FOR THE OEOROIAN.
BARNEY BLINN—CONTINUED.
Oh it wa« a merry day I wnot),
An over was in the county rtovn.*
The girts and buy* were ilrWdso fine
And tho soldiers "all urrangod in line.
Tho long desired Fourth of July, at length
arrived, it was one of those balmy mornings
peculiar to ashatfowv, summer day, -subse
queut to un evening shower in Georgia.
Tho distantting-tong-dinglu-dong of the cow
bell; tho nensivo bleat of tlie parted calf, und
the young kid; were among the few sounds,
floating on thu soft air, that lulled the extern
aivo Fine Woods into listless quiet: even
Drummer, and Spy; Filer, and Scout { Bar-
noy’s wateliful, staunch and favorite hounds,
luy dozing beneath tho old mulberry tree, in
front of Ins snug log-house; and under its cool
shade, Polly stood, hitched to thu branching
horns of an old forester; the trophy of a long,
and fatiguing hunt.
Hero; there are no higlnvay-robbew, no
stinted, and disaffected populace, clamouring
ugnin9t exactions “corn laws” : nor a riotous
combination of weavers, “holding out for high
er wages” ; although murdered so frequently
bv thy muskets ami bayonets of the mercena
ries of a King, to keep’ them from rebellion.
Hero ; the sweet solitude, which wraps in
delightful stillness tlm flonumt bosom of the
Pineland; seems to shadow forth an amiable
tranquility over the tempers of those who in
habit it, and hold the turbulent passions in
weak subjection.
Here; is to be found tho Podonian Groves
of our Country ; if wo have no Mount Toma-
rus, or Dzoumurka to ascend, &• get a glimpse
ut futurity, through some Apollonian oracle :
wo have tho beautiful und romantic Oconee,
rising in lofty grandeur ; mingling its wooded
summit, with tho clouds, and wo need no Or
acle to foretell tho coming renown of our
country, nor predict the lmppy destiny of its
citizens; iftliey continue moral, industrious,
and frugal: feeling grateful to that ijowor
Supremo who has placed us in a climate, and
soil, to supply us, with all the essentials of
life, and many, very many luxuries: for hero
the Cane, and the Vine, may delight and re-
* fresh the palate of tho luxurious ; while the
Corn and the Colton plant will Iced «& clothe
us all.
Hero too alone, is to be traced, in tho pri
vate) walks of life, those bold lines of original
character, that shun the stecpled city, until
their nucossury wants force them into it, und
which will over elevate tho unbending spirit
oftho .Southern Ploughman, or Farmer, l»e-
yound tho control of foreign innovation, or tho
gaudy nothingness of Royalty,: Here, scatter
ed throughout these wide spread Pine Forests,
is to be seen, the feeble rear-guard of that
Band of Patriots, who rolled back tho stormy
wave of civil war, upon the rugged shores of
Europe.
Agreeable to previous njrnngcmcnt, Ned
Outlaw, thu first Lieutenant ol’Capluin Winn's
Company, assumed the commu ltd ; die Pious
mister Stillwater was to precede tho Declara
tion, by prayer, and squire Dodd otrered to
read that memorable instrument. An eleva
ted hill near the County Court House had
been chosen for tho spot were Captain Blinn
was to “hold forth” ; on account of a thick
grove of small Pines, and a rock-spring oftho
purest water, which buretod from tho glebe
hill side, and dribbled into a stream below,
that worked several grist mills, in hearing.
On the top of the hill, a rustic stage was
constructed ; und in front trunks of trees wore
placed in parrullel lines, flanking the stage on
cither side; and near the spring, a green pine
booth iinbowered tho long dinner table.
A numerous assemblage of Men, Women
and children, demonstrative of thu Patriotism
of citizens, sensible of the blessings, and priv
ileges secured to them oil this day, seemed
seriously disposed to perpetuate its celebra
tion to the last period of their existence.
It being understood that Captain Blinn was
on the way, and would soon be there, Lieu
tenant Outlaw by a sudden jerk, nourished
a dragoon sword out of its rusty seabburd,
and striding into the middle oftho road; call
ed out in a surprising audible voice; “Oh yes 1
oh yes! all you. who belongs, to Jvspin
jilinn's Kmnpne.turn out nil fuul in lino long
tliis fetich yer, to sulloot tha orrittnr ns hu
kums kros3 the branch yoml'-r—”. Ijcre
wa8acauso of stir and bustle in downright
earnest for them: Jitnmoy Raffle in si hop,
step and a jump, planted himself on the ex
treme right,.as thu “point of nnpui.” “Form
tho lino mighty quick yer I tell you,” bawled
Ned Outlaw “for yonder t-uins tho orrittur.”
In an instant all rushed forward und accom
plished something resembling a crcscnt.—
“♦Stepback thnr on tho rite, leastwise on the
left I should say ; for a buddy’s monstrous ap
to be put to a nonsplush, bout this yer rite an
left biznpss ; becaz my right is your left, an
your rite is my left.” This prodigious discov
ery evidently raised Lieutenant Outlaw so
much in the estimation oftho company, and
increased his own confidence, that he vocifer
ated in a most commanding tone, “propar
min to do aritp peurt motion—uttinshun !—
tenshun I say’all round tliar; and his small
black eyes twinkled with animation.
“ Well now I reckon you had as good not
be in sichaplagy hurry; for I’ve tangled my
spur into Gimme Rattle’s britches” muttered
Sergeant Spriggpis ; ami as lie extricated tho
unlucky spur, said “drotmoGim if you dent
look shnrp, i’ll give you a spriilling chug with
lny rifle hut—you kut sieli a terrible sight, of
covortious, a buddy kaint. keep you of on tliar
heels.”—“ Silence in the ranks—tenshun 1
way once more—fur I hunt no great pinion of
so much of the sumo thing”: and to their e-
tcmal praise he it said, they were ns erect ns
a Haplmg—“ sholder phirelocks,” screamed
the Lieutenant. “ Thaisr.ordin to ole Stew-

