The Pahltc Printing.
In otq; last issue we published the Sen
ate Bill, whiob proposes to give the pub-
lie printing to the lowest bidder. The
measure nr.ets our unqualified approval,
and wo hope the General Assembly will
give it their sanction. The fairness <f the
proposition cannot be denial, aud he who
gives it any opposition, it seems to us,
publicly puts himself against retrench
ment The Bill, os it stands, means busi
ness, and is right in prinoiple. Let the
man who will do the work cheapest, and
who ’can give the bond, have the con
tract. We want retrenchment in the
public expense, aud this is one royal path
way to it Let the bill become a law
speedily.
Elections To-day*
State elections will be held to-day in
New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Vir
ginia, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Illinois
sad Mississippi.
Mr. Page.
The Sheriff of Sumter oounty has
been here bunting for Mr. Page, but
failed to find him. He lias ceased to try
to draw pay sod is trying to hide.
For Governor.
We notice that Oeu. Gordon, Gen.
Colquitt, Gen. Wofford, Judge Worrell
and Dr. N. L. Angler ore recommended
for the office of Govomor at the special
election soon to take plaoe.
Hon. A D. Nnnna'.ly is warmly urged
by many who admire his talents and in
tegrity,
Hon. C. B. Wooten is sh>o spoken of,
and earnestly urged by warm friends.
It is charged round that the friends of
ei-Governor Brown, nto manipulating to
have such s man as they like, chosen to
fill Bullock's unexpired torn), and then
i ave Brown to succeed at the regular
election next fall.
Wicked Humors.
A persistent effort lias been mode for
some time, by s lew wicked conspirators,
to frighten tho Legislature into the adop
tion of such measures as unscrupulous
plunderers desire, by keeping the sir full
of rumors of martial law. The Consti
tution has been entrapped into this snore,
to the extent of giving currency to the ru
mors, publishing the the dispatches, Ac.,
of tho schemers. Last evening, the city
was wild with an exciting report that
Judge Conley (who claims to be Governor)
had received a dispatch that martial law
oror the whole State had been declared,
and Henry G. Cole ap| oiuted military
Governor.
These wild reports arc, no doubt, the
manipulations of Foster Blodgett, Rufus
B. Bullock, and suoli like, and are part
of a scheme of their* to koep tbo State
under tho control uf -ths Radicals, get
Riodgett into a seat in file United States
Senate, sad prevent any investigation
into the conduct of Bullock, Blodgott,
Kimball A Co.
That’s what's tho matter—so it seems
to us. We venture this opinion, any
way. Capt. Blodgett thinks he is cor
tsiu of being admitted to a scat in the
Senate.
CIm« Shirts and Pmlllaf Vftcn.
Yesterday the members of tho Legists
tare appeared iu clouu shirts and smiling
fares—the latter feature encouraging to
to candiilatm, plenty of whom wero on
hand. Our friend Burko was specially
active. As a lobbyist, ho it a snoeesa.
Burke baa bail a ooupla of bitea at the
apple, and finds it an luscious and pala
table that lie wants another big bite.
The truth is, when a man gets in tho
bel.it of pulling at fat things, it is bard
to pal] him off. Hu is, perhaps, the moat

lucrative positions are concerned. He

A Botnar Cowapllaaomt to Dr.
Angler.
To Dr. Angirr the people of Georgia owe
a debt of gratitude. His manly resist
ance to the plundering hordes who ss-
• sailed the Treasury, hia unceasing vigi-
laucu iu guarding it, are nutters of his
tory, and familiar to evsiy intelligent
ciuxen of the State. Ho coaid neither
be intin idol ad, or bribed, or cajoled.—
He thwarted them in their bold, nefarious
ashetnes of robbery, and it is no exog-
gfcation to my that he sated the Sale mil-

New Yoiik, October 30, 1871.
Filters Atlanta Sun : I suppose most
newspaper readers, including all sorts of
politicians, are more or less interested in
the reports abont the New York Bing,
and the legal proceedings against the
members of the so-called “ring.”
To-write n history of the New York
Ring would require more space Ilian a
newapaper could afford. I, therefore,
propose only to furnish your readers with
some of the More prominent points of
Its political and paraonal character.
'Final, the New York Bing is the off
spring of a certain kind of social cor
ruption, which reaulU in fermentation.
The elements producing this corruption,
when operating direetly on the baser and
weaker parts of human nature, are gen
erally attended with similar results in all
egesof civilization. These elements may
bo stated thus: Excessive prosperity, un
seasoned bv “the sweet uses of adversity;"
a reckless disregard for those laws of mor
ality, which form tbo prime uecessity of
aacceaifnl civilization; und a worse then
opium eater’s passion for tho “root of oil
evil.” In such a state of things, iu such
an atmosphere, a
CONNOLLY OB A TWEED
is born and engendered. Such mon as
naturally take to the public crib as rats
to your ooru crib. The cribs should bo
so constructed and so guarded os not to
invite their inroads. But such corn
not been exercised in New
York. Bo far from this, tho present city
charter under which tho ]>eoplo have
been plundered, would aecm to have been
drawn by thieves for tho benefit of
thieves. I’olitioally speaking, I cannot
perceive that ono parly has been worse
than the other in batching commissions
aud schemes of plunder aud robbery.
Certain it is, in tho Legislature, if the
New York lting wanted a aound Repub
lican, they knew where to find him aud
what price to pay for him.
But, at laat, this festcriug sore on tho
body politic, lias bursted, and floods o[
corruption are flowing from ita fatal
surface. Tweed hod loug been flaunt
ing his ill-gotton millions in the faces of
tho miserable people who had permitted
him to rob them. Borne of the gutter
snipes call liim Cnaar, with their usual
contempt for analysis and com
parison. Tweed is, in no way, eveu
a vulgar imitation of Julius Ctesar.—
Ciosar was of a grand and lofty type, dis
tinguish oil in the field and in tho forum;
but Tweed is distinguished mostly for
impudence and greed. Indeed, his im-
K adenoe is rather of a modern type, and
par* tho stamp of a rascally originality.
1 now quote from tbo records, aa pub
lished in tho Tribune, of tho ilDtli inst.:
“On October 1, 1801, Mr. Tweed was
discharged, by Judge Barnard, from liis
deb a and from imprisonment as a bank
rupt" Iu 1868 Tweed commenced pur
chasing real estate in the city. In 1871
Ilia real estate, in value, is published at
80,994,95-1.
In 1HG1, Mr. Tweed was ohoirman of
the "ring” Board of Supervisors—mode
by a Republican Legislature, and com
posed of six Republicans and six Demo
crats, so-called.
This loyal body was in power during
the war on the Boutheru Slates. It was
urn. leationably “ truly loyal,” nud loyal
ty was profitable, so-called. That is to
say, il payed. They ran tho “ big shan-
teo” iu tho City Hall Park, aud all the
other thousand slmntccs in tho city,
whero all sorts of men, from all sorts ot
dens and prisons, nolens rolens, were loy
ally sent to the front for ono tliousaud dol
lars per head—but tho head didn't get
much of the thousand dollars I It is here,
os 1 supposed, Mr. Tweed made his big
•tart, which enabled him to go into the
purchnso of real estate.
Iu 1860 Biobard B. Connolly, at this
time quasi Comptroller, was sued by
Henry D. Foltor for a liquor bill; and
bo then aworo in court that ho utensil
properly at alt. Shortly filter
this be was nominated and
elected Comptroller by Tammany llnll,
aa a matter and a man of practical expe
diency—whioh expediency has since been
practically developed.
In 1808 Connolly commenced the pur
chase of real estate. In 1871 hia real
estate foots up >2,300,091. He is, also,
credited with registered bonds in Wash
ington amounting to $4,000,000. Con
nolly woe born in Cork, and very early in
life earned and owned the soubriquet of
“Slippery Dick."
HALL, RWKENT, AND OTHBBfl,
having taken up so milch of your space
alrcadv, I shall, at present, say nothing
about Mr. llsll and Mr. Sweeny, the oth
er two ostensible heads of tho* so-called
ring. Mr. Swouuy lias boon compara
tively moderate, ns ho is only worth about
million and a half. Hall Lai t e n friv
olous and negligent—no more.
CHABLHS O'CPKOB
boon especially employed ami *p.
pointed to prosecute public peculators
and malefactors. The character of Mr.
O'Oooor s widely known. He Is s man
at once impartial and stern. TmpolU-d
by a high bc.ibo of duty, armed with tbo
terrible baton of l'ubl o Justice, repre
senting the will aud the purpose of the
people, woe, woo to tho guilty, whoever
no may be!
These mon, who have grown so sud
denly rich by such infamous moans, may
suddenly realise the following quaint
poetry from a quaint poet, John G. Baxe:
