MORNING NEWS.
[From tho Beaufort, S. C., Poet.]
A. largo and respectable meeting of the cit-
izons of the Parish of St. Helena, was conven
ed at the Town Hall in Beaufort, on Saturday
tho 6th iust; for the purpose of testifying in a
Huitablo manner, their sense of tho severe be
reavement which they have suffered,in the death
of tho lute lamented John Caldwell Calhoun;
On motion, Edmund Rhett Esq., was called
to the chair, and John M. Baker, Esq., by re
quest acted os Secretary
Tho Chairman then invited the attention of
those prosout to the consideration of the sub
ject which lmd called them together; and in
eo doing paid a just tribute to tho character of
tho deceased.
B. J. Johnson, Esq., then moved that aoom
nrtttca of five be appointed to prepare and
ubmit-a suitable Preamble and Resolutions
for tho consideration of the meeting ; and on
the adoption of the motion, tho chair appoint
ed on the committee tho following gentlemen.
B. J. Johnson, Capt. John Fripp, Henry M,
Stuart, Dr, John A. Scott and Joseph D. Pope,
Esq.
After an absence of a few moments, the
committee submttcd tho following Preamble
and Resolutions: t
Whilst the Nation has lost, yi John Calwell
Calhoun, a Statesman of unsurpassed ability
and integrity. South Carolina Mourns for him
« a bereaved parent, for her noblest and most J^.f> uythe
beloved child. In the whole of his exalted
career, she sympathised with approval and ad
miration ; but it wus in her hour of peril,
when her fortunes, and her honor, were at their
■extremost hazard, that she learned to know, to
esteem, and to love him, with a zeal and fidel
ity unequalcd iu tho history of any people.
He never failed her, and she never failed him !
Their hearts and minds moving in entire uni
son, his glory became her glory. This peculiar
identification of the State with tho man, as it
constituted the most striking characteristic of
their past connexion, now adds tho deoper
wain to their forced separation.
South Carolina counts it her highest pride—
not that she gave hirth to, nor oven that she
nurtured John C. Calhoun; but that she ap
preciated, elevated, and sustained him. In the
consciousness of possessing many sons wor
thy of honor, she suffered neither jealousy nor
obloquy to restrain her from pouring out the
full measure of her approbation with unwaver
ing adherence upon him, who, in tho noble
employment of powerful intellect in develop
ing the fundamental principles of political
truth, surpassed them all.. She thought it glo
rious to follow hard upon him, who followed
hard upon truth. For as the vehement desire
to discover and elucidate those elementary
principles in whicli truth iies hid, was the most
marked feature of the intellectual character
of him whom we mourn; so that intellect
with him took the place of passion, and whilst
others were swayed by impulse, the conceptions
of the understanding alone goyerned his will
But whilst Suudi Carolina mourns his death
sha, fiwls high consolation in the remembrance
Nautical Information.
Dover, Eng., Jan. 16.—“Tho musters of vessels
coming from the westward, and bound to the Thames
and Medway, are subject to heavy penalties If they do
not hoist the usual signal for a pilot on arriving off
Dutigcncss, and keep it displayed until the ship has
passed the South Buoy of tho Brake, unless in the
meantimo a duly qualified Cinque Ports pilot should
have come on board. Masters are particularly warn
ed to keep their jacks flying, although they may have
taken a boatman onboard, and engaged his boat ana
crew to procure a pilot from the shore. 1 he pilot
cutters snow a large gTccn light during tho night, ana
display a flare up every 16 minutes. ,
"N.B.—There arc now no licensed boatmen; their
licenses have been long since revoked, and the act a -
thorislng their being granted repealed. Maste
should ovoid being imposed upon by any persons pre
tending to have licenses. ..
“Masters should, on no account, pny the shipping
money to the boat’s crew, but in every cuse to t te
pilot only, or they will have to pay it twice. 1
has been decided In several caMjroy the judge of
County Court In Dover and Deal, that although tlu
boat’s crew may have received the shipping money,
or more, from the captain, it is still due to the pilot,
and from him to the boatmen.” . ,
Neuvitas, (Cuba) Feb. 8—Not having observed
any notice of a new Lighthouse recently’ erecoted
near tho entrance of this bay, I take the libel ty of
calling your attention to the tact, as it will be of great
importance to vessels sailing on the North side ot
the island. A couple of English vessels lately arriv
ed here, having no knowledge of such a work, were
much confused, one of them lying off and on ior .lb
hours, and that in the vicinity of one oi the most
dangerous reefs on the whole coast The Lighthouse
is built oh point Matemillos—long. 77 14, and lat.
21 40—of white limestone, and can easily be seen at
twenty mile distance. It is to be lighted tor the first
time, on the first of May. I believe it is the highest
in America, being 186 Spanish feet (or 171 Eng.) in
iieight, costing Eearly $200,000 when finished.
The lamp and machinery to be used are French, and
were exhibited at the late Fair in Paris. It is now
being placed by a French engineer. The whole struc
ture is under the superintendence of Don Juan Lom-
lazano, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Corps oi
Engineers. It is to be called ‘Colon,’ the name
being placed in large bronze letters, facing the sea,
about half-way up the tower, so as to be seen some
distance. The lighthouse will be of great utility to
in saving life and property. The reef ] tn own
le name of‘Ileal de los Catalanes’ , oun
.. fatal spot. It runs nearly North a o has
twelve miles, extending out in some places a i ea Bue
from tlife beach. In December, 1846, the New Q r .
leans ship Creole, from Bordeaux to the for mer
place, was lost here. The captain and more than f or .
i;y passengers perished. The same Winter the Sp.
brig Zedora, Hr. brigs Maid of Mona, Terpsichore
and Achiever, were all lost within a mile of where
the Creole struck. Point Matemillos is the starting
-lointfor veseels running down the channel. The
_angerous passage between Ginger and Wolf Keys
on tho hank, and Key Confines on the Ouhu Coast,
will not be feared any more, for as soon as this is
finished the Government commences another on Key
Confines, (o be similar in all respects to ting, on Mat-
temillos.—Cor. of the Herald.
Notice to Mariners.—The following list of lights
erected, or being erected on the Island of Cuba, for
whidb I am indebted to our Consul, Gen. Campbell,
at Havana, please insert, os it will bo useful for ship
masters.