twinged if i’ll put phirn in my lock to please
any Slewbang, bceuz my rifle* lias a rail flint

for I'd as soon throw up my kummiswhn for
fiaggent as to do tlm thing wrong” : and by
a swing of his floot, he kicked Ins rifle butt
fioino (oct out of lino. “ Silence in the ranks
thar, or i'll be down pun some on you as
quick as a duck upon n juno-hug” snuiuled tlm
Lieutenant. “ Now tlmrs two to play at that
gumo Ned Outlaw, on I reckon it taint the
CMicHt job you iver umlertuck to jump on me,
tho’ Irio’H you’r reasonable sturdy” grumbled
Hob Sprigging whose Southom blood began
to bo u little curdled with that oftho snapping
turtle. ...
“ Pm sprizod Saggant Spriggings to hear
you grutnblo at sich a size, on sieli a cusiou”
was the mild rebuke of Lieut. Outlaw, who
had boon convinced by a moment's reflection
of Ids unfttshionablo preference to his old ac
quaintance Boron Stubon, and his unmilitary
und rash threat ;for he did not hear tho saucy
banter thrown out, by tho crabbed Sergeant;
or the warm temperament of thoOutlaws would
never have cooled down until sometime after
u desperato rencounter. “Some on you down
tliar, has your guns kross your sholder in place
of stuntindicular, rite up an down, bo sholder
arms;” and the Lieutenant exemplified the
motion with wonderful ^clat, by means of his
long dragoon hanger.
In tho mean while our orator rode up with
in u. few paces of thq right, when tho Lieuten
ant called out, make ready monstrous peart!
—take dod home!—phirc—pnm—snap—-bam
—fizo—powo—rattled gun after gun, until the
whole line was passed by tho orator, whose
mettlesome pony, floundered and patched,
dashed und snorted, to little or no purpose;
for Ramey Blinn was still on her, and sat as
stately in his saddle, as though he had grown
tlu ro; and when was ever a Georgian thrown
by his spirited nag, while she kept her feet, and
he iiis stirrups; like tho stout Duke of Water
loo.

