way B. Lamar, agent of Albert G. Browne
and others, an action for the conversion
of 1,800 bales cotton, valued at $500,-
000, which plaintiff claimed that defend
ants took from him in Georgia in 1865,
and which has been ou trial in the United
States Court for u w ek past, closed yes
terday. Judge Cbipley, alter the evi
dence was. closed, ruled that as the evi
dence was uueou rudictml that the cot
ton was turned over by the military to
defendants, who claim< d that they were
appointed special agents of the Treasury
to take charge of c ptured and aban
doned property iu the seceding States,
no action could be maintained by the
plaintiff, ana directed a verdict for de
fendant*, subject to revision by the Su
preme Court ed tho United States.
Baltimore, June 20.—Tin total loss
to the Mount Vernon cotton mill is oyer
_ quarter of a million. The building
was of stouo one hundred and thirty-four
feet long, forty-three feel and five stories

completely destroyed. The first story
contained looms; second, card room;
third, spinuiug room; fourth, looms;

Messrs. Editors : Our rising little
town is quiet, jet we feel that we ure
gaining sufli -ient importance in the com
mercial world to make it tuko an interest
in what is going on. Just after the sur
render, Hogansville contained but three
or tour houses; now we have a popula
tion of about five hundred’, thirteen busi
ness houses, consisting of urooery
bouses, three; d y goods, two;one furni
ture and tinware; one drug store, aud
one liquor store—the rest keep mixed
stocks of dry goods and groceries
steam gt .st aud planing mill.
There is no hotter country in the State
of Georgia than that in a circuit of ten
miles of Hogansville, while I oan safely
say, certainly no better people. We havo
fiue water aud good health, and the best
babies in the world.
Hardly a month passes that a new
house d'>C8 not go up within the oorpo
ration limits. Mr. Lofton has torn away
the old hotel, and is now building on the
site. He proposes to put up one that
will be an ornament to our town and
con u try.
The Commencement exercises of the
Mule and Female College, now under
churge of Prof. Williams, comes off ou
tue 1st of July. Tho sermon will be
preached l y the Rev. Mr. Quigg, of Cov
ington, on Sunday, the 29ib. The Con

of the daughters of Georgia.
