I 1 IWIUllowing paragraph is worthy tho se
rious attention of the whole printing, quill-
driving fraternity. It is “ devoutly to bo
i wished" that tho oditor of tho Alleghany
Democrat, from which ills copied, will up
on second thoughts reverse the proscription
against the newspapers in the opposition.—
Wo do not speak for ourselves, wo intorforo
nut in political squabbles—when we can
avoid them—but it is worthy of considera
tion, whether thus leaving so groat a por
tion orhis humble collenguea in darkness,
as to early and interesting intelligence, may
not bo an offence to tho people—whether in
short, tho deprivation of so conspicuous a
luminary, as tho Alleghany Democrat, may
not cause the unhappy newspapers to "rush
madly from their spheres" and perish in in
extricable darkness and confusion. Here
is the article :—
We have frequent invitations, eniilr the
Democrat, from printers at a distance to
exchange papers. *In order to relieve u
number of the small frtj from the trouble,
and ourselves from the importunity, we have
to say that we will not exclmngo with a
paper, whoro tho Editor advocates Hurry

curtails a valuable and expensive article of
importation, and may yet become one of ox

have read, wo cannot of course judge. Of
the descriptive powers of tho author, the
following delineation of a southern jund

ThrSf.ason.—As far ns wo ran learn
from every quarter of our State, the season
is uupropitiouH to tho cotton crop, on ac
count of the defect in the seed, occasioned
it is supposed from the long period of wet
weather which occurred before tho Inst
crop was gathered in. A great part of what
has been planted has failed to come up.—
Since then a largo proportion of the plant
that lias made its appearance aboveground
has died from the cold nights ami dews
which we have experienced this spring.
This is no doubt harassing to our Plan
ters, whose anxiety is doubled by the line
price ofthe article at present. But we
would have them to recollect that half crops
at the price which cotton now commands is
equal to whole crops at 12 nr 15 cents.—
And it becomes a wise people to profit by
adversity as well as prosperity. Where
your cotton will not stand, plant corn ; it is
a generous plant, well adapted to our soil,
and indispensihle to our subsistenco and in
dependence. A well furnished granary will
give you a well stored smoke bouse, and un
overflowing dairy. With these you have
the comforts and necessaries of life ; and
when you create them within yourselves,
all that vour Cotton may bring, will bo
clear profit. If your Cotton stands badly,
keep clear of debt, one ofthe greatest tor
ments that ever tortured an honest mail, or
infested civil society. Let tin* present. pr<
