Nanticnl Information.
Dove*, Eno., Jan. 15.—“The masters of vessels
coming from the westward, and bound to the Thames
and Medway, are subject to heavy penalties if they do
not hoist the usual signal for a pilot on arriving oif
Dungeness, and keep it displayed until the ship has
passed the South Buoy of the Bruke, unless in the
meantime a duly qualified Cinque Ports pilot should
have coinc on board. Masters are particularly warn
ed to keep their jacks fly lug, although they may have
taken a boatman on hoard, and engaged liie boat and
crew to procure a pilot from the shore. The pilot
cutters shown large green light daring the night, and
display a Hare up every 15 minutes. .
“N. B.—There are now no licensed boatmen ; their
licenses have been long since revoked, slid the act au
thorising their being granted repealed. Masters
should avoid being imposed upon by nny persons pre
tending to have licenses. ^ i,.
“Masters should, on no account, pay the shipping
money to the boat’s crew, but in every case to me
pilot only, or they will have to pay it twice. A 1
lias been decided in several cases, by the judge ot t
County Court in Dover and Deal, that although tin.
boat’s crew may have received ™oney,
or more, from the captain, it is still due to the pilot,
and iVom him to the boatmen.” * an|tvni1
Neuvitas, (Cuba) Feb. 8.—Not having obsened
any notice of a new Lighthouse recently .•receted
near the entrance of this bay, I tnfo: the liberty nl
railing your attention to the lact, as it will be of great
importance to vessels soiling on the North side of
the island. A couple of English vessels lately arriv
ed here, having no knowledge of such a work, w ere
much confused, one of them lying otf and on tor .11)
hours, nnd that in the vicinity ot one of the most
dangerous reefs on the whole const. I he Lighthouse
is built on point Maternilios—long. 77 14, and .at.
HI 40 of white limestone, and can easily bo seen at
twenty mile distance. It is to he lighted for the first
time, on the first of May. I believe it is the highest
in America, being 186 Spanish feet (or 171 Eng.) ill
height, costing nearly $200,000 when finished.
The lamp nnd machinery to be used are French, nnd
were exhibited at the late Fair in Paris. It is now
being placed bv a French engineer. The whole struc
ture is under the superintendence of Don Juan Com-
pazano, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Corps of
Engineers. It is to be called ‘Colon,’ the name
being placed in large bronze letters, facing the sea,
about half-way up the tower, so as to be seen some
distance. The lighthouse will be of great utility to
mariners in saving life and property. The reef ^own
here by the name of ‘Real de los Catalunes' , een
a fatal spot. It runs nearly North a o 11Hfl
twelve miles, extending out in some places a ' ea Sue
from the beach. In December, 184b, the New Q r _
leans ship Creole, from Bordeaux to the f°r mer
place, was lost here. The captain and more than j or .
ty passengers perished. The same Winter the gp,
brig Zedora, Br. brigs Maid ot Mona, Terpsichore
and Achiever, were all lost within a mile of where
the Creole struck. Point Maternillos is the starting
point for veseels running down the channel. Tlih
dangerous passage between Ginger and Wolf Keys
on tha bank, ami Key Confinps on the Cuba Coast,
will not be feared any more, for as soon as this is
finished the Government commences another on Key
Confines, to be similar in all respects to this on Mut-
temillos.—Cor. of the Herald.
Notice to Mariners.—The following list of lights
erected, or being erected on the Island of Cuba, for
which I am indebted to our Consul, Gen. Camphell,
at Havana, please insert, as it will be useful for ship
masters.
