We mentioned two (toys ago tbs escape of I. A.
McLaughlin, the defaulting money order clerk,
This morning we announce his capture and return
to the otty.
It seems that, after eluding the bailiff who had
charge of him. he made hi* way out of town by way
of Marietta street, and went toward Marietta afoot,
probably aiming to take the train at acme point where
not likely to run much risk of being detected
Wednesday morning Mr. A. C. Helftey was exer-
cising a puree asms distance this ride of Marietta,
whan McLaughlin came uy. Helgbey reoogniaed
him and spoke to him. The latter told Heigboy he
bad gotten off the train at Vlnlng’s to see e friend,
but failed to And him end was then walking to Ma
going towards Marietta. At this time Heig
bay was not aware ttrA McLaughlin had escaped and
that a reward was oflhred for his apprehension.
After arriving at Mi Hilts, Helgbey went to
•'Chuck” Anderson’s livery stable and there made
some remark about having seen McLaughlin,
was than shown a copy of the Sun, iu which appear
ed theeArarttaemeutofM^JorSmyth, offering art-
nerd for the culprit.
Shortly after noon Helgbey and Anderaon mount-'
ed their horses end concluded they would go out and
make three hundred dollars. They oonjectured that
McLaughlin would avoid Marietta and strike the
railroad again some distance above. Accordingly
they struck out for Green's station, some seven miles
up the road, and then separated to beat about for the
game. II was not long before Helgbey aw him
dart into some bushes. Biding to the bushes
Bu commanded McLaughlin to come out Not
being obeyed, he cooked his pistol and dashed In
demanding a surrender. McLaughlin threw up his
mder." He told Helgbey
that he was armed. H. told him then to turn his
beck and inarch ahead of him, which he did until
they arrived at Green’s Station, where Anderson
met them. Here McLaughlin was disarmed. He
a brought to Marietta, and ysstordey morn-
brought to Atlanta and turned over to the
United States Marshal, Smyths, by whom the $300
reward wae paid.
McLaughlin Is now In Jail, and will be apt to re-
ovrin there until his new trial can come off.

amount to $760,000,000! Tbe townships and cities iu
