COTTON.
Oar Southern advices this week are of varied
character. Very little of a satisfactory nature
can be stated in regard to the growing crop,
and ns an intelligent correspondent justly ob
serves, “ It is doubtful if ever there was such
a conjunction of untoward circumstances as
there has been this year.” The cool and back
ward Spring prevented the Cotton from grow
ing off early, and tho incessant rains of April i
and May gave the grass a start, which has pre
vented planters from cleaning their crops in
time to give the Cotton a etianee to grow. In
fact, the per centage of injury by the May
rains and June grass, is much greater than was
at first estimated. It is becoming an every day
occurrence for planters to write, “My crop is
an entire failure;” concluding with “ i am ex
ceedingly anxious to sell my place and all on
it, etc.” in South Western Georgia intelligent
travellers unite in saying that the prospects
for Cotton throughout that fertile portion ot
the State are very poor, and that, in their opin
ion, not more than one-half of an ordinary
crop will l»e made. Late reports from Western
Texas describe the army worm as having made
it s appearance, and doing much injury in some
localities. In brief, notwithstanding-the best
lands have been devoted to the culture of the
Cotton crop, it is very backward and un
promising. The stands are defective and are
universally infested .with the heavy growth of
grass and weeds.
Under these circumstances it is but fair to
assume that the staple must advance in price,
and such is the conviction in the minds of
many Factors and strong holders, of the cer
tainty of a short crop, that they have with
drawn their samples from market. It is true
we have the counteracting influence against a
sudden rise—of the war in Europe and the
large stocks of Cotton in England, held, and
to arrive. But these are only temporary ob
structions to an ultimate advance in the prices
of Cotton.
From tlie Liverpool General Brokers’ Asso
ciation Prices Current, of the 15th lilt., we give
the following as the official figures of the
Cotton Brokers’ Association:
Estimated stock on hand to date. .1.039.950 bis.
Same time, 1805 353,820 bis.
Increase of imports compared with
same date last year 1.087,380 bis.
Increase in quantity taken for con
sumption . 224,480 bis.
Increase of Stock 680.130 bis.
Decrease in speculation 604*20 bis.

We will close our remarks with an extract
from Messrs. Bryce «fc Co.’s Circular, of New
York, dated June 29th. 1866. “Our market for
the week has been quiet, the views of buyers
and sellers being divergent. Although offerings
have been abundant but few lots have been
pressed for sals. A small lot of Orleans, grad
ing Fair to Fine, sold at 50 per lb.”
For the past week our (Augusta) market has
been extremely dull and unsettled, with a de
clining tendency. Few sales, however, have
been made, except as the result of peremptory
orders to sell. We quote:
