At 2 o'clock, this morning, tho fire had
spread fearfully. The flames approached
the telegraph office, and the wire com
menced fulling. Twenty blocks have
been destroyed. The wind Is blowing a
gale from the South, slid the flomiug
brands are flying over the oity, threaten
ing destruction everywhere.
The tower of the court house caught
fire from the flying brands. The fire has
retched West StoMpe Stiwt, n mile from
its origin, and is fiow*beyond tho control
of firemen. The immense (timber yards,
with freight depots, have been burned.
The loss already amounts to many mil
lions.

The whole city is threatened. The

The Western Uuion Telegraph Com

ner of State mid Silteeuth streets. Thu
Northwestern Kailroad Company are run
ning trains on both its branches, which
ore crowded with flying citizens. It is

proximately oorroet statement of the

when it is stated thst every bank in the
city except two savings institutions, on
2*2d street, South Division, and one
on Uwidulpb, West Division, ore de
stroyed. All wholesale stores and all re
tail estaldtsbrumts. the Poatoffioe, Court
house, Chamber o( Commerce, and every
hotel in the South Divioion except the
Michigan Avenue Hotel, wluofi, standing
on the extreme southern limit, escaped,
though badly aoorclied; every nowapaper
office; the Tribune building, which wm
supposed to be fire-proof, finally ano-
ovunbed; every theatre, MX of the largest
elevators, the immense depots of the
Michigan Southern anil Illinois Central
Railroads, both the passenger end freight
depots of the latter, more than half a score

faction, when a quarrel ensued, and
