A "V *K era nidi Carhop—A Historic
Relic Exhumed.—Th# citizens of Deca
tur, on Wednesday evening last, had an
enthusiastic demonstration over the re
oovery of a long-lost cannon, for more
than forty yean the Common property of
the citizeus of DeKalb, and of intimate
acquaintance with many of tho oldest in
habitants of Northwest Georgia.
This cannon has had an eventful and
romantic career, aud possesses much his
toric interest. Around it cluster some of
tho most thrilling associations of
the younger day* of many old
citizens, when this country was on the
fioatiergof civilization. It has bocuan
active witness t<5 the monster strides of
civilization for forty-one years. It has
been the hero of a thousand occasions.
It has mingled with countless holiday
festivities. Jt has heralded the defeat
of many a candidate for popular suf
frage; its clarion voice has proclaimed the
triumph of many a Whig and Democrat
from the President to a county Sheriff;
aud it has, even, amid the carnage oL
conflict, sent its smoke to miugle with
the incense ascending to propitiate the
God of Battles.
The cannon—of ordinary size—was
transported to this country In 1830, at
the instance of Dr. E. N. Calhoun, at
that time Ospt&iu of tho DeKalb Light
Infantry, a military company organized
for home defense, a necessary precaution
in those perilous times. Tho Indians at
that period were daily committing dep
redations on the whites, and frequently
this Company rallied to tho rescue of
helpless families.
After the Indians had almost ceased
their persecution of the whites, this can
non was used on all occasions of public
ovations, demonstrations or festivities,
and especially was it used by political
parties to signalize the triumph of their
candidates. It has often been the victim
al tho defeated, who, to escape the mor
tification of hearing of hearing its joyous
peal of victory, frequently spiked it, or
clandestinely placed it beyond the reach
of the triumphant party.
About eighteen years ago, wheu tho
Whigs were defeated, they hid it in tho
ground now occupied by Gen. Austell’f
new building, then a den so forest Sub
sequcutly, ou a similar occasion it was
stolen by the Whigs and concealed some*
where in the vicinity of tho pres
ent jail. This Christmas, twenty-one
years ago, during some festivities in the
old city park, Mr. Daniel Poor had his
arm short off accidentally while Bring
and discharging it.
It htB l»een repe«tedly borrowed by the
oitizens of Athens, Covington, Madison,
and Atluuta, to proclaim some civil tri
umph, celebrate some anniversary or
commemorate some departed hero.
On one occasion the Whigs of this sec
tion employed a man to transport it out
of the reach of the Democrats, who had
gained a signal triumph in some political
contest. The Democrats, afterwards,
suspecting some snch movement, bribed
tli© man aud persuaded him to deliver it
to them to herald their victory.
In 1863, Sherman seized it, but in the
memorable battle of the 2‘2d of July, be
tween this place and Decatur, when the
Federals were so signally defeated, it was
recaptured. It ban been lyiug ou the
battle-field ever since, until a few day*
aJS, when somo of the irrepressible peo
plo of Decatur removed it, placed it oc
the court house square, aud on Thursday
night celebrated its recovery with many
a pealing discharge from its time-honored
muzzle.
8uch an enthusiastic demonstration has
not been kuowu in yoars. It was grautod
a grand triumphal procession. Such on
ovation seldom greets a King. The tu
mult was loud, boisterous,‘enthusiastic;
and amid all that clifhuirous multitude,
that veuerable old camion told the story
of 41 years with ono clamorous clarion
peal that sent the echoes of its proud
name for miles around.

TWO CITY GENTLEMEN
engaged in an altercation about some
board (or with somo boards). They gave
a bond of 1100 to appear at tho City
Court.
JANE EYRIE,
the carbonized spirit of [Miss Bronte’s
heroine, fell a pitiless victim to the snares
of Misses Sherwood and McLendon, two
Ethiopian intrigante* of the iw.au month 1
Under pretext of hospitality to the help
less, they seduced a wayfaring woman
and her child into their house only to
baqish them from the roof in the morn
ing. This proceeding aroused the ten
der sympathies of
CARIUE OACKLEK,
who climbed upon tho fence. For this
piece of impudence, Miss Sherwood
called her ft "darned b—h.” Then
Carrie said she would have her arrested
for "callin’ her improfune names,
sinuatin’ that her mother walhod on four
legs.”
Tlioj had a regular metaphysical de
bate at the Court. They were about to
have a fist and skull urgument. Slier
wood said she wonld givo 825 to fight
her. Jonseu interfered, tint His Honor
was disposed to lot them decide the ques
tion in that way. Thou arose a medley,
motley, mongrel multitude of tongues,
and they would have l»een clamoring yet,
bad unt tho magic of 85 each silenced
their shrewish tongues.
JAKE REESE
had the impudence to go D(ucking) C(uts)
iu Q(ungimrea) and P(eddling) L(ime),
or rather stealing mortar, for which he
paid 85.
GAINES THOMAS,
was the Grand Porte(r) of Turkey(>q on
their march from Union county to this
city. He was not equal to the task of
conducting his cohort of Turkeys, with
out a little of Atlanta’s benziue. That
prostrated him immediately, aud he
paid the oeualty of — costs.
Too SiiAur.—Mr. Thomas Sharp,
Thursday morning, while making ar
rangements to give bond for 8100 to ap
pear at tho City Court, in answer to a
charge of Assault and Battery on Mr.
Brazleton, eluded tho vigilance of the
officer and escaped.
A Great Convenience.—Thompson &
lVttibonc, who keep a first class family
grocery ou Whitehall streot, have a pat
ent coffee rooster. It is next to impossi
ble for i»uy one to roost coffee as nicely
ah it is done by this contrivanoe. Theu
you oan get it fresh aud pure and have
no further trouble about it. See their
notice. _
Watch Service at the Kimuall House.
—There will be religions service in the
hall of the Kimball House, commencing
at 101 o’clock to-night aud continuing
uutil 12 o’clock—the opening of the New
Year. Rev. Dr. Wills, President of Ogle-
thorp© University, will proafh on "TU©
voice of th© dying year.” An excellent
choir will be in attendance. The entrance
to the hall will l>c from Railroad Avenue.
Tho watch service in the Loyd street
Methodist Church will l>o omitted, and
th© congregation wilt iftkite in the servi
ces at the hall. The Christian publio is
cordiaMy invited.
Cosusk'n Prospects.—The dispatch
from Washington, of Judge Lochrane’s
interview with the President and his de
termination to let Georgia alone in the
matter of electing and inaugurating a
new Governor, is only an additional con
firmation of what we have all along given
os our decided opinion.
We repeat that, in trying to retain the
office, he will not only mpke himself the
laughing stock of the country, but the
effort will result in defeat and disgrace.
He had better not he prompted by the
Bond Ring.
Carriers’ Address. —To-morrow morn
ing being New Year, in "accordance with
a time-honored custom,” the carriers of
The Sun will call upon their patrons with
their annual address. Although the doc
ument may not be of as much interest to
the public os a President’s message, yet
it is of vastly more interest to the lads
who, in fair weather and foul, hove
trudgeduround faithfully in the discharge
of their duty. They are faithful lads,
and we hope they will find it to be a
Happy Xete Year.
In this connection we would say the
indebted to the Economical Job
Office, V. P. Visson & Co., Proprietors,
for the handsomest address ever gotten
out in Atlanta. They appear to have
token especial pains with it, bringing it
out in three colon, and we think the
readers of The Sun w ill, when they see
it to-morrow, agree that the chief merit
of th© add—aa consists in the elegant
manner in which it is printed. But the
Economical does no work that is not
done artistically.
Christmas in West End.—On Friday
evening, James’ Chapel was the scene of
the crowning holiday festivity of West
End. The young ladies (and some of
them are charmers) of that place erected
a Christmas Tree in the Chapel for the
purpose of obtaining funds to finish and
furnish the church and purchase a bell,
The ceremonies were conducted by R«v.
Mr. Daniel, the Pastor, and Dr. J. Stain
bock Wilson, Superintendent of the Sun
day School.
It was an occasion of unallqyed pleas
ure to the hospitable and refined people
of West End. Prominent amoDg tho
company were the Misses W., Misses M.,
Miss Annie & and Misses B.
There
i huah in the revel and music,
Aud a murmur of wonder from all,
As she glam-cd with a sparkle of starlight.
And swept like a queen through the hall.
Tbo handsome cake oontaining the
ooucesled Hug, was the occasion ol much
merriment. Alter necossary sorcery
aud conjecture hud failed, Mrs. II. J.
Wilson drew the nmol', sought prize.
With a little more whispering and loi
tering, and talking, the children wore
dismissed with full urms, and the ladies
aud gentlemen with full hearts.
The Grand Opera—Fourth and Last
Nioht.—Carl Vou Weber's master ope
ra JJer fYeytkile, was performed last
evening at DeGive'a by a matchless cast
with wonderful effect. The illumina
tions and apparitions used in the in
cautation scene of the Wolf's Den, were
probably the most brilliant and striking
ever introduced on the stage in our city.
This troupe left immediately for Mont
gomery. Thence they go farther West.
Their performances hero havo been en
joyed by our most learned and cultivated
citizens, uud from such they trill always
have a cordial welcome.
