Returns, loirte persons names Lave been returned that are
not 21 years of age, and thus not liable to perlbnal tax,
such as it may concern will please to call at my office, and
their names ihall be erased from the lift of Defaulters.

u And be it further enabled, That the Receivers of
Tax Returns fliaii, in thirty days after publHhing the names’
of Defaulters, proceed to and ajjefs ail such Defaulters, in
_aTnm-equal, according to the belt of his opinion, to the full
amount of the tax of such Defaulters, which Aid alTtlTment
Ihall be deemed and held good against such Defaulters; And
the CdleßorlhAX proceed against such Defaulters for double
the amount of the fetid affeiiinent in manner pointed out bv
the faidTax Aclof 1797 for proceeding against Defaulters *
Provided that, if any Defaulter, so aflefled, Ihall, at any
time before the Collator fiiall levy for the fame, make re
turn, upon oath, before the Receiver, of his or her taxable
property, the laid airdfment Ihall be considered void, and
the Collector Ihall confider the returns as the proper charge
against such Defaulters.
* “ And be it further enacted , That every person or
persons refuiing or negleding to give in a lift of his, her, or
their taxable property, Ac. Ihall forfeit and pay, for every
such negled, the sum of one dollar for every free male a
bove the age of twenty-one years, and the sum of one dollar
for every Negro; the fiun of eighty cents on every hundred
dollars value of every lot, wharf; or other lands, &c.”
u And whereas divers persons, non residents of this state,
import large quaatitks of goods, wares, and mcrchaadife 3
(4 dollars per ann.)
and evade t!.c payment of taxes, by not being in the state
at the time uiuaHy preferibed lor making returns for taxes*
for remedy whereof,■ be it enabled, i’hat any non rciident,
who fliall expole to file any goods in this state, /hall, on
his arrival, or* within seven days after entering the fame,
make return on oath, to the Receiver of Taxable Returns,
and give security to the Fax C ilicdor to pay the fame on
or bes re the time preferibed for paying taxes inipol'ed by
this add.”
