OH, THAT MALIGNITY:
Tb* Harrisburg (P*,) Stale Journal Law
one quality of besrt that prepouiterate*
Above nil others, and that in, ot maliguity
or hatred. The very thought of a “ iebel”
throws it into a bilious exhibition of
temper that is as unmanly aa disgraceful.
Referring to a atatement that Mrs. R. E.
Lee ia of the opinion that she can nefer
recover Arlington Heights, and doe* not
expect to do so, .»ut that she thinks that
she ought to have $250,000 for it, the
Jounud lets off its bile after this style
It looks wry much to mo aa if there is Utile
lobby” organised on Ibis subject, and that Mrs. Lee,
if aho aoooMda, will bo expected to divide. Ar
llngion to the forfeited property of a dead traitor,
confiscated aa tko petieltv cf bia crime. If the
wUoira of all traitors eipeot to bo remunerated for
tbs pnnlabment of tbelr husbands, tbo people who
serreii tbo government will bo called upon to pay
s jnae heavy bills.
Huch sentence. may sound well to the
ears of those of . mendacious, revenge
ful spirit They are the promptings of
s cowardly spirit, thstonly strikes in the
dark or when its riotim is helpless. Gen.
Lee s traitor f No ! As the immortal
Washington fought the battles ot Amer
ioan independence npon the encases of
whieh was erected the government ot the
free and the breve, so did Gen. Lee fight
to preserve the rights of a tree people
to govern themselves—a right whieh had
been perverted through the hatred and
bitterness of sectionalism and party
strife.
The Stole Journal is, pel haps, bat a re
flex of a oertain element at the North
that would forever keep np strife between
the Motions for the sake of partisan suc
cess; bnt they may apit oat their poison
ous venom as they w'll, and like the
Journal does, bnt the time is rapidly
coming when the great Ameri wn heart
will respond all over this oonntry to the
sentiments of fraternal brotherhood, and
the people of eaoh section will be sward
ed equal honesty in the part they took in
the lata war.
The paper or the man who would do
anght to prevent a consummation so de
voutly wished for by all good citizens, is
not worthy of bearing the form ol mon.
Huch would rob the grave ol its dead for
meroenery purposes, and defile their own
homes for temporary politiomi supremacy.
Let the .State Journal, and those it rep
resents, continue to apit fire end brim
stone upon the heads of “ traitors” us
they will, and the time will eome when
tbelr mendacity will reooil upon them-
solves with terrible tone and fury.
HARROW al'AOK RAILROADS
The Kenete Olty (Mo.) 7fm« says that
Memphis Tennessee, proposes to have
e narrow guage railroad convention at an
early day. Among the schemes to be
considered, and one for whioh Memphis
has constantly worked, le the narrow
gnege to ran to Kansas City, and now
known aa the Kansas City and Memphis
Railroad. Ia disenasing the question
the Appeal says: "They (the several nar-
row gauge propositions enumerated by
this journal) need not coat more then
912,000 per mile. To devise ways and
means, it is proposed that a convention,
constituted of those interested in these
several schemes, be held in this oity at an
early day. If the people oan contribute
lend end money and lubor"enoogb to
grade and oroas-tie the roads, mortgage
may do the rest; end an interest held by
a oity or oounty in one road may be used
as a baaia of oredit in constructing
another, and stock in these two wifi build
a third. These arc matters that deserve
disouaslon and the definition of practical
plana and uniform systems. All these
roads should have one central depot, and
••oh will enrioh the rest. When should

Noah Bwayne, Associate Justice of the
Hupreme Court; Judge David K. Carter,
of Ohio; JudgeFieneponh Justioe Mill

Judge Benjamin R. Oort is, of Masaa

Black, Charlee Snmner, Judge Doe, ol
New Hampshire, and Lyman Trumbull,
of Illinois.
This office, like all others in these offloe-
icrambling days, la one to be oontanded

It is stated that the farmers of the va
rious counties iu Iowa have beld conven
tions, resolving to nominate candidates
of their own for all county offices, and
to bold a State Convention to nominate
e candidate for Governor. Among other
resolutions adopted by the farmers of
Wayne county, in that State, Were the
following:
Pint—Thai we hereby renounce *11 former party
boutla, and will act aa rree.ueu, knowing oar right*
and policy
of the KapuMloau and Democratic parti ei,’so-called,

