To our Friend* and the Pnblic
Generally*
The Daily Prks? Jjag.now been pub
lished about eight months, and its suc
cess has fully equalled the most san
guine expectations of its Proprietor; in
deed, it has become one ol the institutions
of our city, and, we are proud to know,
a favorite with all cl* as os of our citi
zens. It was at first but an experiment,
being published as a free circulating
paper, and many predicted that it could
not exist as such for any length of time.
Our experience has proved the revere*.
We can publish it indefinitely in its
present size and style, as a free paper,
because our merchants and business
men have learned its value as an adver
tising medium, and with the moderate
ness of its advertising rates, has caused
them to fully and liberally appreciate it-
But some of our warmest friends and
most liberal patrons have urged us to
make it a “subscription" paper, in order
that we might produce it in a style
more suitable to (he times and the re
quirements of the public, by enlacing
and otherwise improving it.
In accordance with this advice, we
propose, on the first of October next, at
tho opening of the business season, to
enlarge the Daily Prkss, by the addi
tion of several columns, and lengthen
ing them proportionately, so that the
addition will be equal to TWO PAGES
of the present size, or twelve of our pres
ent columns. We shall also publish the
latest telegraphic news; and devote more
particular attention, even than at pres
ent, to our editorial, general news, and
local columns—thus giving additional
interest to our jourual.
Greater facilities will also be fur
i
nished to our advertising patrons in the
increased space, latest styles of display
type, and all the advantages of modern
improvement. For all this we shall
charge only the moderate sum of Five
Dollars per Annum ; Three Dollars
for Six Months; and Two Dollars
for Three’Months.
This, we believe, will enable all who
desire to take a newspaper to do so, at
a trifling expense. They will get all
the latest news of the day, editorials on
leading subjects, interesting locals, and
miscellaneous reading matter generally,
in a neat journal, printed on large and
clear type. Anew press has been or
dered for this purpose, and is now on its
way "hither.
It is onr intention to mnlte the Daily
Press every way worthy of public pat-
worthy of the City of Au
gusta; and if our friends will only sus
tain us, as we have every reason to Be
lieve they will, we shall succeed in pre
senting them with such a paper, at a
price which will place it within the reach
of all of our citizens.
Our country friends should send in
their Subscriptions at once.

Tnß Labor Convention.—The Balti
more Labor Convention adopted resolu
tions that working rnen'should cut loose
from existing political psrties and or
ganize a National Labor Party, the ob
jects of which shall be to secure the
enactment of a law by Congress, and
the State Legislatures, making eight
hours a legal day’s work, and the elec
tion of men pledged'ttf sustain and rep
resent the interests of the industrial
classes.
Mobile census now bejng taken
is quite completed. It show* the popu
lation of Mobile to be upward of 50|000
souls. This ■is double the number of
persons that were to be found there,
before the war, at this season of the
year. • '
Sale of the Charleston A Savan

GRANITE
BAYnra.
The Radicals become more ferocious
as time advances, and, instead ol being
satisfied with the immense power which
they wield, they crave for more. All
the signs indicate that they are pre
paring to precipitate the country into
auother civil war. They denounce the
President in no measured terms, and
talk glibly of preparing * for another
revolntion.
Soitoe of them have become alarmed
at the action of the Philadelphia Con
vention, and now wish to call * Radical
Convention, which shall propose to ad
mit Southern Senators and Representa
tives into Congress without regard to
their antecedents, and withqut. the ap
plication ’or the odious test-oath. The
condition of these concessions will be
the right of suffrage for negroes on the
same terms as in the Northern States.
Perhaps, after all, amid the ravings
and howlings of the fanatics, some good
may come to the poor South yet; for,
“when rogues fall out, honest men often
come by their dues.”
Submarine Railway. —Genius is rest
less. From the accomplishment of
grand works, it moves onward to grander
triumphs. Now that, after a long time,
we have a submarine telegraph in per
fect working order, something still more
wonderful must needs be attempted.
There is n prospect of a railway be
tween England and France through a;
submarine tunnel. Borings are now
being made in the vicinity of Dover, and
between Calais and Boulogne, aod ex
plorations will soon be made in mid
channel. It is proposed to carry oir the
excavations of the tunnel from both ends
as well as shafts in the channel. At the
top of the shafts powerful steam engines
will be erected for pumping, for drawing
up the excavated material, etc., and for
supplying power to the machinery by
which the excavation will be effected.
The tunnels will communicate on the
French side with the Northern railway
to France, and on the English side with
the Southeastern and London, so that
there will be an unbroken line from
Paris to London.
A Substitute for Piddle Wheels.
The system of propelling vessels by
means of the reaction of water it being
extensively experimented upon in various
parts of the world, and is but the re
vival of a plan proposed many years
ago. It is said that by this process the
water is sucked in by means of force
pumps, and is then forced out in a
number of small streams at the sides
and stern of the vessel. These streams,
striking the water on which the vessel
floats, cause a sort of reaction which
propels the vessel. -Boats propelled in
this manner are in use in several parts
of Europe, one in particular being em
ployed as a ferry boat on the Clyde, in
Scotland. The system, however, although
long known, has never been very gene
rally adopted. The advocates of it
claim that by it vessels can attain a
much higher power with a less con.
sumption of coal than is possible with
paddles or screws ; that the steering is
easier and more certain, and that the
shakiug of the vessel caused by the
movements of the large engine, always
necessary (or a paddle wheel or screw
steamer, is avoided. In the new system
the force pumps for moving the water
get their power from several small
steam engines.
The Moral Market.—Tho following
report of the matters in the moral mar
ket has been made. Readers can decide
among themselves as to its correctness:
Honor—Scarce. Old stock exhausted
and the new will be a complete failure.
Virtue—Old growth nearly consumed.
Young growth—prospects very unprom
ising.
Honesty—None in market.
Patriotism—First quality scarce; none
to be disposed of. Second quality easily
bought on speculation at 100 per cent,
discount.
Prudence—All in the hands of old
stockholders;
Modesty—Stock badly damaged. None
for sale.-
Vice—Market overstocked.
- Pride—Market glutted.
Politeness—Cheap. Holders unwill
ing to dispose of stock at present rates.
Scandal—None at wholesale. Dealt
in chiefly by hawkers and peddlers at
JCetail.
Love—None offered except for
greenbacks.
■ ■ .
At Last.—Following close upon sun
downs, gipsies, and sailor’s caps, came
the redoubtable hat styled, “we don’t
know what," but whose shape dallies
between a butter dish and a sunflower.
And now—we have waited long to see
the like—the ladies are to wear
gentlemen’s cloth, with ornaments in
passementerie, gentlemen’s hats, with
gauze veils, and dog skin gloves. What
