between two tralna on the Virginia Central
Road laat Thursday near Gordonsville. Though
there were a large number of white persona on
board no one of that complexion waa hurt, live
negro men were badly Injured. Three of them
bad their legs broken, another had hla leg and
foot crushed, and the flfth had hla jaw bone
broken, bat none of them were killed.

ty to test their power and capabilities. This
week, however, being fovorably for the pur
pose, a trial has been made, without any extra
elbrt to gain great results, nnduta moderate
speed.

A lorritory Comprised within tbu following
limits shall lie- set apart for the Mosquito I u-
dlaiis. And thin it goes oh to establish tho
bonndary. The boundary Is to ho deslguuted
and marked by two oommlaslonom, to lie up-
minted, ouobyher Hritaulo MnJosty, and one
ly tho President of the republic of Niuuragiro.
Hy article third, the Moequlto Indians, con-
fining themselvea within the territories desig
nated, shall enjoy the right to make, hy their
national couuoii or oouuolis, and to convey into
efibet all such laws as they may deem news-
aarylortho government and protection or nil
persons within tbo ramo, and or all projierty
therein bolongiug to their people, or to such
persoua us bavo conueoted themselves with
thorn. Their rights of property aud of local
government within the territory detlued shall
bo recognized, affirmed aud giorniiitced by
republic of Nioamgua, in treaties to bo made
by tbut state with the United States and Great
Britain respectively; aud the republic or Nicar
agua, in each of these treaties, shall stipulate
and engage that it shkU enact laws to prevent
the purchase of Isnds from the Mosquito In
diana, and the introduction and Bale of liquors
among tho said Indiana; and tha said republic
ahall protect them from all inroads, intrusions
or aggressions along their western nnd northern
frontier. Tho Mosquito Indians shall rathe
able to cede tboir territory or rights to any
other state without the consent ortho United
States uud Greet Britain, each separately ex
pressed -, it being, however, understood that
nothing shall prcoluno tho conclusion of such
voluntary compact and arrangement betweeu
the republic of Nicaragua and the Mosquito In
diana by which tho latter may be incorporated
S d united with the former; but it shall ho
puiatediu aUoh ease, that tho lin'd Mosquito
Indians shall enjoy tho same rights, and be lia
ble to tho same duties, as other citizens of the
said republic of Nicaragua.
By article four, all or tho territory south of
tho river Warcoo, or Segovia, not lucludeil
within the lbnlta of the roservatlou set apart
for the Mosquito Indians, shall, without preju
dice to tho rights or the llopublle of Honduras,
or to any question of boundary between that
Republic and the Republlo of Nicaragua, be
recognised nnd declared to bo within tho limits
and sovereignty of the Republic of Nicaragua,
on the fallowing conditions: Tho Republic of
Costa Rica shall retain for its citizens tho free
dom of navigation up nnd down the Ban Juan,
rrom its month to the mouth of tho Bcra l'iqiio
river, with liberty to enter and quit the port of
Ban Juan, or Greytown, with their vessels, aud
to store their cargoes in that pert, and without
being subject to any duties or Import nr export,
tonnage duty, or other tax or public cliargo
whatever, except for light money and other
necessary port charges. Tholiepnblics of Nic
aragua and Coats Rica shaU aUow the territo
rial disputes between them, and the limits or
extension to be given to the town of San Juan,
or Greytown, if the same cannot bo amicably
adjusted between themselves and that town, to
be nettled by the arbitration of tbe United
States and Great Britain, who, in any doubtful
point, aball bo able to call for tbe decialon of u
third party. All bona fid. granta'of laud for
dne consideration made in the name and by tho
be confirmed, provided the same shall not ex
ceed in any case tbe extent of ora hundred
yerds square, If within the limits of Ban Juan,
or Greytown, or one league square if without
the Bamc; and provided that such grant shall
not Interfere with other legal grants mado pre
viously to that date by Spain, the Republic of
Central America, or elthat of thepresent States
of Booth America; provided Ibrther, that no
such grant within cither of the said States
shall Include territory reserved by its govern
ment for forts, arsenals, or other public build
ings. This stipulation is in no manner lo effect
tho grants of land made previously to January

present condition shall not Interfere with or
prevent the levy of a temporary doty on im

tary service, except for the defence of the city
and within the bounds of tho same.
Article filth provides (hat the republic of
Nicaragua ahall enter lute positive treaty stipu
lations with each of the two government-, of
the United Btates of America and Great Britain
that it will make the grant or freedom to the
cttyofGreytown,orSanJuan, subject to tho
condition that tho municipality or the said city
shall, as soon as organized, pats laws and ordi
nances levying by tax or duty on importssome
reasonable sum to bo paid half yearly te the
Mosquito Indiana by way or annuity fora limit
ed period, as an indemnity and compensation
for their Interest in the territory recognised aud
declared by the first elansoof articled to be
within the limits and sovereignty of tho repub
llo of Nicaragua.
B/article sixth her Britannic Majesty and
the republic of Nicaragua ahafi, within six
months after tho exchange of the ratifications
of the treaty to be concluded between them in
virtue of tbe present arrangements, uppoint
each n commissioner for tho purpose of desig
nating and marking out the Inland boundary
separating tho territory to bo set apart for the
Mosquito Indians. They shuU also appoint
each a commissioner for tho purpose of decid
ing upou the bona tides of all grants of lands;

