Representatives and tho Presiding Of
ficer of the joint coovention osn have
nothing to no with tho question, .ei-1
oppt that we are to not on what was
dona by tho convention; and tho
Speaker Is awaio of tho fact that tho
Presiding officer of the joint conven
tion decided twico against tho points
raised by the gentleman Irom Massa
chusetts.
'The Speaker. The opinion oi the
Ohnir is tho same as before announced.
Tho point on whioli tho two hoOsos
separated waa on the objections made
bv the gentleman from Massachusetts.
The President of tho Senate, as the
members know very well, hesitated
as to tlie construction of tho joint res
olution, mid finally decided that tho
Scnato should retire; - Tho decision
and tho retiring were both on tho
point of the objection mado by .tho
gentleman from Massachusetts.
After some further points of ordor
I being raised by Messrs. Mungen and
Farnsworth, and 'overruled by the
Speaker, the question was token on the
direct question whether tho vote -of
Georgia should bo counted, nnd it was
decided iu the negative—yeas if,
nays 150—tho only Republicans vot
ing yon being Messrs Baker and
Hawkins.
The Houso—then whilo awaiting
tho i ( turn of tho Senate—disposod by
unanimous consent _ of considerable
routine business.
Mr. Young, of .Georgia, doolarod
that lie entered bis solemn protest in
the name of tho people and in tho
name ot tho Constitution, against the
action of die House.
Tim Speaker then, at 4,25, announc
ed that tho Houso would reoeive tho
Sennftl bl tho United States.
TlmTSmators entered tho hall for tho
third tlbu,- took the feats sot apart for
then^jfend Senator Wade, as presiding
officer, again called tho joint cflnvon-
t ion to order, and announced that the
afejMftions ot tho gentleman irom Mas-
'fitePnsetts woro overruled by the Sen-
i*Mr. Ilutlcr, (renewing the attack
itfipetiioualy). Mr.President,Iriso to
a Qubnliun ot tf.’y-
gavel was made tj this quoation.
. Mr. Baiks (making an effort to
throw oil ipon tho troubled waters)
asked leave to piako a suggestion
which he itought; would relieve the
convention rom the difficulty in which
it was placid.
Mr. Kldsdgo objected, saying that
he wantodi Ires fight, and that if any
body waa gsing to pitch in thoy should
all nave ai equally fair chance.
The Prislding Officer. Objection
U mado. No debato is id order. . The
vote will hs counted according to the
resolution.
Mr. lloiton (aside, hut daringly).
You can’; do it.
The Residing Officer. Tellers will
proceed with tho count.
Objoiliops woro vocileratcd by seve
ral member* pf the opposition.
Mr. Banks again essayed to restore
tranquility, but his words of peaoo
Woro not listened to. •
Mr. Wood (impatiently) Let the
Ohair do its duty. I demand a oouut.
Mr, Butler. Mr President, 1 move
that the convention disolvo, and that
the Senato have leave to retire.’ Ex-
citement. ! r, “
Mr. Bingham. I. call tho gentle
man to order.
Mr. Wood. Go on with tho count.
Mr. 8hallabarger*(\vho waB trying
to have order restored) went quietly
to the Clerk’s desk and suggested the
course that! hould bo pursued.
Win thp midst of all this turmoil and
excitement, Senator Conkling, one of
the tollers, rose to annonneo tho result
of the Vote. His first sentence was
drowned in.vooiferous shouts of “No

Senatorial aide of the Houso. The

Mr. Butler. From that decision I
take an appeal:
The Presiding Officer (with cool

the same way. [Shouts of laughtor,]
•Mr. Van Horn, of Missouri, made a

The Presiding Officer (not minding

Senator Doolittle. Mr. President,
I rise to a point of order. Everything
