Cglvmbia, January 1.—At the opasnuig of tha Ka~Klux Court, Avery, defeadaut, was fonud abseuU Tlie prpseculiou pro ceeded with /ftitotUiVKt «iid cidied <1/tril lion to AveryY nbsvui-e. Wilson, |of the COUU80I foy the defeuse, spid Avery had gono to York eouuty to visit his family, aDd he understood would return on the next train. Judge Bond demanded to know of MoMsstef, of the defendants connse*, where Avery was. MtMiusfor hoped the Courb would esouso him freon answering the questiou. Judge Bond ordered McMaater to sliow caune why life name should not be stricken from the roll of attorneys. The Court signed an order for the for feiture of Avery’s bail, end iseued a writ fit scire facie*, returnable Wednesday. District Attorney Corbin asked him to consider whether the cas-i should go to the jury in Avery’s absence. The Court adjourned till to morrow. Avery’s bondsmen are J. T. Lowry, of York county—amount 83,000. The general impression is that Avery has absconded—believing his conviction is inevitable. Charleston, January 1.—Emancipa tion Day was generally observed by the colored population—the procession in cluding a troop of the Cavalry Regiment Infantry, and a large number of civil and political societies—all colored—paraded the streets. The oration and speeches were delivered, and salutes tired. The celebration was marked by perfect order throughout. ‘ • Columbia, January 2.—In the United States Court this moruing, the trial of Dr. Avery was coutiuued. After argu ments from the opposing counsel, the jury found a verdict of guilty. No mo tion for a judgment was made. Four prisoners from Spartanburg county pleaded guilty and were remand ed for sentence. KENTUCKY. A Chnrth Buriivd. Louisville, January 2.—The Church of the Messiah, recently erected at a cost of $70,000, has been burned. 4-A-4 OH1U. Oj-gBMlzallun of the Gcntrul A*»eiubly. Columbus, January 2.—The Senate has organized, with ltepublican oiheers elected by the vote of the Lieutenant Governor. The House has organized with Republican officers. The Senate adopted a resolution asking Congress to adopt Sumner’8 one term amendment by a vote of 10 to 15. fr-O-4 NEW YORK. Thu Old Hoard of Aldermen Impeach aad Dissolve—Connolley Out of Jail— Jim Msec Clxallcnscs the World In General and Ned O’HaldwIn i*artlc» ulftr— Kb-KIbx Outrage. New York, January 2.—The old Board of Alderuhiii, alter passing a resolution impeaching Mayor Hull, was dissolved by order of the Court. Mayor Hull quali fied the new Board, which proceeded to business, Mayor Hall presiding. James Mace challenges the woild, giv ing preference to O’Boldain, to fight for $20,000. A fog yesterday suspended the ferries. Connolly’s bail has qualified, aud he is 1 cleaned. A bitter content is progressing at Al bany over the Speakership. The new Board of Aldermen is iu full possession, and the impeachment of Hull, by the old Board, is a nullity. Some of, the members of the old Board oltempted to take possession of the room of the City Hall, but were driven off by the police after a short “ skriminage.” bility on account of indebtedness w hich this city has yet incurred, or is ^prospec tively likely to incur, in very insignifi cant, and with reasonable, honest, effi cient and economical government, such a public opinion and Legislative authori ty, guided by recent experiences, seem certain to compel. There can be no good reason why the interest bearing debt ob ligations of the city should not be re garded as the most desirable of invest ments. * . —« Washington. A New Ruiiliu MlnU«er-A Cabinet Britalon—Grant anil Akrrman Talk RKu-Klax—Debt Statement for Dec*m< Washington, Jauuary 2.—Valerian Scherckoff has assumed charge of the Russian Legation. There was a long Cabinet session to day, after which the President and Aker man had a consultation—it is supposed over Ku-Klux matters. The debt statement for December shows a decrease of over $4,500,000; ooin iu the Treusury, $111,500,000; currency, $15,750,000. ITALY. Kmmnmuel leadi am Embiuador to the Pope. Rome, January 2.—The king sent special embassador to the Vatican,* on New Year’s, with congratulations to the Pope. Antonelli received the embassa dor and informed him that the Pope was indisposed and unable to receive visitors. SPAIN Another Job for the Cabinet-Jf alter*, Madrid, January I.—These is again a Ministerial crisis in consequence ot the appointments of Benor Terris Mara to succeed Senor Crespo, os second in com mand in Cnba, and of Gen. Marais, as successor to the officer in the military direction of the eastern portion of that island. Later—The rumors of a Ministerial crisis arc denied. No confirmation given of the recall of Minister Roberts from Washington; but should it prove true, there is little doubt that Admiral Palo would be his successor. FRANCE. A French Victory. Paris, January 2.—The French have won a brilliant victory in Oran. Two rebel chieftains and one hundred and horsemen were killed. ENGLAND. Tlie case of Allen versus Fisk and Gould has been compromised. Albany, January 2.