period of duration, and the time, place and
mode of payment of the annuity to bo paid to
the Mosquito Indians according to the stipula
tions.
Articlo seventh provides that the commis-
sioners shall meet stanch place or places as
shall be hereafter fixed. After they shall be
respectively named, and before proceeding to
business, they Bhall make ana subscribe a
solemn declaration that they will impartially
andoarolhlly examine and decide upon all tbe
mattera referred to them for their decision.
Tbe commissioners to appoint a third person
lo act as arbitrator or umpire in any case or
cases in wbioh they may themselves dlflbr in
opinion.
Article ninth provides that the two govern
ments bind themselves, in case the republics
of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, or either or them,
should refose to aceept the arrangements con
tained in the proceeding article, not to pro
pose nor consent to any ether arrangements
more favorable to the refusing party or parties.

teen acres. wither view of extending the cul
ture of this plant It hos, since its introduc
tion into this country, proved itself well adapt*
ed to our geographical range of Indian Corn.
It is of easy cultivation, being similar to that
of maize of broom coru, but will prosper in a
much poorer soil. A correspondent writing to
the commissioner, speaks of the extraordinery
richness and delicious flavor of the milk or cows
which had been fed on flint description of
food.
Several gentleman have likewise recently ae*
quainted the office with the fact of the success
of the Liquorice Plant, which is hardly as far
North as Connecticut. It is employed not only
for medicinal purposes, butts au important
element, they say, in preparing some of the
best ale and porter in Great Britain

the^negroea belonging to the estate of Alexan
der Moore, deceased, of Halifax county, shows
that the prices were .almost unprecedentedly
high. One man, aged 22 years, brought $1,466;
another one. of tbe same age, $1,425; one 20
years old, $1,488; a girl, 17 years old, sold for
$1,260; a boy* 9 years old, $900; one 10 years
of age, $980. The number sold was forty*alx,
varying in age from 4 to 75years. Tbe sum of
the sales was $32,324, making an average of

bany Statesman says :
"The New York Central Railroad Company

tre.—The Boston llee states that two colored
men numed Julian S. McCrea and John Bte*

complainants to test tho question of color in
its relation to places of public amusemeut at

From Wukatland.--We have a few items
ofinformation from Wheatland, on which, we

Frst Mr. Buchanan has us yet invited no one
to become a member of ids Cabinet, aud has
not nude up his mind with reference to single
member of it.
Second. Mr. John Appleton, of Maine, is to
bo the editor of the Washington Union.
Third. Mr. Buchanan is uu earnest advocate
of the election of John W. Forney, Esq., to the
Senate of the United States.
Fourth. Ho will leave Wheatland for this city
shortly before the 1st of February.
An Important Decision.—On tho 23d iu-
stunt the Circuit Court for this District decided
an important legal question, so far us the In*
tercsts of tho Government ure concerned. The
United States sued Selpon, Withers & Co. for

claimed that uuder au old statute they have
priority over any other creditor* in a case of
insolvency, and the Court so decided. Tbe de-
poaitesiu question were made by the Indian

rio.—Oswego. Dec. 24.—The Bchooner laonnox,
which left Kingston three weeks since for
Toronto, has not since been heard of, and all
hopes of her safety are abandoned. In addition
to her own crew of seven men, she had on
board five sailors belonging to the schooner
Locblel, who were working their passage to
Toronto. All are supposed to be lost.
The Tennessee Insurrection—Neu roes
Executed.—Louisville, Dec. 24.—The Hop kin
son (Tenn.) Mercury rays that Ned Jones, tho
celebrated negro preacher here, has been put in
jail by the Vigilance Committee. The free no-
S o preacher, Sol. Yoang, was hung at Cadiz,
y,, on Tuesday, and another was) hung at
Pembroke on Wednesday last.
Tbe Kansas Emigration, Ac.—8h Loafa,
Dec. 24.—A letter from Westport. In the St.
Louis Republican, says that Col. Buford pub
lishes & statement showing his loss in the South*
era emigrant enterprise to be upwards of
$10,000.
It is feared that the mails across the plains
have been greatly delayed by the deep snow

The House committee on naval affairs have
concluded their report of tho bill for the amend*
atory act to promote the efficiency of the navy

A delegation of Kaw Indians, from Kansas,
has arrived, but being without on interpreter
were unable to make their business known to
the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

Navigation Suspended.—Pittsburg, Dec
23.—The severe weather of last night has frozen
tho Ohio, and completely closed the navigation.
This evening the weather appears to be moder
ating, though still cold.
Steamer Sunk.—Cincinnati, Dec. 24.—The
steamer Altamont was sunk at Marietta yester
day. The cargo wlllprobably bo saved In a
damaged condition. Tho boat is a total loss.
New Orleans, Dec. 24.—The news from
New York in relation to Gen. Walker has caused
considerable excitement Tbe steamer of the
26th will probably take out a largo number of
raorulta.
