On “his occasion Licuten
jnt Colonel Stuart and Capt.
Goodrich of . Jt-hc-Guards,
Lieutenant O’Hara of the
pvoyal Artillery, Lieutenant
Robinson of the 2 3d, Ensign
Talbot of the 33d, and En
sign Grant of the 7 1 ft, were
killed, and Capt; Schutz of
the Guards mortally wound
ed, but no other officer dan
gerouily.
Thus far we are fandtion
ed by the dispatches, which
being wrote on the field con
u
tain not so many particulars
as we may look for in those
shortly expelled; but the
reports which accompany
these mention Gen. Greene’s
being wounded, and the e
nemy having 101 l a coo men
Brigadier General O’Hara,
Colonel Webster, and Lieu
’ tenant Colonel T arleton,
were fiightly wounded.
In consequence of so fig -
nal a fucccfs, numbers of
the Continentals, as well as
Militia, are daily joining the
King’s Forces, and claiming
their protc&ion.
March 31. Yefteriay arrived his MaWty’s frigate
Charlestown, Capt Evans, from Chefapcak Buy.
The French Admiral, with all hib (hips and 2>>oo troops
onboard, stole out of Rhode Ilhud the qth instant, and
directed his course for Virginia. On the 16th the Fren< h
fleet Eroug.’iyto, obaut-i 5 leagues to the x>fit ward qt Cap-
Henry, to wait the return of a frigate sent to reconnoitre
the Chefajaesk. The Kreneh Adminl had ntfc
wav so iiily as to elude the vigilance of Ad:nii ai Arbuthrmt.
Our fleet was prevented failing by unfavourable winds and
weather till the 12th. At daylight on the 16th the Iris
made the signal for the enemy. The weather was very
hazy, and the wind fteffi, from 6 in tnc morning till 1
in the afternoon, the French Admit-pd kept aloof, man
euvnfiglfe.'.timiraway, when he wore and formed his line
to leeward ofy&obtt. Cap':. Cos%, mti.e moft gallant
and officer-like manner, L-J i:ito n<ftion at 2 ‘o'clock ; the
un and center were soon after engaged, and about 3 the
French line was broken, when the French Admiral made
t,.e agna! to weur, and about 4 o’clock, in very thick,
squally weather, the whole of his fleet made fail to the
$. E. with all they could carry.
, The Rabuftc, Prudent, and- Europe, were so disabled
in their rigging th it tliey could n >t make fail after the
enemy $ fl.et. Admiral Arbutlinot arrived in Lynhaven
Bay the next evening.
It is Faid that a French Aip struck to the Robufte, and
tnothcr to the Prudent. Certain it is they chafed firing,
and had no colours flying when they wore.
Thedafnare sustained by the Ficnc.fi/hips, by every ob
lervation that could be made, wag gery ccuvfidefable • and
the carnage, from the numbers on board, must hive been
very great. It is matter of doubt if they will be able to
make any port on the cpnuinent.
-T l h immediate confequr nC es of this affion are of the
Jnor t important nature. The plan of operations of the
French and Rebels u entucly deranged, and the iumftion
t i e x r 0 L ° 1 ? r ’ ,cnch troo F s to the Rebel army in Virginia
is effectually prevented. . ®

te v ere and important thanthat at Camden Auguftifith. Lord
Cornwallis feeing no probability of coming up with the
enemy, began to think of the danger of advancing so far,
and exposing the great number of polls behind him.too
much, which weakened his army confidcrably ; he thcre
fiiie retreated for two days, and finding the enemy (who
“> had been joined hy 2000 new troops front Virginia, 18
rndnths men) hair at Guildford Courthouse, when he was
2.0 miles further, made a forced and circultods march in
the night of thc 14th, and at day-break attacked the rear
ot the enemy, at a time when they were thinking of pur
fning him to ohc gates of Charleftown. The coufftft was
gffiat and bl >ody for an hour, when it terminated glori
oUfly, and the vanquished were pursued 22 miles. On
this noble occasion many brave men loft their lives. The
officer who brought thc dispatches, and was in the battle,
gives many particulars. This affair happened on an open
an! fpacinus plain 56 miles iouth-wefc of HilUborough.
The Legion behaved remarkably well. The Guards were
the greatefc fuffcreis, as they fired but once, and then
d/fhed upon the-enemy, Lord Cotmvallis had two horses
shot under him. Col. Tarlcton a few days before had
routed a large body of killed 90, *n.l dispersed
and taken the others. It is said Arnold has had an adlion
in Virginia with a frefh army from Congrefi, when the
enemy were defe ted, but w(; have ho particulars. North
Carolina is now in peace ; all men there have submitted.
“We have been here tpaafportei bevoml almofr any
conception with joy. All the forts, fhipping, and lines,
were yefterdey manned, and fired a grand feu dc joye. Tie
ringing of bells was great, and the illuminations lase night
were pretty general. Many lh u t thcmCelves up in dark
nefa, were and ftiil are in the utmost agonies of mind,
distress, and dcfpair.'’
