Although the Monlteur Inu not announced
It, there is no doubt that tho Emperor Napo
leon has sent tho Grand Cordon to Marshal
O'Donuell—an not which I should think is not
likely to causes very favorable Impression in
England. It eaunot be accepted otherwise
than as n testimony of the Imperial upproval
of oil tho Spanish Minister's recent acts, and
as confirmation of the bet that the coup d'tlai
was Instigated by tho French government.
Then an rnmon afloat hen upon tho siibject,
not all of them very faPonble to the entente

Spain has always been a perilous shoal in
the course of amity between England and
France. It would, indeed, be a thousand!)!,
ties If aho wen again to causo a wreck. Tiro
friends of this government talk rather largely
and loosely about tho necessity of maintaining
Enoch Influence paramount in Spain, about
tho Impoashlllty of allowing the aproad of aucb
democtatlc principles as was witnessed under
tho government or Espsrtero, and about tho
■ services rendered by O’Donnell In riddhim tho
country of t horde of anarchists. There lsno
greater mistake than to suppose that French
Influence can be Imposed upon Spain, although
it may upon its government. As to the spread
of democracy, nothing will so effectually
Increase It as the attempted restoration of al>
•oluttun.
The reactionary measures of O'Donnell, his
kischery to tbe oonatlto tlonsl cause end to the
giant liberal party In whose ruin he two
years ago wa»«o eager to ho enrolled, have
dons more than any other man has ever done
la Spain to damage the monarchy and swell
the ranks of the democrats. And so It will
prove some day or other. No matter what
msaas O'Donnell and his successors may employ
to atnngthen and maintain a government which
Is to lie virtually absolute, they may Instil one
which may last far years, but sooner or later Jersey the
the reaction wUl come and then the throuoof hostility to
bahdblL,which tottered lathe ymr 1861;
will very probably lie completely swept away.

“Than let ns aU prepare for the fonenJ; for the

There will be ssmethlng of an equinoctial
breeso on the tth ot November} hut we do nut
look for hurricanes or earthquakes.
We heard it asserted tbe other day by one of
tbe “F. F. Vs" that fa theeventof Fremont's
election, not a man in Virginia could be found
willing to accept an office under bint. To which
a wag replied that he should, want no better
proepect oft fortune Ihnn the privilege of tax
ing overy man a sixpence a bend, who would
cross the Potomao bridge from thy OldDomi

under Fremont.”
We have said that Fremont's supporters feel
that Southern submission fa bis rale will he de
gradation. And It Is because they feel so, not
lets than because they desire the “loaves end
fishes” or the treasury that they are moving, or
attempting to move heaven and earth and hell
to accomplish bis election,They aro ourentmlea,
and woollglnt their vengeance byavtctory and

those whom they assailed, than the Seward/
Banka and Greely horde, who propose to come
-into power with Fremont are enemies to the
Sooth.
We do not say that such arc the feelings of
all the Northern people—only if a majority of
them. As far as we are advised, tho sentiments
of the Northern friends of Bucbauau towatda
the South are those which both sections cherish
ed towards each other fa the eerller and better
days of the Republic. They ato willing to
■bide by the compact made between their
fathers tnd oars. They are content
take the constitution as It ci-mc fcttli Hern the
hands of its framers. They concede that Ibe
claim of the Southern States to an equality of
rights and privileges with tbe Northern la
valid. Though not the advocates of the ex-
tension of Slavery, they are the advocates of
Stale Bights and popular sovereignly—hence
tbe sapportes of the doctrine of “non hitmen.

the Northern Democrats—and were it a qoea-
tlon of Union with Mint,we ceold exclaim from
onr hearts rsfo pirpitua 1 may It last forever 1
Nor let ns do injustice to the Northern
friends of Fillmore. In ns for os they have
gone Into an alliance with the Black Repnbfi*
cans—aa Is Rid cose fa Pennsylvania, Indians,
New Jersey, and some other States—they can
be no more fovonUy regarded thin their a|jlfs.
Yet there are some, many of them, inimical as
they may be to slavery, who would not over
ride the Constltotlon to small it. With each
men asfind tn appropriate organ fa the New
York Commercial, tho Boston Courier, and thl
Buffalo Advertlier, (Judging from n single arti
cle) the Southern people might live fa pence
and honor—differing fa many points, yet nocee-
esarlly making no greater sacrifice of opinion
than did the people of Georgia and Msssaehn-
setta when they consented to come into the
same Union, under a common constitution.
But neither ths friends of Buchanan nor tho
Irisnds of Fillmore, nor both, are likely to com
tool the legislation df the North, ud to express
her sentiments fa tho notion of Congress. That
legislation Is passing Into the hands of our un
disguised enemies. The national Executive tnd
the national Congrctn fa the event ufFremont’a

that of bitter, malignant, Insulting hostility to
ns and oars.
Now tr asked what will ths South do in the

