Fatal Affair In K«tg«fleld, 8. C.
From u gentleman of Edgefield Court
House, South Carolinu, we learn that a
difficulty occurred in iliut village yester
day, which resulted in the killing of Mr.
William Gomillnn and the probably fatal
wounding of hia father, Mr. Lovett Go-
milloo, by Mr. Arthur A. Glover. The
particulars of the afiair, as we obtained
them from our informant, are as follows:
It u| pears that ubout twenty-eight years
ago a Mr. Joseph Glover was killed by
Lovett Gomillon. A coldness had since
that time existed betwten the two fami
lies. About tour weeks ago Lovett Go-
miitou struck Glover in the face with his
i a jocular manner. Glover
rest-oted this aud ordered Go-
Million not to do it again.
William Gomillon, son of Lovett, hear-
of tne affair, made some threats in
renue to Glover, which reached the
latter’s ears. Yesterday morning, about
ten o’clock, all of the parties ben g iu
Edgefield, Glover sent word to the
Gomillous to meet him at the drug st >re
of Mr. A. A. Cliaby. Youug Gomillon
reached the store tit at. Glover was iu
the store, and wheu Gomilljn entered lie
fired at him with a small derringer. The
ball struck Gomillon in the Bead, aud he
fed ueud.
In a few moments Lovett Gomillon,
who had beeu inquiring for his son,
reached the store, and seeing William
Gomillion lying dead upou the floor, he
gruppled with Glover, who thereupon
fired upon Ul with a secoud doinugo..
Thu ball struck Gomillion in the head,
aud he tell latally wouuded. At the time
our in ormant left the village the old
map was not expected to li v e five min
utes. The Gomillious lived about eight
miles from the village, on the railroad,
this side of Johnson’s. Glover, alter the
shooting, gave himself up to tne author
ities.— Chronicle and Set, tinet, 18/A inst.
The late Capt. Hall wrote as follows to
the editor of tho National (Jazett?, before
embarking in the Polans: “ I shall bring
you tidiugs which will astonish the
world, aud recompense my friends for ail
their labors in my behalf, or 1 will die iu
the attempt. I will u».ver retur.i to the
Arctio regions again if I am successful;
but, if i am not, and live to see the
Uuited States, I shall tell my story, and
then seek a home in the far north, where,
in peace, I shall pase away to a blighter

Increasing Number of Fatalities from
tbe Disease Yesterday—Over Fifty
Deaths from all Causes
Reported.
From tho Naalivilie Bsuuer of Wednealay, Joue t 18.
There was a good deal of dismay ex
pressed yesterday over the report, which
was only too true, that the cholera had
spread more rapidly, and that there was
a greater mortality than upon any pre
vious day. A good many who have here
tofore been standing ou the order of
their going, packed up jesterday for a
trip to the country. It Is expected that
th re will be a large exodus of people
out of the city to-day.
All those having children now pacing
through their second summer are leav
ing on tbeir account. Mauy physicians
have udvised this com sc from the fact
that the summer oomplaiut, usual to chil
dren of that age, is likely to run into
regular diarrbcci and perhaps cholera.
Many hesitute to go to the country,
however, for fear they may take the dis
ease without any hope of obtaining a
physic an so quickly as in Nashville.
Tms fact has oo several occasions been
somewhat alarmingly illustrated. The
diseaso does cot exist iu Nashville alone,
but iu the couutry around it, and iu some
of the towns within a radius of thirty
miles.
Au old physician asserts that but few
children under the age of two years lived
through the oholeru epidemic of I860.
There is no question about the spread
of the disease into ulmoet every purl of
the city 1’be fact was painfully devel
oped yesterday. It was thought that it
hud beeu abating iu South Nasbville, but
it seems to have still remained in that por
tion of the city. An unusual number
of new cases were reported from
tuat part of the city yesterday. It has
also made its appearance in Fairfield,
with prospects of increasing iu that lo
cality. It has also visited Rolling Mill
Hill, which is almost altogether covered
over with small negro shanties. From the
manner iu which tbe occupants live, all
ouddled up together, it is feared that it
aiuy there become a plague, with no
Fmall results. It was much worse yes
terday ulong tho Western depression,
uud uloug the Lick Brunch bottom, and
on Crawford snd Criddlo streets especi
ally. There are, perhups, more oases ou
tbuse two short thoroughfares than upou
any five of the longest stree ts. On them
live some of the poorest us well as tho
most degraded people of which a oity
could well buust.
Here, from two to sir persons occupy
the Same small, uuoopifortuhie aud cheer
less room, illy furnished, and very un-
oleau. These are the abodes in which
disease uud death have full sway. The
itury department. wereeuguge(fV e ®l« r -
day iu disinfecting these two streets, and
the thoroughfares uud low pluces in their
immediate vicinity.
Fifty barrels of *ar were to havo been
burned over the city lust night, had it
not been for the rain. It would be a very
and prudent course to pursue, were
this done nightly. It ought, iu fact, to
be done all the time while the pestilence
remains amongst us. It must be fougtn
in the most stubborn and relentless mau-
ner. We were slow enough, all know, to
appreciate our danger at a lime when
much could have beeu accomplished to
ward preventing its spread. Dilljd ally
ing with this formidable dise#s<. is any
thing but encournging.
Tile Crop#, etc.

Editor8 Sun: I supposo au item from
this locality iu regard to cr<*p prospects,
will not oe uninteresting to your many
readers.
Wo arc now, after a dry April and May,
having an unusual amount of raiu. The
rains have beeu so frequent and heavy
for the las: ten or twelve days that bnt
little time has been left for work, and as
u nuturil consequence, weeds and grass
liking rapid | rugless, though the
farm is ure using much industry and
skill in uiiuiiigiug liu-ir crops.
Exii u labor is in demand but little cru
be had. Good stands of corn and cotton
are on uplands; if the rains continue long
it will be u complete failure on bottom
lands.
Corn aud coitou uro looking well ou
uplands, and wi'li favotahle weather to
euabie tho farmers to work thtin out, a
fair yield may bo realized. The wheat
crop will be short. The oat crop is very
good, the best that has been for several
years past. The potato ciopis looking
fine. Iu fact, everything on uplands look
well. A Subkcbjubh.