taut changes about to be made in the Cabinet ut Wash
ington, on tho authority of tho National Journal—such
us tho retirement of Mr. Eaton fioinlhu Department of
War, Mr. Branch from that of tho Navy, &c.,-Hut our
regret is rather lessened by tho positive contradiction of
tlm Telegraph oftho same afternoon—sweeping away
the whole arrangement at a word. Tho oirorSs .of the
Journal to assist iu tlm hotter organization of tho ad
ministration, aro really treated by it with a neglect which
must bo mortifying^to a degree, to thoso wlia labor so
Indcfutigably and disinterestedly for its improvement—
That tho members oftho present Cabinet will neither
resign their ollices, nor atteud to its gentle admonitions,
must bo truly distressing, and deserves all tho sympa
thy wo have to spare for its editor or editors, if indeed
the number of them do not rcduco tho portion to bo shar
ed by each to so small as quantity os.to render it of no
value.
It was stated tho other day by tho same paper, that
Mr. Van Bubkn was at Richmond, of course for politi
cal purposes of his own. But tlm fact wc learn from the
Telegraph, Is, that except a short visit to mo Mr. Cah-
holi. and Mr. M’Lean, Mr. Van Buuen has not been
absent from the District of Columbia, sinco ho entered
his duty as Secretary of State, If some ingenious in
ventor would apply himself to the production of a win
nowing apparatus, by which thu truth might bo obtained
from any quantity of assertion in our warm partisan
prints, he would, if successful, confer an important ser
vice on tho reasonable of all parties, and deserve to be
immortalized by ail honest, and well meaning news
mongers in search of truth, a« we profess to bo,
After Mahmoud, tho Turk, who between ourselves
and the reader, has lost a large portion of our goodopin-

self to bo trculcd by Diebitsch und his Cousacks, Sam
Patch is without doubt, the Lion‘of the Day. By a semi
official account of thu lato celebration at Niagara, our
hero was there, andas usual “covered himself with glo

twenty-fivo feet high, at the foot of tho pfeoipico below
Goat Island. Soma delay oceurre J in consequence of
an accident to a chain, during a part of which, the crowd
were exposed to a pitiless ntcrniofr iin ; but in due time,
Sam was on ti e spot, and leaped “all accoutred as he
was” in a white dress, into the boiling and hobbling ba
sin below*. There it appears hu ducked and dived and
dived and ducked, until it was actually feared 1io had
gone to join the shade ofMorgan, in the post-ash kettle
which it is said, it navigates the Rapids and Falls ;
hut after a sufficient time spent in these marine gym
nastics, buffeting the waves w ith lusty sinews, tho victo
rious Patch returned .triumphantly to tho shore where ho
was received hy huzzas and shout*, almost rivalling the
thunder # of old Niagara. Although tho grand blow
up of part of Table UiN:k, wua not carried into effect,
rtome other explosions were made for the benefit of the
sight-seekers, the noise of which, compared to that of
the Full, appears tu have been like the explosion of an
India cracker hy the side of a park of forty-two pound
ers—and the bedraggled zpcfta.orr returned tu t\vir
homes very touch of the «-pii.i->n that try had bom, uid»

The late foreign iicwh has hud tlm effect to depress
the prices of Wheat and Flour, both in tho New York
and Baltimore markets. In Baltimore, wheat on the
i-llli was at $1,05 a 1,08 per bushel, and although thu
supplies were quito limited, the market was dull ut these
rates. In New York on thu 13th the price of Flour
was depressed to $51-2.
Tlm copy of an otlieiul decree is published in tho
Washington Telegraph, hy which it appears that, tho
National Treasury of Peru, being enable to meet its or
dinary domestic expenditures, and being deeply involved
for arrears of tho sime, ‘‘ tho prohibitory law of the
11th Juno of last year, respecting importations of foreign
merchandise, subject to tho payment sf 90 per cent,
and others therein mentioned, is suspended, it not hav
ing been productive oftho dosirablo cuds which had in
duced Congress to sanction tho same.”
The opening oftho Chesapeake and Delaware Canal,
was to h&vo been celebrated at the Canal, on Saturday
last. A proccsssion of vessels was to leave Dela
ware City at 10 o’clock, A. M., proceed to the Chesa
peake through thu western outlet Locks, and return
again to the city. The public was invited to join in
thu celcbrnlion. A great concourse of pooplu, andu
largo iiumbur of voxels aud boats, were expected to givo
interest to the cercmuiiy. - <
From Cvracoa.—-Wo are indebted to
Copt. Bourne, oftho ship Douglas, for Cura-
coa papers to the 19th September. .A letter
from Panama, which wo presume expresses
the feelings of an individual rather than the
community, says,—
“Wo have presses, types, and paper-—to