—-The Republican caucus has nominated Smith for Speaker, which is a Custom House victory. Rochester, January 2.—There is great excitement over an outrage committed a whitc r gfrl by a negro named How ard. This morning a mob of 400 or 500 people went to tlie jail, and attempted to break in and kill tho priiouer, but they were failed by the Sheriff aud the police. The military is now assembling fur the protection of the jail. Rochester, January 2.— Later.—Tho excitement over tho outrage has not abated. There are now immense crowds about tlie jail, and they are frantic over a report that the little girl had died of her injuries. ' The evening pupsw are out with the evidence against Howard. It is conclusive, aud leaves no doubt that lie is the man who committed tho dread ful outrage. The police are at tho jail, and the military are assembling at the arsenal. Attacks are made by roughs, and others, upon unoffending negroes who appear in the streets. It is feared that there will be an outbreak to-night, {file ShanIV and his aids staud firm, uml arc determined to uphold the laws. AAnyOa January 2. -Both Hoo8'*h ive organized, electing the Bopubliain eaueua nominees. lloftunn’s message is long. Alluding t^ the July riots, ho wants the law to se- cure equal rights, whatever the creed. Ho makes no nAlfueon to National affairs. Tweed did not claim his seat to-day. Albany, January 2.—The Governor sent to the Legislature to-day a special message on the fiuanoiul condition of New York city, in which he says, in view of recent events, he addressed a letter to Hun. David A. Wells, requesting him to OVistlgato and report to him on the snb- ject./ Wells reports the net funded debt of tho aity to bo $07,224,716; floating or temporary debt, $94,623,867. The pres ent total liabilities do not exceed 10U,- 000,000. The valuation ot property, Au gust, 1871, was $242,984,490. Tho real catata valuation jol the city for 1871 was retorned at $769,306,110, and yet this docs not represent more than 40 percent, of such property. A true valuation would not be less than $2,000,000,000, on which the present debt, as above estimated, vi#: $100,000,000, would be equivalent to a The Srlitnrk Goei] to Sec Sherman. London, January 3.—The American M nietcrhas gone to France where he will meet General Sherman. PENNSYLVANIA Haiibibbt iio, January 2.—The Legis lature convened to-day. MARYLAND. The Great American Borgia—The Wild Hunt Alter Antimony Continued—'*" Cftciui«(» Disagree—Tangling Ted Annapolis, January 1.—Prof. Gunth stated au impossibility when he said he got tartar emetic when treating sulphide of antimony precipitate with potash. If he had obtained what he sniu he did, it would have proved that no tartar emetic was there. The evidence is incompre- sively technical, but positive in its con tradictions of the results obtained by the prosecution. Dr. Jno. J. Rose, occupy ing the Chair of Medical Jurisprudence and Texicology in the University of Pennsylvania, testified that Aikens’ tes timony does not, to witness’ mind, es tablish the presence of antimony in Kctchmn’s stomach, or in the tumbler. Some very important tests were omitted. Borne tests applied failed. In the tests most relied upon there were sources of fallacy, which rendered them uncertain and unoonclusive. Toney's tests also were insufficient to establish the presence of antimony. Annapolls, January 2.—Dr. Roesc tes tifies that, viewing the case exclusively from the symptoms of post mortem, ns testified to, the witness is of the opinion that Ketchum’s death may be fairly at tributable to natural cause—that is, to a disease. T E L EGR AMS Richmond, January 2. — Governor Walker has vetoed the joint resolution of the Legislature fmapending tho fund ing r>t the funding of the State debt. This, however, will probably amount to nothing, os iu the House the resolution was adopted by over a three-fourths vote, aud in the Senate by a two-tliirds vote. San Francisco, January 1.—Judge Lake pleaded guilty of assault on Mr. Young, of the Chronicle, with a pistol; fined $300. Two reputable young men disappeared from Sacramento. Supposed to have been murdered. Several days Los tern mail arrived to day. A man, his wife aud two children were murdered near Tucson, supposed to have been dauo by outlaws. Tho snow storm in California, Oregon, and Nevada is unabated. Raining in cessantly. Mails, telegraph and travel are interrupted northward. Iudian war in Arizona apprehended. Rome, January 1.—Victor Emanuel was received to-day iu the Quirinal Monroe, La., Jau. 1.—Sixty houses, including the wealthiest portion of tho city, were burned to-day. Among the buildings destroyed are the Union Churches' Mission House aud the Central House. Loss over $600,000. Chicago, Jauuary 1.—Alexis and a hooting party are to meet in Omaha on tho 10th of January. If the snow is too deep for sport, the party is to proceed to San Francisco.
