like washing for gold—they
lose more than they catch.
Now it aint been very long since
ono feller denied that Bill Shakespeare
ever lived. Well they are sorter hard
on the Bills, aint they ! Another
wrota several columns to prove that
old Bonaparte died before he was born,
•and another man took up forty pages
of a yankce magazine to prove that
one of the Bourbons was livin in ob
scurity on the banks of Lake Michili-
mackinack* He hated old Bona
parte’s family so had that he was will-
iu to swindle a half-bred Canady In
dian onto the throne of France.
Now there was a Gesler, and ho
was a tyrant, and Bill Tell wouldeut
tip his hat to him, and he put him in
jail, and Bill’s son Henric was a noble
little hoy, and Honric was to die unless
Bill shot an apple off his head, and
little Henric was blindfolded and stood
firm as a rock and still as the grave,
and there was a prayer and a shot and
a shout, and the little boy was saved,
and the apple was hit in the center.
All that’s so, and Tell waylaid old
Gesler afterwards and killed him and
set Switzerland free. It ! s all so. Its
been in the books ever since I was
born. I’ve read it a hundred times,
and told it to Bull Run and Chicka-
hominy and Bob Lee, and all the lit
tle Arps, and I’m not going to take it
back, and if I had found out it wasent
true, I wouldent have told it for a
thousand dollars, and-I don’t like the
man who did tell it, nor the man, wo
man or child who believes it, for its
like robbin a dead preacher of his
tombstone, to rob history of William
Tell.
My opinion is that the peace and
happiness of the country is in danger
from these sappers and miners. We’ll
ail have to have a creed and swear
to it.
I believe in Geo. Washington and
his hatchet, and Isaac Newton and his
apple tree. I believe iu Bonaparte
and Shakespeare, and JackSon at the
battle of Ne<v Orleans. I believe in
Santa Claus and Pocahontas and John
Smith and Ben Franklin and Jefferson
Davis and Dixie, and the 4th of July
177G. I believe that an old man onct
found a rude boy up one of his apple
trees a stealin apples. I believe the
milk maid spilt her milk when she
tossed her bead and said, “Green it
shall be.” 1 believe in Robinson Cru
soe and his man Friday, and the island
of Juan Fernandes. I believe in old
mother Goose and Cinderilla and John
Robinson’s Circus. I believe in Gree
ley and Bennett and Prentice, and oth
er dead tAKjws, excBptJjfcm B»rd, late
of the Chattanooga Herald, deceased
I believe most solemnly that Bod But
ler stole spoons. I believe in the big
battles of Waterloo, and Bull Hun and
Therraopylo^-and Dorking and Leath
er’s Ford. I believe that Gen. Grant
told the truth when he said they had
two million six hundred and eighty-
eight thousand of soldiers in the field
in the late war. I believe that old
Sherman marched through Georgia
about half a mile behind mo and my
folks, and that Big John was saved by
tieing a knot in his 6teer’s tail. He
needent deny it, for I saw the knot.

The troublesome aspirations of the
Washington negroes to carry out Sum
ner’s supplementary bill in advance,
and pervade those hotels and restau
rants where whites most do congre
gate, received an unexpected set-back
yesterday. A victualler named Aman
had been summoned before the City
Police Court on complaint of a negro
appropriately named Foole,for refusing
to respest Foole’s orders for entertain
ment of himself and party. Aman gave
bond, and appealed to the United
States Criminal Court. Judge Mac-
Arthur thereupon reversed the decis
ion of the Gky Court, and in reversing
the case, declared that the" proprietor
of a hotel or restaurant was the proper
judge of who should receive entertain
