■ ST. JEROME’S LOVE.
In the following exquisite lines, the reader cannot fail
to recognise the genius and fancy of Thomas Moore.
Who is the maid my spirit seeks
Through cold reproof and slander’s blight?
Has she love’s roses on her cheek?
Is her’s an eye of this world’s light?
No—wan and sunk in midnight prayer,
Are the pale looks of her l love: „
Or if at times a light be there, N
Its beam is kindred from above.
I chose not her, my soul’s elect,
From those who seek their Maker’s shrine,
In gems and garlands richly decked,
As if themselves were tilings divine.
No! Heaven but faintly warms the breast,
That beats beneath a broidered veil;
And she who comes in glittering vest
To mourn her frailty, still is frail.
•
Not so the faded form I prize,
And love because its bloom is gone;
The glory in those sainted eyes
Is all the grace her brow’ puts on.
And ne’er was beauty’s dawn so bright,
So touching, as that form’s decay,
. Which, like the altar’s trembhng light,
In holy lustre wears away.

PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE.
Claiborne, (~Jtla.J Feb. 8, 1819.
“I have just returned from Pensacola, and on the 4th
instant, tile Spanish troops arrived oil Barances, with
authority from his majesty, relative to the res
toration of West Florida. Their force consists of two
ships, two brigs and two schooners; with six hundred
troops on board—one hundred of which are dragoons;
the remainder infantry. They have on board ouq. hun
dred thousand dollars, to pay their troops and mount
their cavalry. The whole under the command of a bri
gadier general. Times, here, seem quiet, in regard to
Indian hostility. Captain Boyles has removed all that
horde of banditti that has been so long.prawling below
the line, wantonly destroying the United States’ pro
perty at pleasure, and taking away the lives of our citi
zens with impunity. He has made a settlement on the
Chatahoochie, and erected a small fortification, which it
is supposed will be sufficient for their protection, as
they are strengthened with upwards of three hundaed
families from Georgia. What reception these adven
turous people may meet with from their new masters,
lam unable to conjecture, but I hope favorable. Colo
nel King is engaged in removing the United States’
iMuujmty, and will remove the troops to Montpelier.—
