We can readily appreciate the dieinclinatit n
of the Republican to touch what It Is pleased

however, does not deny the charges contained

The spirit, which prevailed in the late Mas
sachusetts Democratic State Convention, is tho
spirit of nationality, and uuion, which should
strike the respousivc chord of sympathy iu
every patriotic heart The groat principle, de
veloped in their speeches and enshrined in their
resolutions, is that of tho co-equal sovereignty
aud co-equal rights ot the several States as
members of a Confederated Republic and a
National Union.
Without farther preface, tho subjoined verses
are placed at your disposal, ns claiming no high
er place than the corner of a newspaper, and no
higher mluistrelsy than Hint of the Ruclmnan
Glee Clubs, which may deem them worthy of
acceptance.

A Youmj Lady Shot in Baltuiouk.—A
young lady, about sixteen years of age, was
shot and du-tiguml for life, on Fremont street
beetweuu Columbia street and Elbow Lane, ou
Friday eveiug. She was standing quietly upon
the sidewalk, when a rowdy stepped from the
ranks of the Culitliiitnpuiii Club, aud delibera
tely discharged a horse pistol on a direct line
with her face, the powder from which all
lodged upon her cheeks. She presented an
awtul sight. She was immediately taken to her
resldeuec, on South Puca street, where she was
attnndud by a physician. It is feared that sho
will lose the sight of both eyes.
Tiib Storm and Rain.—Acoouuts reach us
from all quarters of tho disastriuus ullects of
the lato storm uud ruin. So far as wo are con
cerned, the storm was much moro severe and
tlie damuge much greater West than East or
Tallahassee. Gadsden county for example suffer-
edmucli more than Leon and Leon from all we
learn more than Jeiferson or Madison. The
southern uud especially the South Western coun
ties of Georgia und Albnmaasuffered more than
either. All that region of country about Co
lumbus Gu. and Montgomery Ala.,was severely
injured on many plantations the estimate is

Tub Drouth.—-Contrary to all expectations
the drouth still continues. For four long months
we have been without anyting like a genuine
seasonal do rain. Vegetation generally is fast
approaching “the sere and yellow leat,” whilst
the stock rouges in many places are litterally
parched, Intuit up. In some of the adjoining
counties even to tho forest trees, we are told,
are dying out. In alt of Western Texas the
effects of the present unprecedented drouth
is seriously ielt, and unless the fall rains should
set in very soon there cannot possibly be u
slfiueiont supply of grass to sustain the stock
through thu upprncliing winter, lu such uu
event the loss to thu people of Western Texas

deed, they aro so populous that (so the story
