MONDAY, APRIL 1.
The stock of Cotton in Mobile is 36,572 bales •
The quantity of rain, which has fallen within
the last two or three weeks, is remarkable, it is
noticed particularly in the papers West of us.
A passenger in the Alliens Stage informs us
that there was a considerable fail of snow, at
Washington, Wilkes county, Geo. on Friday
morning, it had not all melted from the top of
the stage, at breakfast time.
ET We are requested to say, mat the Exhibi
tion of the Panorama of Waterloo will close with
this week. Those, who have uot gratified them
selves by a visit, will lose opportunity after
Saturday.
At a Meeting ol ttie Beard of Trustees of the
Eagle and t hit nix Hotel Company, on Satur
day Eveuing last, J. G. Me Whohtkr, was
chosen Chairman aud John Phinizi, Secretary
and Treasurer.
The Steam packet, Divid Urown, is expected
tt> resume her trips between Charleston and
New-Vofk, early this month.
When South-Carolina first talked of resistance
to the Laws, we piedicted that some good man,
as Mr Dkayton, would get her out of the
scrape, if she pushed matters too far, as Mr.
I'ohsyth once did Georgia. How does the mat
ter now stand 1 Who has relieved her from the
dilemma, in which her rashness had placed her?
It is true Drayton has uot all the credit of
the act, but be has been a prominent assistant.
Mr. Clat has stepped io, as once lefore, between
the two parties, and saved the country. It is
true, as Gov. Hamilton says, South-Carolina had
11 her lance couched, and not a feather quivering
in her plume but how long sbe would have
been in this position it is not necessary to say—
more than that it would have been but a very
short time ; but for the interposition of the kind
offices, which has prevented the sacrifice of the
Union on the altar of personal ambitiow.
MK. JDE Lamp’s BENEFIT.
Our readers will perceive at the foot of the
bill* that Mr. Dk Camp will take his benefit To
morrow Night. This appeal at the close, we
fear of a losing Theatrical Campaign, w ill not
be made in vain. No one, we are certain, Is
more zealous and untiring in his exertions to
please the public than our Manager. We will
not forget him on the last night of the season.
We fill the pockets of the “ Stars” with shinerr,
shall we not remember the Manager? He is
worth all the Stars in the Theatrical firmament,
but out his light—-and how will the “Stars”
shine 1 We cannot do without the Maitager.
If he should fail and run away,
VVe might lack plays another day.

The last Carolinian asserts that the Union
Party of South-Carolina have beets Secretly sup
plied with arm* from the Augusta Arsenal. This
assertion is first placed oil the authority of Mr.
Rumor, and then, “ A gentleman informed us
(the Carolinian), that one of the United States
officers admitltd to him, that drmshad been sent
into this Stale," (Si.&.y The Carolinian calls
on “those who can tell,” for the truth in this
matter. We fear the Carolinian would not like
the truth —it miget disappoint its purpdfe. The
wftoile story is false. We “ deny the charge” oc
tiie 1 bits* authority, and wait for any testimony,
which the Carolinian may think it possesses in
fhe.premises.
We deny his "charge,” solely became it is
itnlrue —not that we consider there was the least
impropriety, under the circumstances, of the
Union men supplying themselves with arms from.
any qua iter they could get thenfr. They had
been in part deprived, in an insidhms manner,
Os those, to which they had as perfect a right as
their opponents; and eteiy consideration of
prudence would justify tn'efr supplying them
selves with the means of self-defence. Whether
they have done so, it is niot our business to
but we know they have not tfeeifyeif them frdin
the “ Augusta Arsenal," probably because they
ftever applied. Since the eommenceipent of
those difficulties, which have »<» sharpened the
vision of the Nuliifiers, as to “ gee what is not
to be seen," we are authorized to say, that the
only removal of arms was a stand of musltefry
for one Company, sent from Charleston to the
Augusta Arsenal; in consequence of a General
Order for supplying triTe Army with brown mus
kets.
Among the recent deaths in England are those
of Lord Exmouth, Sir George Dallas, and the

It is with much pleasure that we observe in
the N 'Y. Daily Adv. of the 22d, a remark that
unusual activity prevails at some of the wharves
in that city, in shipping gcAtls for Charleston, it
having become the general impression that the

Cherokees t
**WASHfNfItToN CiTir, March ?4.
“Gentlemen —On Sunday last, the
Cherokee Delegation set out fur their
homes, without coming to any definite
terms with the Government.
1 aim apprehensive some of your own
representatives have endeavored to throw
obstacles in the way to a treaty, by repre
senting the Enforcing Bill as intended to
afford the Cheiokeutt .freedom from the
operations of State Laws, through the
Supreme Court. Some of the members
from your State will, no doubt, give this
as a material teaso'n for opposing that
law. The intelligent reader will, on ex
amining its provisions at once discover
that such a reason is given ad eaptandum
vulgus. This bill underwent mature con
sideration, as I am credibly informed, by
the cabioet, and cannot have tire slightest
bearing oo the claims ’he Cherokees
heretofore set. up, to form a separate, free
and independent ..Government wiihin the
limits of the States.
Messrs. Forsyth and Wayrtte have act
ed the part of patriots, and consistent
statesmen, and will receive, no doubt,
from their countrymen, evidences of in
creased confidence;, wbi-ts< others, who
have recently thrown off the mask that
shielded them but a short time from pub
lic scrutiny, on being viewed in their true
character, will cease to command either
the admiration, or respect, of your patri
otic citizens. On their return home last
summer, they tepresenied to the people,
that the Tariff Law of ’ 3 had become
the settled policy of the country, and p
was necessary, in order to be relieved
from its burthens, that “the torchlight of
the revolution, should be flashed across
tire political hemisphere.” Yet, notwith
stauding.the threats of disunion* by a com
paratively feeble party, which was rasher
calculated and perhaps intended, to re
tard, than facilitate reform, Congress
made a still further reduction during the
present session. Before the last election,
many of them professed to be the warm
est friends nf the present administration;
but, since their election is secured for the
next two yeais, they have, in the halls of
the national Legislature, announced to
the world, their abandonment, long since,
of that confidence and friendship, which
they had one? experienced towards him,
whoso influence a fid firmness were, of all
others, so necessary (o keep together and
strengthen the bonds uniting the adverse
interest* of the north and the south,”