dom, properly, and life being in danger—the
political inquisition revenges more and worse
than it did under tho Spaniards!! Tho in
habitants of this Isthmus arc all wishing to
shake otf the yoke of oppression, and cease
to bo the slaves of Bolivar and his servile sol
diers. Many and many ties bind tho Pana-
mcniami to Jamaica aud to Euglund, while
none, none at all to tho present Colombia—
they all wish to their heart to becomb English
colonists, or protegees*. I la! dear Sir, if you
could only ascertain, through your valuable
papor, the opinion of your Government, and
encourage them in their warm wishes, you
would rccoivo immortal gratitudo fro: • tho
Panamanians, and would render great service
indeed to your Country, and in particular to

of view—only show yourself disposed, abun

From IIam nun an.Pavers, translated for

advices of travellers and private letters from
tho provinces of the interior of Russia, that
the forces of this large empire are still more
developed sinco tho return oftho Emperor.
The roads leading to tho Dnieper are cov

great, and the columns mostly march during
the night and rest during tho day: each co

By all advices, the Russians consider this

Constantinople, Aug. 1st.—A new frigate

Suicide.—New York, Oct. 13.—A coro
ner’s inquest was hold on Snturduy in the
Bridewell, upon the body of Eliza Tripler,
tho woman who was on Sunday lust charged
with having entered a house in Second street
and stolen $400.
Two slips of paper were, after her death,
found in her bosom, on ono of which the fol
lowing words wore written. “ My dear sis
ter, pardon my rash deed ; it is to spare you
ail from disgrace. I entrust my children to
your care, and I hope you will bo a mother to
the babe.” Upon tho other was expressed a
wish that soma money which she owed for
sewing should he paid, and a hope tlmt her
husband would receive 8 or $10 from a per
son whom she named.
It appeared in evidence that she was ac
customed to use laudanum as a stimulant, and
lmd it brought to her two or tiiren times by a
black woman, employed about the bridewell
in white washing and other like services ; it
appears that this woman brought in 15 cents
worth at two different times.
One oftho witnesses swore I hat the deceas
ed told her in conversation a few days since,
tlmt she would rather put an end to hereof
than go before tho court; this witness also
swore to having seen her write upon ono of
the slips of paper produced.
Tho exact titno at tylrich she took tho laud
anum, could not bo ascertained; the feinnlo
who slept in the bed next Iter’s on awakening
about 5 or (I o’clock, A. M. found her arm
cold aud lying across her face, and immed
iately made an alarm. Dr. Smith was sent
for, and tried different remedies for her re
covery, but without effect.; she lived until
about 8 o’clock, A. M. but never spoke from
the time her illness was discovered. •
The physicians who examined tho body,
testified that her death was caused hy laud
anum.
Thu Jury accordingly returned a verdict of
suicide.
Wc understand that a small difference of
opinion, us to the exercise oftho power of re
moval or appointment in tho clerkships oftho
offices subordinate to tho different Heads of
Departments oftho General Government, lma
resulted in an inquiry ns to the cuuso of the
romovul, which was announced some days
since, of Mr. W. Steuben Smith from the
Second Comptroller’s (Mr. Hill’s) Office, in
winch ho hud boon employed by Mr. Craw
ford, nt that time (1822) Secretary of tho
Treasury. Wo understand, (briber, that tho
President of Uto United States, being satisfied
that thcro wus no official cause for removal,
and altogether unapprised of such a step be
ing in contemplation, has given directions, to
obviuto any obstruction to that official harmo
ny which should prevail throughout the Go
vernment, tlmt Mr. Smith ho assigned to dtu
ty in another office of (ho Treasury Dopart-
ntont, which will ho quite as ngreoublo us that
from which tut attempt was made to remove
him Nat. Intelligencer.
