Wcw-York, January, to. The General Afferftbly of
CennrdicHt finilhed their fofiion atJdjrtford, on
ult. The confirmed revolt of the sounty of Vermont hud
been recommended as a principal object of their delibera
tions, but Col. Ethan Alien and Mr. Seth Warner, prlrt
cipal aflors in the late prudent deefiofi of that t< tofy in
‘favour of our old conltitutlon, having a confidcrable intc
reft in this body, the members in general,.far from going
into a formal investigation of the matter, freely declared
an approbation of their measures; and thus it was entirety
dropped, much to the chagrin of all the inflammatory spi
rits in the eastern provinces.
I.aft Sunday arrived in town about r German and q
ther troops from Rutland, chiefly Rrunfwickcrs; they
had long been prifonerj, and were ill treated, but are now
happily relieved by an cachange in a ‘flag from New Lon
don. .

March 1. We are well informed, that on the ipth
ult. the rebel partisan Sumpter made his long projected
attack on the poll of Congajrees, near which he lingered
till the 2id, making many ineffYhral attempts, in all
which he was difg race fully beat off, and pnee by a fmull
party of foqueftered Negroes.
He next proceeded to Thomson’s, and endeavoured to
gain that post, not aiming at any thing P great as the
block-house, but here he met with the fame, or
worse fate, being repulsed with confidcrable loss, and o
bliged precipitately to retire. - __l.,.
Thus foiled in all his views, on the 24th he crofled the
Santee, where hi* reception is not like to be much better,
having already loft all his own baggage, and the waggons
he had taken in his prugrefs, had mmy oflm men mide
prisoners, and being, whitn.fhe accounts came away, nearly
surrounded by parties of the King’s troops, which had
njoved for that purpose.
March 3. We are happy to conclude our accounts of
Sumpter’* expedition with informing the pu’.’ltk, that on
the 27th ult. he was so unlucky as to fall in with Col.
Watson and of Provincial light infantry, by
whom he wis entirely defeated, and his party obliged to
disperse, leaving behind him 18 killed, fome'prifoiicn, and
many of their hotfes) so that only misfortunes seem to
have attended the progrefsof this Enterprizer.
Wc have credible information for alluring the publick,
■*hat on the 13th of lad month Lord Cornwallis with his
army wa* advanced within 1 5 miles of the Roanoak, and

which have been received his Lordfoip fo near the
enemy as his advanced guard to have frequent Ikirmi/hes

It wa* currently believed In the country that a detachment
of the Kdng t troop* had poTeffed themfclves of the north
Bde of that river, which would infallibly cut off from Mr.
Creen a retreat in that quarter.
We further learn that a part of the rebel baggage fell into
Lord Cornwallis’s hands soon after his palling the Yadkin,
ond that the remainder w.ts only preserved to them by the
baanefs of the weather. ? ■ *
The fame accounts assure ns, that the drfertion from
the rebel ansy surpasses what has been experienced in ary
former period of this war, and that Lord Cornwallis has
been joined by many Lmalifts from Haw River, who
