A gentleman boarder, who left Ihe hotel Saturday
evening to visit Augusta, on his return yeaterday dis
covered his bureau had been opened and three £Old
watches stolen, besides a suit of clothes and other ar
ticles of clothing. The watches are quite valuable ;
the first a heavy gold watch, old style, with a figured
face and with a heavy gold chain attached; the second
an old family watch- Tobias maker-with a white face,
quite heavy, and made about the beginning of the cen-
turv; the tilird a double case lady's gold watch, me
dium size. The owner, unfortunately, baa no record
of tlieir numbers. We are authorized to atatethata
suitable reward will be paid for the recovery of the
property. The suit of clothes wos a light cassimere
one, and new.
We understand that “Hutchy,” one of the thieves,
was arrested yeaterday morning at Station No. l .v,' on
the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, by Mr. Charlton, the
conductor of the train, who had got a description of
them. They were both together, aud had walked from
this city to the station, in order to avoid arrest. After
the train had left the station the conductor attempted
to arrest them, when Maass, the Frenchman, jumped
from the moving train aud made hia escape. The
other one %vas secured and brought back to the city
last evening aud lodged in the barracks. On exami
nation, one of the watches was found on his person,
and he says his companion had the money aud the
balance of the watches. He states that tlieir intention
was to have made Thomasville, though the probabilities
that the other thief will keep as far as possible from
the railroad; but the officers being now upon his track
he can hardly escape.

Mr. O. F. Webster, the agent of the National Express

gestion of the lungs. Mr. Webster was a native of
New Hampshire, but a resident oi the South, where
he had been engaged in business tor several years
prior to the war. He had been afflicted with con.
sumption for several years, but managed to attend
to his business daily up to within a few hours of his

A Card.
Savannah, Ga., Lily 16, 1866.
To the Editor oi the Daily /Itrahl:
In your issue of this day I perceive the announce-
en that John J. Hamilton was held under bonds for
trial before the next term of the .Superior Court. In
justice to myself, I respectfully request you to publish
the following statement of facts in the matter referred
On Friday evening, 1 th instant, between eight
aud nine o'clock, two young colored girls came into
my place of business calling for two “sherry cob
blers,” to be taken out of the house, tendering in pay
ment a greenback of the denomination of two dollars;
I delivered the liquor and gave her change which I
supposed to be correct. Before she returned the
empty classes I examined my money in tho till and
found it short two dollars, and concluded I must have
en her more money in change than she was entitled
Upon her return, I accompanied her to the house
for the purpose of correcting my error; arriving at the
house I explained to the woman who sent for the
liquor that I had called to correct a mistake of two
dollars made in Change. She took a sum of money
which she said was the amount her girl had brought
from me. I requested her to « ount it in my presence,
which she at once commenced to do, first counting
the fractional currency; then came a one dollar green
back, under which was another one of the denomina
tion of two dollars; the latter she closed her hand
upon, saying that the former, with the fractional cur
rency, was all she had received from me. I took the
bill from her and identified it as the missing money,
feeling fully justified in so doing, as I was confident
that it was my property.
The above is a full and correct statement of the
affair, which I wish laid before Ihe public, to correct
any feeling which may be caused by the publication of
my name in connection with this so called robbery
Respectfully,
.John I. Hamilton.

use ol the pumps, the vessel, we learn, was freed of
about three feet of water. It is thought that she will
be entirely relieved in a few days.

Not only In this country, bnt in all other lands to
which commerce bears our Hag, the peculiar merits
of the article are known and appreciated. It has
been found suited to all climates, all localities, and
the needs of every class of society. Compounded of
the purest vegetable ingredients, unalloyed with any
mineral salt or corrosive vegetable alkaloid, and com
bining the properties of a WEOLESOMB STO
MACHIC, a GENTLE LAXATIVE, and an efficient
ANTI-B1LIOU3 AGENT, it is endorsed by practical
Chemiata as the safest, and by unprejudiced physi
cians as tbe surest Preventative, Regulatiug aud
Restorative Preparation of the age.
The nature of lts components la the guarantee ol
its harmlessness. It consists of the stimulating prin
ciple of sound Eye, medicated with the finest tonic,
anti febrile, aperient, antiscorbutic, aud anti-spas
ntodlc herbs, roots and barks that botanical research
lias yet developed for the use of man. Every vegeta
ble substance that enters into Its composition Is
culled and selected with scrupulous care, and no
thing lhat is not Bound and perfect or Its kind is used
In its manufacture.
In the lactory at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a sys
tem of inspection far more thorough than that
adopted by Government authority, as a test of the
quality of tbe great ataples of life, is rigorously prac
tised. Every barrel of tbe cereal stimulant which
forma the basis of the Bitters 1s ascertained to be ab
solutely pure before it Is received into the manufac
turing department, and every lear and fibre of tbe
medicating ingredients scrutinized before tho process
of Infusion commences. Such is the enormons ca
pacity of the tanks In which the Bitters are prepared
that the proprietors are enabled to keep a large stock
on hand, and to supply the domestic and foreign
market with an article matured and mellowed by
time. Hence the fiery and biting flavor which at
taches to ordinary bitters, and which is due to their
newness aud the Interior quality of the drugs and
alcohol of which they are concocted, is never per
ceived in this mild and agreeable preparation. Ac
cording to the testimony of able chemists, the es
sence of good Ryo is the most healthful of all spirits,

