Their swords are girl in virtue's cause,
Minerva’s sacred hill is free--
O! may she keep her equal laws,
While man shall live, anu lime shall lie.
The pride of all hershrines went down ;
The Goth, the Frank, the Turk,hud reft,
The laurel from her civic crown ;
Her helm by many a sword was cleft:
She lay among her ruins low—
Where grow the palm, the cypre-- ro«e,
And crush’d and bruis’d by many a blow,
She cowr’dbeneath her savage foes;
But now again she springs from earth,
Her loud, awakening trumpet speaks;
She rises in u brighter liirtii,
And sounds redemption to the Greeks.
It is the classic jubilee—
Their servile years have roll'd away ;
The clouds that hover'd o'er them flee,
They hail the dawn of freedom's day ;
From heaven the golden light descends,
The time of old are on the wing,
And glory there her pinion bends,
And beauty wakesn fairer spring;
The hills of Greece, her rocks, her vvuves,
Are all in triumph's pomp army'cl ;
A light that points their tyrant's graves,
Flays round each hold Athenian's blade.
The Parthenon, the sacred shrine,
Where wisdom held her pure abode :
The hill of Mars, where light divine
Proclaim'd the true, but unknown God ;
Where justice held unyielding sway,
And trampled all oorruption down,
And onward took her lofty way
To reach at truth's unfading crown :
The rock, where liberty was full,
Where eloquence her torrents roll'd,
And loud against the desp. t's rule,
A knell the patriot's fury toll'll;
The stage whereon the drama «pnke,
In tones, that seem'd (he words oflieav’n,
Which made the wretch in terror shake,
As by avenging furies drlv’n :
The groves ami gardens, where the fire
Of wisdom, as a fountain, burn'll,
Aad every eye, thatdar d aspire
To truth, has long in worship turn’d:
The halls and [torticoes, where trod
The moral sage, severe, unstain'd,
And where the intellectual god
In all the light of science reign'd ?
The schools, where rose in symmetry
The simple, hut majestic pile,
Where marble threw its roughness by,
To glow, to frown, to weep, to smile,
Where colors made the canvass live,
Where music roll’ll her Hood along.
And all the charms, that art can give,
Were blent with beauty, love and song:
The port from whose capacious womb
Her navies took their conquering road,
The In raids of an awful doom
To ait who would not kiss her rod ;
On these a dawn of glury springs,
These trophies of her brightest fume ;
Away the long-cliain’d city flings
Her weeds, hershackles, and her shame ;
Again her ancient souls awake,
Harmodius bnres anew his sword ;
Her sons in wrath their fetters break,
And freedom is their only lord.

The versatility of talent for which the

In England the, most fashionable and
highly relished enjoyment of the higher
classes, which has even found tin eulo
gist in one of the most eloquent English
statesmen, is a gladiatorial combat be
tween persons very exactly trained, and
vary carefully prepared to bruise each
other with (he utmost possible force, to
cut deep gushes in each other’s faces, and
to bent each other’s eyes with so much
vigor, as to occasion excessive swelling! |. n0

mangled at the leisure of his opponent
The gladiators are not considered as
having exhibited a considerable degree
of spirit and skill, unless they have so
crushed and beaten into an uniform mass
the different features of the face, that all
appearance of a human countenance is
as thoroughly extirpated, as all vestiges
of human feeling are, from the hearts of
the joyous spectators, whose delight is
in exact proportion to the number of
ribs broken, the amount of the disfigure
ment or destruction of the features, ami
the degree of exhaustion and sickness of
lhe actors in this amusing drama. The
spectators are rarely so fortunate as to
witness the dealing of the death blow.—
Hi is circumstance takes place much less
frequently upon the English arena, than
formerly upon the Roman. In this par
ticular, the ancients seem to have had
the advantage of the moderns; hut by
way of compensation, a fashion has lately
come out in Englandofexhihilinggludiu-
tors of the softer sex. Very interesting
accounts of a battle fought itt England
between two women, in which both par
ties were most scientifically and tho
roughly mangled, have lately appeared
in some English papers. Should this
custom become fairly established, a gla
diatorial combat in England will be as
abhorrent to all the vulgar, common
place feelings of painful pity, which ure
usually excited by the sight of a fellow
being in agony ns ever they could have
been by a similar work of destruction
upon a Roman stage.
A few years since, when Mr. Tligelow,
who was eminent as a lawyer, was Speaker
of the House of Representatives, of Mass.
Mr. S***** m , who kept a public house, re

ways particularly jealous ol lawyers. “ 1

corporation then pending before the House,)

been strictly legal ; and on the establish
ment of peace. Hook under the adtice
of Cowan, a lawyer of some distinction,
brought an notion of trespass against Mr.
Venable. Mr. Henry appeared for the
defendant, anil conducted the cause high
ly gratifying to his hearers, the unlucky
Hook always excepted. After lie be
came animated in (lie cause, he had the
most complete control over lite passions
of his audience ; at one time lie would
excite their indignation, and then ven
geance was visible in every countenance

relax and ridicule him, the whole audi
ence was in a roar of laughter, lie
painted the American army, exposed al
most naked to the rigor of a winter's sky,
and marking the frozen ground over
which they marched, with the blood
of their unshod feet;—“ Where is the

where is the man ? there he stands ; but

shortly after of the act complained of.—
He depicted the surrender in the most
glowing and brilliant colors of his un
rivalled eloquence ; the audience saw
before their eyes the humiliation and de
jection of the British, as they marched
out of their trenches ; they saw the tii-
umph that lighted up the face of every
patriot ; they heard the sounds of victo

as it rung and echoed through the Ameri
