one of general internet, and involve!
mattan of ezicnaive utility, it aeetne
to he altogether pertinent and proper
to gin the origin of theee “ weather
reporta.”
We etote, then, for the information
of aB who an otftione to know, that
they originated with the writer of
thia artidt, end the following ii a
co treat kiatory of their incipient be
ginning. In the winter ol 18M-52,
the writer Of this waa n member of
Congreex, and chanced to take lodg
in go at MraDimcan’o, on D street,
near the comer of Q and Fifth, where
for the flrat time he met tho late
“Profeeaor Bapy, H ao-caUed, who>a«
perbape more generally known, at
that time, a* the “ Storm King” He
wu e boarder at tEentna hoaue. Mr.
Eapy waa the asthof of a Ww aya-
teta of Meteorology, announcing what
he mgstolssi to ba the true mum of
rain, and the natural laws governing
AU'itoatUndant^henoinena, atorma,
hnrrioanea, tornadoes, etc. Hia
system waa in direct conflict
with the naually accepted theo
rise on the subject, especially
those of Bead and Bedfleld. In the
United States, hia Views were not re
garded with favor by the acknowl
edged ecientista generally. Prof.
Henry, of the Smithsonian Iistitute,
waa an eminent exception.
Mr. Ihpt' had, however, visited
Faria, and had submitted ideas upon
that snbjsot to Arego, Tandy, and
other distinguished philosophers of
Franoe, who thought better of them.
It is not our purpose now to enter
into er revive the discussions on this
subject at that day, bat simply
to staff that the acquaintance thus
formed between the writer and Mr.
Espy soon ripened into friendship
and intimacy. Meteorology was the
absorbing topic with him. The
writer ol tbfo hating a fottd&ess for
stodfesof thte kind, warn took up the
“Storm King - th«-<rv, anA after be
coming thoroughly acquainted with
its principles, became folly satisfied
that it waa, in the mam, nnqueationa-
bly correct.
Feeling aaaured not only af the
true philosophy of Ms. JSspy’s view*,
but of the great practical usefulness
of the meteorological laws taught by
him, under a proper system of speedy
communication between distant
points, he suggested to Mr. Espy the
importauoa of daily “telegraphic
weather reports,” who fully con
curred in taia, but how waa the ex.
pense to .be mat? That wasapus-
tling question. The writer suggest
ed and proponed to him to inquire
and ascertain if the telegraphic com
panies would not send to Washing
ton daily short weather reports from
the distant Cities say New Orleans,
St Loom, Chicago, etc., as news
items, without charge—while he
himself, the Writer, would in person
see Mr. SeiVto, of the National In
telligencer, and endeavor to get him
to publish them as general news with
out charge. Both parties so solicited
readily complied—and this is the
origin of theaa “telegraph weather
reporta.”
At first they wese exceedingly
meagre—each u “New Orleans—
Bain—wind, S.W.” “Chicago—clear
—cold—wind, N. W.”
Other papers in Washington, as
well as other cities, soon gave like
publication to such reports.
It was"from this germ the present
grand system in this oountry sprung.
It is now under the control ofQov-.
eminent officers, and being fonnJed
upon the strictest scientific princi
ples, with a sufficient number
of stations and aocuiacy in the re
ports from them, the daily announce
ment from headquarters ought not.
to be locked to as “probabilf tow,” but
with as much osrtainty as an eclipae
of the sun or oooultation of a star.
To the genius of Espy, She modest'
as well as eccentric Pennsylvania
“school-master,” belongs all tbeQon-
or of dilcovering ti ose laws of nature
upon which this system of “weather
reports” rests, and from which, if
rightly conducted and carried to per
fection, new and incalculable benefits
may result to mankind.

In order to draw our little discus
sion with our neighbor, the Constitu
tion, to a close, we propose, briefly, to
rjply to its article of yesterday mornj-
In expressing our opini ofr'thut the
tnirgMS of tho Democracy are true to
tiA'ir principles, ws did uot intend to
admit that they were not deceived by
“trustcdJeadcrs” iq the late Presicfcn-
tial campaign, by whom they were
first deceived and then dragged into
the support of a movement they did
not ifldone, but- accepted or acqni-
esoed in on tt» ground of chooaiog
betewni evils, os they regarded the
oonteet between the Two wings ef the
Republican party. We repeat what,
we have repeatedly repeated, that the
JMmocracy who thus aoquieaced did
not vote for Mr. Greeley on the score
of principle. They laid principle on
the shelf for the nonce to avert what
they conceived to be the greatest of
two impending political calamities.
The results of that campaign, both
at to the Presidential and Congres
sional elections, proved the Greeley
movements most stupendous blander
which the most ardent of its support
ers are now willing to admit. If the
loss of the Presidential race by over
six hundred thonsand popular major
ity, and the losses in the Congress of
the United States, does not constituti
a blunder, then we do not know what
our neighbor would conceive u blun
der, except it be the adoption of a
policy resulting in the complete an
nihilation of a party. Any policy
adopted by a political organization
calculated to divide its adherents, is
always a blunder, The Baltimore
Convention found three millions of
Democrats in solid phalanx which
would not nor could uot have been
broken by the adoption of a Demo
cratic platform and the nomination
of a true Democrat upon it. Was it
not a blunder when the action of that
Convention adopted a policy that
drove two Democrats away for every
Republican it gained ?
Without condemning any Demo
crat for doing what he thought wus
best under the circumstances at the
time, we only desire to point onr po
litical friends to the record of the
past triumphs on principle and the
defeat following the “departure” from
that reoord. We are opposed to re
peating the blunder, or committing
another equally as iatal, or in the re
motest degree approaching to it
That is just what we mean in appeal
ing for unity and harmony on aound
In onr pabliebed interview with Mr.

sented bim as Saying that no Public

a ctiuatnugen of the law regnlatiog tbe

did Mr. Miller injustice in this, as he
distinctly stated that he had not era

strict probity than J. 1 Miller, and no

tar We do not admire that style
of journalist which underrates every
bsdy else and over-estimates its own
ability. The frequent allusion to
Tec Sun as tbe “ little paper with a
high tone,” by a city peper, more
than bloated with a disgusting self-
importance, does not disturb our
equanimity in tbe least. The ani
mus of said paper is apparent to ail
but itself. Self-esteem is u good
quality, but self-adulation is simply
disgusting to people of good taste and
refinement.