STOMACH BITTERS
Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World ot which
that fluid to tho stimulating Ingredient.
To Dyspeptic Smfferers.
Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed
all the varieties of Indigestion. Its symptoms are
so various, and differ so much in different individuals
that lt Is almost Impossible to classify them. In fact,
some of them are utterly Indescribable. It may be
safely asserted, however, that half tbe diseases of
manklud spring from a disordered condition of the
9tomach; and that the other half, whatever their
origin, react upon that MnaiUve and Important or
gan. Among the ordinary indications of Dyspepsia
are flatulence, a bloated and full feeling about the
stomach and abdomen Immediately after eating, a
gnawing sensation or a sense of hollowness at tbe
pit or the stomach between meals, a heavy dull feel
ing In the head, feeble or nnsteedy appetite, occa
sional nausea, restlessness during night and a weary,
nnrefreshed feeling on rising in the morning, palpita
tion of the heart, depression of mind, sometimes
amounting to monomania, Iosh of memory, confu
sion of thought, sour stomach, with raising of food
and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of
eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and dlsincll
nation for exertion, and sometimes emaciation and a
corpse-Uke pallor. These are a tew of the direct
signs of Dyspepsia, but as lt is generally complicated
with specific affections or the bowels, the 11.er and
the i erves, its victims have many additional torments
which are technically attributed to other causes.
The best advice that can be given to any one who
has tha slightest predisposition to Djspapsia, Is to lor
tify Ills or her digestive organs by the dsily nse of
Hostetter’s Bitters.
The disease proceeds from a lack of vigor in the
stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone
and renovate that organ. If the gastric apparatus Is
in good working order, and can perfectly disaolve
and thoroughly assimilate the food submitted to its
operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If it cannot
do this, it rcqnlres reinforcement, and the beat of all
reinforcing agents should be forthwith resorted to.
The stomach is the commissariat of tbe system
supplies the elements of life to the whole body. In
It Is prepared tbe material of blood, muscle, bone
end fibre, and If lt fells to purvey that material in
quantity, and of apreper kind, the whole body suf
fers, and with It the mental faculties. Therefore pro
tect the commissariat department. Don’t let the en
emy obtain possession of it. It is easier to prevent
disease from getting Into an organ than to expel lt
after it becomes a chronic fixture. Consider the
first Indication of uneasiness In the stomach as a
sign that Dyspepsia Is preparing to attack, and baffle
tt at once with the GREAT RKPBLL VNT.
Bnt If It Is too late to prevent, remember that it is
Dot too late to cure. It Is believed that there ia no
case of Chronic Indigestion that can withstand tbe
remedial operation of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
This belief Is grounded ou twelve yeaia’ experience
of the efficacy of th# preparation. The first Instance
of its failure to give reltor Is yet unchionlcled. If lt
ever had failed, the voluminous correspondence ad
dressed to the proprietors from all parts of the United
States and South America, would at leaat include
one letter expressing dissatisfaction. Bat no, there
is not ONR. The testimony, extending over a period
of more than a dozen years, Is all of the approving
tenor. Certainly this is a sufficient warrant for
claiming t'tat the BITTERS ere a SPECIFIC FOR
INDIGESTION IN ALL ITS,VARIETIES.
Hostetter’s Bitters
AS A
Ucmsehold Medicine.
It la a great fallacy to auppose that the nauaeoua-
neaa of a medicine la any proof or Ita value aa e res
torative The truth le, that if the palate revolt*
against a remedy, it cannot do much good.
HOSTETTER’S BITTERS
Are not unpleasant to the uste, and always soothe
and quiet, instead of irritating the stomach. Indeed
they are the best known preventative ol aud cure tor
nausea. Their usefulness as a family specific can
scarcely be overrated. For sickness at the stomach,
sudden spasms, wind colic, hysterica, nervous Head
ache, lassitude, low spirits, and the thousand and
one little ailments that are continually occurring In
every family, there is nothing comparable to thorn. A
whole medicine chest full of tinctures, essences, pow
ders, and pills, Is not worth a single bottle of the
BITTERS in such cases.
