The hospitalities onjoyed here are
worthy of mention. The reception night
before leet, et the residence of Hon. W.
H. Barnes, in this oity, iu honor of bin
son’* marriage, was one long to be re
membered by those win. se presence were
solicited ou the occasion. Mr. Barnes
and bis most estimable lady arc
noted fw and wide amongst their
numerous friends for their hospitality;
md on this oocasion the guests had eveiy
cause to thank them for an evening of
genuine pleasure, Mr. Bwues invited
his professional brethren of the bar in a
body, looal as well os visiting lawyers.
Ool. G. A. Miller, formerly of the Comm
ons Sun, was present, and did ample
justice to the rich viauds end profuse
delioaoies spread Defore the assembled
guests. At a late Lour the assemblage
retired, highly delighted with themselves
and their amiable boet and hostess.
Opelika ii a wonderful town. Every
body seems Io be iu a wonder as to what
will happen next. It is filled with won
derful people, who do all sorts of won
derful things. There is Beu
Cooper, for instanoe, of the Opelika
House, wbo is a wonder to ail who are
acquainted with him. The immeuse
amount of good humor that lurks witliiu
bis obese corpus is wonderful. 1 lie had is
the Kimball House of Opelika, aud Beu
is the ohief engineer. If he ever gets
mod nobody knows it. Borne say when
be gets his book np it makes him feel bo
badly that be goes off and oriea it on*,
and no one is the wiser for it. Beu is a
wonder, and knows how to keep np e
good hotel.
The latest sensation ot yesterday, in
the absenoe of a killing, wo* the com
pletion of the prismatio railway. It ia
* railway with only one track. That's a
wonderful thing. I took a rido on it
snJ p'oeounoe it a suooess. It is de-
vated in some plioea twenty feet
above the grounds acoording
L the depression or elevation of
aurfaae. The projectors and com
pany have e patent for the invention,
end it is bound to bring ache ige in rail
road transportation. It is yet in its in
fancy, but enough haa been demon
strated to prove ooncluatvely that the
mechanical principles oontroliug its con
struction. ora natural and practical It
ia attrooting considerable attention, and
I was informed by a member of the stook
company that they had refused 85U0.00U
for a half interest in the invention anti
patent.
Another wonderful thing I suw. A
truok-raiser on one ol toe railroads has
invented and patented a ear coupling ur-
raugemeut, which ia bound to
work a revolution in tnat linn of
basineas. I examined the model
myaelf, and am folly satisfied that it will
take the place of all other car couplings.
It is simple and plain, and explains itself
at a glanoe. The inventor has a fortune
in his grasp, and I woald not be surprised
if the law required railroad companies to
use this invention on their trains. It
will save time, tronbie and tbe lire of
cahtichhvillk.

Editors Sun Gartersvillo is essentially
a “live town ;” it is very rarely that it is
in a state of “quieeceuoe." Wo huve bad
tha fortune to be tbrowu there in tbe
course of our travels frequently of late,
and always something iu the way of
amusomeut or exoitemeut turns up. The
business men have a knack of doing busi

some very gradually, it is true; but then
it is lietter to be making money grad

this unanimity of opinion ie another
wonder, for which Opelika ia ao prolific.

While there on yesterday wo witnessed
a melancholy incident. A nice looking
follow had, it seems, procured a fiery
steed from our enterprising friendsMeeeru.
Roberts A Tuuiliu, and had mounted
for a rido around town, but from his ex
traordinary elevation, or lrom somootbir
cause, ho became, evidently, dizzy, end
being seized with an inclination to uis-
mouut very suddenly, he came dowu
quicker than he went up; or, rather, he
aocomplishei tho wonderful feat of
tumbling down aud "going np,” in "one
time and one motion,” and when ha
arose there was a considerable quantity
of Cartersville dust adhering to hie broad
cloth. We rather suspect thut the young
man’s downfall was caused hy the quan
tity or quality {1) ot the "double-bap
relied dead shot,” (as Moore would say,)
whioh “them Cartersville chaps” had die
pensed with bo liberal u hand, "for a con
sideration you know.”
The longest day has to come to an end,
sad so did yesterday: and wo would fain
wish that every day could have eo pleas
ant au ending for visitors. After mnk
ing a vigorous attack upon the Barton

cigar and strutted over to tbo Court

timed end happily received address, af
fording a rich fund for entertainment,
no lees tor his practical common sense
idea* than for the wit and eutire de
veloped in hie s'y but pungent thrusts at
common foibles and the prevailing follies
of the day.
Miss V. and Prof. F., after the address
was over, favored us wit.i u favorite gal
op. aud one of those delightful reveries
thut makes one forget for the time being
all sublunary things and imagine him
self an inhabitant of the spheres above.
Then followed tbo cantata proper, anil
wo feel tbat wo cannot do justice in our
limited space to this portion of the per
formance. It was full of oharmtug solos,
sparkling oborul simgs, and bawitohiug
scenic efieols ot liviug beauty. There
were seme twenty five or thiity misses
and young ladies, cnoh representing *
flower, save oue, who filled the character
of u ricluse, aud we do think,
that we would, with Cowper, ugh,
" Oil for $ lodge la Homo v«$t witd«riiM$i,
Home boundirM contiguity of $b$do,"
if we oouid bat huve such a recluae for
a compatriot).
Wo regret that could uot learn the
u urn oh ot the various yoaug ImlutH who
NUfttained the priiicij el par.n in tbe cun
lata. Wo luaruud, however, onlv the
oamea of the Mteaea llarab, Morruon,
Peacock and Verdor/. We cauuot clone
thin letter without puyiDg a tribute to the
mauter mind of MIhh Verd-ry, thu teacher,
whonw training and onltarc wan ao ad

ance.
Carteruville certainly heart the palm
for beauty. We never «aw a moroHpark-
ling array iu Hnch au unweiuhly, aud c on*
Mp'caoua among bright eyee und lovely
forma were thoao of the Mu^eti 8. Our
good friend. Geo. Young, will pardon ua
the use of Lim name, but no woe particu
larly f*vorcd, and wo heard more than
one yoong mm wiiti that tht General

Bur the longcet letter must lu ve an end
and ao uuiHt thin. Au fo-oir,
