PHILADELPHIA, January a.
Our lad contained an account of the late terrible conflagra*
tion at Richmond. The following is another account of that
truly unfortunate event, taken from the Virginia Gazette of
the iothinftant:
“ At four o’clock on Monday morning last the inhabitants
of this city were alarmed by a fire, tVhich broke oiit at an
uninhabited house near Mr. Andjerfon’s tavern. The wind
being up, and the house old and dry, this turbulent element
quickly spread its flames around, communicating to houses
in three directions, which threw all into confufion, and
would have baffled the most expett firemen ; a line was for
med for the purpose of conveying; water to the engine, but
through the unsteadiness of many the line was often broke and
thrown into confufion, and; to add to the mifconduft, an
engine was quitted in the middle of the street, which was
nearly destroyed. By aClive exertions Byrd’s tobacco ware
house was many times extinguished ; but at last the number
of fiery coa s which fell put an end to every attempt, being
burnt with about 200 hogsheads of tobacco, and 160 were
laved. When the warehouse was burning the fire was at its
height, and the scene truly melancholy, raging with uncon
troled fury ; after three hours violence; and deftroyinga
square of the principal houses and stores, it abated, leaving
a dreadful vestige of its dire effefts, and several worthy cha
racters in opulence and ease nearly deprived of their all. -
Alas, how uncertain are earthly pofleflions—this young city,
about rearing its head in point of trade, &c. receives a check
from that Unconquerable element. From a rough eftimatc the
lufs exceeds ioo,oool.”
NORFOLK, December %6»
On Sunday evening last a drayman of the name of Jennings,
an/1 his wife, were inhumanly murdered by one Cadet
a foreigner, who has resided here for a ftiort time, and follow
ed the profe.'fion of a tailor. It appears that the unfortunate
perfous Vrho fell a facrifice having a difference with this ruffian,
lie drew a knife, an stabbed them in so fhoking a manner that
they expired almost instantly. He was immediately secured
and committed to goal.
ALEXAN DRIA, * January 11.
fey a gentleman from Annapolis we learn, “ That matters
are in great confufion there—the Lower House are violent in
favotr of paper money, and the Senate as determi ied against
it. A motion was made on Friday last by one of the leading
Members for an adjournment, after the business before them
was dispatched, until March, in order to collect the fenti*
ments of the poeple refpefting the utility of a paper curency,
which was carried by a majority of the House, one of whom
declaied, that, if the Senate fliould after that continue to op
pose the wiihes of the community, he would move to compel
them by arms to acquiesce, qr have thfe Courts of Justice ihut.’
RICHMOND, November 22 .
Extract of a letter from a gentleman of diJtinSiion in New
l'or/t, to his friend in this city, dated Nov, 11, 1786.
“ The East is in tumult—The dreadful appeal is too pro
bable. Preparations are making by the insurgents with afli
duity. Measures were aifo taken by government with de
cilion and firmnefs. It is suggested that Vermont and British
America fofler the madr.efs of the mal-contents, by theic
counsels and promiles. Whether we shall conquer this ef
fort, or whether it will conquer us, depends on the pecuniary
aid of the tranquil states. It is certain if Massachusetts yields,
that the vigors will extend their conquests, and very deftruff
ive consequences will pervade from their victory the whole
empire. A mob government for a time, which will ter*
initiate in defpotilm among ourselves, or from abroad.

A late Martinico paper contains the following paragraph!
“ When the American Ambalfadors obtained an audience
of the Dey of Algiers he addrefled them in these words r YOl
Americans are a hew people : you are too poor to make thepre*
fonts which I want, and too far off for me to be afraid of you.”
Jan. On Tnefday last the Honourable House of Repre

they proceeded to the election of their Officers, viz.