Capt. Imwe, who had a small company al —
point, apprehending an attack rrom a large
force, prevailed upon Capt. Robertson to re,
main with his company and protect the place,
though It waa the aeslre »f Capt. R. to proceed
to Lecompton, that being the place for which
he waa destined. On Satufdby morning, about
ten o'clock. Col. Harvey made Ids appearance
with about one hundred and fiReen men and
demanded an unconditional surrender. Cut.
Lowe returned an answer not exactly suitable
—an-empbntlc negative. Colonel Harvey com
menced firing on the receipt or the answer, and
continuing the engagement for threo hoars,
when be drew otThls men for ths purpose of
procuring a cannon.
Seven of eight of tho abolitionists were kill-,
ed and wounded, although there were several
narrow escapes. Seven of our men made a rally
for the purpose of drawing the enemy nearer to
our men, while the nbolithmlsts were beyond the
range or onr gons. Mr.C.G. Newell wore of
this party, and lurvlng a ’Sharpe's; rifle, he

—tbe two former being about a quarter ot&
mile apart. Lteat. Randolph with Ufteenmeu
we e stationed in the blacksmith shop, an open
log building, and Captain Robertson with the
remainder of the company held the hotel, while
Capt Lowe’s men occupied the store.
The cannon wks directedsgxhist the black
smith shop, and consequently the hottest of the
fight was in that quarter. The first fire was
the only one that was productive of muterial
iojuy. It atrnck a musket In the hands of Mr.

fired they woold lay flat on tbe ground. In
this position f.they • sustained the >nre of lire
hours nu<l a half, without any one receiving
any Iqjury of consequence. They would shoot
at the enemy between the fires of the cannon,
and whenever one came within gunshot he wa*
ante to feel the effects of a fall. The cannon
balls danced over the heads of our men, cutting
op all manner of capers.
Mr. Westbrook and another person had the
skin scraped off thalr backs by tne balls as they
passed over them, numerouaslight wounds were
inflicted by splinters and fragments of rock
from the forge.
Finding they could occompllsh nothing with
their cannon, tho abolitionists attempted their
wyonte game of wheeling up a load of hay,
which they succeeded in pulling within seventy
fiveyardsof thei&op, but by this time our
men commenced tickling their legs so sharply
that they were glad to dauce a retreat, with a
ball in too calf of ono man’s leg und ono in the
thigh of another. This falling, they then, short
ly afterwards, sent to » white flag.
At the hotel the most unfortunate accident
occurred. It waa here tbat Copt. Robertson WM
shot through the thigh, and Onarles U. Newhail
tail mortally wounded, though both men were
■hot while ootalde of the house. Thecannonwaa
also discharged against tho house for a short
time, and a warm fire was continually kept up
by the occupants during tho entire action.

[Correspondence of tbe Dispatch.]
Cincinnati, Sept. 25.
I attended tho first Free*Soll meeting I was
ever at on Tuesday ulght last. The speakers
were quite as violent and tbelr language en
tirely as scandalous as reports have represent
ted those supporting Fremont to be. One of
those I beard, a Mr. Lee, of Tiffin county, in
this State, said:
. •‘The Sotith may talk or Disunion as much as
it pleases; but if tho Southern people act upon
any such notion, there will beat the headof
this Government, on the 4th of March next,
one John Chariot Fremont, who will dissolve
them—if they continue to treublo the earth, he
will r d the earth, of them by hanging them
betn^en beaten and earth.”’ ' ns
This Sentiment, which is a pretty tair spe
cimen of the-whole speech, was- roclferonsly
applauded.
Tlio Ohio is lower than it over has been be
fore for fifty Tears. Business, therefore, is
much stagnated. w.