Notwithstanding that it has been re
peatedly asserted that the Palrons of
Husbandry have no political objects or
purposes in view, we do not see bow the
uew secret organizstion Is to be non-
political it the above resolutions are any
iudicatiou ol their objects aud purposes.
Organized for the advancement of the
agriculturalist interest of the country,
aDd for their own benefit, the Patrons
of Husbandry ■ certainly have all they
can do to oousummaie the object and
purposes of that organization.
If they have determined to take into
hand the management end control of Abe
offices of the country, we do not see how
they are to separate their actions irom
politics—for these constitute the very es
sence of polilica. In saying this mneb
we candidly eonfesa that we know bnt
very little of the real objects and pur
poses of the Patrons ol Husbandry. *
Our own hnmble opinion is that it is best
that the uew order should abstain from
politics, and devote its energies to thos
interests for which it is ostensibly or
ganized lo promote.
OxivmsiTX Kzcokd.—We acknowledge
the reception ol several numbers of this
neat weekly college paper, published at
the University of the Houtb, Snwanee,
Tenn. The Record shows the steady
growtn and progress of the University.
The matriculants lor 1873 number fifty-
three, and the whole number of students
exceed two-handred. We recognize
among the matriculants many familiar
names, suob os Kershaw, DeSaussnre,
Alston, McGowan, Bimkins, Leabrook
and Rhett, from Boutli Carolina. Texas,
Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Geor
gia and Mississippi are also well repre
sented.
The Record shows that Mr. Hugh Craig,
of Cambridge, England, has been added
to the list ol professors, as Profess >r of
the Latin Language, and that Mr. Thos.
Williamson, of Virginia, has been as
signed to dnty as Assistant Professor ol
Latin and Master of the Grammar SohooL
These acquisitions must add greatly to
the popularity and sneoess of the Univer-
sity. __________
The Neuro.—The American oitizen ol
Afrioan descent is a peculiar creature. If
there is anything he heartily dislikes it
ia restraint or labor—especially daring
the hot eammer months, when he is cer
tainly the strongest. Judge Weems, of
Uibb County Court, had before him on
Monday last some ten or a dozen ne
groes, charged with being vagrants. Most
ol these plead guilty to the accusation,
and were permitted to select between
twelve months in jail and being bound ont
for twelvo months. Borne of them ac
tually selected twelve months in jail in
preference to the same amount of service
where they will be well fed and clothed.
There is a good deal of the Afrioan in-
•tinct exhibited in the Belertion thus
made. The cool retreat o( a dungeon
these hot summer days is far more
pleasant to many negroes than honest
labor; but, then, "the oolore.l troops
fought nobly,” end must needs enjoy
their freedom in their own way.
The President's Indian Policy —
John O, Farrell, Esq., w.itiog from Furt-
neuf Canyon, Oregon, states that the
Boise Indians, in speaking of ikeir neigh
bors, the Modoos, says that their hearts
are siok to see whet is goiug on at the
agenoy. The other day one of the chiefs
asked whet made Washington (President
Grant) hire men to go there to eteel what
belonged to the Indiana They say that
Washington (President Grant) is ea bed
as the bad Indians, to send among them
bad men that ean steal and tell lies This
is their own talk, and it ia a poor way to
improve the habits ot the Indians when
they are themselves making remarks
about the agents ot the government.
Statu. or Fhanelin.—The statue, by
Hiram Powers, presented to the oity ol
New Orleans by Cuarles A. Weed, Eeq.,
and recently erected on LaFayette
Square, in (runt of the City Hall, will be
unveiled and dedicated this evening at
6:90 o'olock, when E. E. Formalee, Esq.,
will relate the origin of the Franklin As
sociation. Judge W. W. Howe will then
deliver the oration upon the life, char-
aoter and virtue of the great statesman,
patriot and philosopher, Benjamin Frank
lin, when the ceremonies will be oon-
e ex-Km press may do,
however ambitions she mey be in behalf
of the Prince Imperial, the will act cau
tiously and eiraamspeotly.
A correspondent of the World, who
evidently believes that elannlinem co
next to godliness, says: " Could we have
chan Stream and decent tenement houses
a terrible blow would bn struck it the
moral filth end politiml end financial
corruption which make New York a by
word and a reproach among the gnat
citios of the world.”
SUM
Puhlic safety depends entirely upon
the execution of all laws provided for the
"proteetion of life, liberty and prop
erly.” Unless the laws are promptly and
sternly executed, there can be no safety
for either, and tbe laws rnn T as well be
blotted from the statute honks. And,
yet, in the lace uf thiee truths, rimes
are attempted to be exiei.uated aud tol
erated in every conceivable manner.
Morderers, thieves and highway men are
tou often tbe subject uf misdirected sym
pathy, and are frequently turned loose to
prey npon the public through the inter
cession of this false sympathy.
The firm execution of tbe laws of the
oonDtry la the only mode ire ean see of
suppressing crime, and it is worse than
folly to enact taws when they are not to
be carried ont. W“ see npon every hand,
and in every quarter, the recklessness
with whioh life is taken, and tbe too fre
quent escapes from punishment of crimi
nals. All sorts of pleas are set op in ex
tenuation ol the most foal crimes. 'Jhie
is not right. The law always ooght to be
executed under , roper sod just convic
tions, snd in this way the increasing
spirit of crime may be suppresi ed, and
'law and order” restored.
It is well to see in our own State a
firm determination on the part of the
courts and those who have the enforce
ment of tho laws, to see that tbe Uws
shall be expiated. In no other way may
we hope to deter evil doers in their out
lawry.
